What Does Ellsberg Say?

Ellsberg says that the government has ordered the media not to cover 9/11:

Ellsberg seemed hardly surprised that today’s American mainstream broadcast media has so far failed to take [former FBI translator and 9/11 whistleblower Sibel] Edmonds up on her offer, despite the blockbuster nature of her allegations [which Ellsberg calls "far more explosive than the Pentagon Papers"].As Edmonds has also alluded, Ellsberg pointed to the New York Times, who “sat on the NSA spying story for over a year” when they “could have put it out before the 2004 election, which might have changed the outcome.”

“There will be phone calls going out to the media saying ‘don’t even think of touching it, you will be prosecuted for violating national security,’” he told us.

“I am confident that there is conversation inside the Government as to ‘How do we deal with Sibel?’” contends Ellsberg. “The first line of defense is to ensure that she doesn’t get into the media. I think any outlet that thought of using her materials would go to to the government and they would be told ‘don’t touch this . . . .’”

He supports a new 9/11 investigation.

He says that the case of a certain 9/11 whistleblower is “far more explosive than the Pentagon Papers”. (Here’s some of what that whistleblower says.) He also said that the government is ordering the media to cover up her allegations about 9/11.
And he says that some of the claims concerning government involvement in 9/11 are credible, that “very serious questions have been raised about what they [U.S. government officials] knew beforehand and how much involvement there might have been”, that engineering 9/11 would not be humanly or psychologically beyond the scope of those in office, and that there’s enough evidence to justify a new, “hard-hitting” investigation into 9/11 with subpoenas and testimony taken under oath (see this and this).

Alternative Media Is Not Much Better

It is not just the corporate media.

I have had the owners of highly-regarded alternative media companies confide in me privately that they don’t believe the government’s version of 9/11, but that are scared of discussing it publicly because they don’t want to be tarred-and-feathered for discussing “conspiracy theories”.

Even writers like Glenn Greenwald – who are good on so many issues – won’t touch it.

Of course – as Ellsberg points out – “Secrets … can be kept reliably … for decades … even though they are known to thousands of insiders”. Indeed, the whole label “conspiracy theory” is just an attempt to diffuse criticism of the powerful.

People used to understand this. As the quintessential American writer Mark Twain said in a more rational age:

A conspiracy is nothing but a secret agreement of a number of men for the pursuance of policies which they dare not admit in public.

Of course, as thousands of top American military officers, counter-terrorism officials, intelligence officers, congressmen, structural engineers, and others have publicly said, the government’s story about 9/11 makes absolutely no sense. See this, this, this and this. And family members of people who died on 9/11 – and many New Yorkers – want a new investigation.

But you’ll never hear that in the corporate media.

This week several members of Congress challenged Obama on the legality of the Libya war, given that actions have exceeded the 90 day period during which The White House doesn’t need Congressional authority for military action under the War Powers Act.

The White House response: We don’t need Congressional approval because this is not technically a hostile action (because we don’t have ground troops in Libya).

Tonight the NYT has a major bombshell: Two top lawyers — Jeh C. Johnson, the Pentagon general counsel, and Caroline D. Krass, acting head of the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel — told The White House otherwise.

Even Attorney General Eric Holder sided with Krass.

But Rather than heed their advice, he instead went with two lawyers with views more favorable to him: Bob Bauer (who is internal at The White House), and State Department advisor Harold Koh...

Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) said that congressional approval would be needed to authorize continued U.S. military intervention in Libya.

“The War Powers Act should be enforced,” Franken told Talking Points Memo after giving a speech at Netroots Nation in his home state of Minnesota. “We’re going to have to vote.”

Friday, it was reported that President Barack Obama had overruled two of his senior lawyers, who said that he would need congressional approval under the War Powers Act to take action in Libya.

Last week, a bipartisan group of House members filed a lawsuit against Obama for what they saw as a violation of the act...

NBC Sports has been forced to apologize following an outcry after the network deliberately edited out the words “under God,” from the US pledge of allegiance in a video segment for the US Open that showed images of US troops, but the edit has nothing to do with NBC’s purported “liberal bias” and everything to do with the fact that NBC is owned by the US military-industrial complex.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,” states the United States Flag Code for the Pledge of Allegiance, but in an NBC promo for the US Open golf tournament, the “under God” part was cut from a recording of schoolchildren reading out the words.

Given the fact that the reading of the pledge was interspersed with images of US troops in a brazen attempt to link patriotism with the kind of hegemonic conquests in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya that have bankrupted America, killed thousands of troops and disgraced the United States’ reputation globally, it’s made pretty clear in the clip that “God” has nothing to do with this brand of so-called patriotism.

Charges that the edit was due to NBC’s “liberal bias” are nothing but a smokescreen. Watching the clip, it becomes clear that the producers intended to replace obedience to God with obedience to the US military-industrial complex, which by no coincidence also bankrolls the NBC network.

NBC Universal is run by General Electric, the world’s second largest corporation and one of the major players within the military-industrial complex.

GE is a major supplier of arms and the “war on terrorism” has seen GE’s government and military contracts rise substantially to over $2.2 billion. So the de facto replacement of worship God with worship of US troops has nothing to do with “liberal bias,” and everything to do with advancing the cult of worshipping the empire that many Americans have been brainwashed into mistaking for patriotism...

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the headline is satirical. Though Rick Perry is feigning reluctance to announce his candidacy, we have known for a long time and announced for more than a year that he will be running for higher office. Our inside sources have made clear that Perry’s supposed pledge not to run is nothing more than a calculated fraud. Rather than reconsidering, he’s always intended to run when the time is right. His own actions make this clear anyway. As the video clearly demonstrates, that’s why we’ve decided to announce for him, so that when he does announce, a reminder of his deceit will rank at the top of Google searches, etc. What else can you expect from Al Gore’s former campaign manager but carefully-crafted lies?...

Unemployment at 22.4% is causing a run on assets of retirement funds. That is probably why legislation is being introduced to limit how much money can be removed from these investment vehicles. About 11% of participants have taken out loans over the past year, up from 9% y-o-y. In overall total 22% have loans out and the numbers are accelerating. Almost all the loans will never be paid back. Hardship is forcing people to withdraw, as well as those who believe that government will try to commander 401K’s and IRA’s to fund a bankrupt government, that wants to replace those vehicles with bogus government guaranteed annuities.

If the extension of the short-term debt is not legislated by August 2nd, we may see legislation regarding a takeover of some retirement plans.

As this possible misuse of Americans hangs in the balance, inflation plods, relentlessly onward and at the current rate of acceleration we could see hyperinflation two to three years down the road. Ron Paul won the Republican Leadership Conference straw poll by a landslide in New Orleans Saturday.

In a big win for the Congressman from Texas, he nearly doubled the tally of the second place candidate — Jon Hunstman, the former Governor of Utah.

The top four vote getters were: Rep. Ron Paul (612 votes), 
Jon Huntsman (382 votes), 
Rep. Michele Bachmann (191 votes), and 
Herman Cain (104 votes).

None of the other candidates (Romney, Palin, Gingrich, Pawlenty, Santorum, Johnson, Roemer) garnered above 100 votes.

As for the poll itself, delegates at the convention were asked, “If the primary election for president were held today, for whom would you vote?”

The candidates on the ballot, listed alphabetically, were: Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, New Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Gary Johnson, Thaddeus McCotter, Sarah Palin, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Buddy Roemer, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum...

...The difference between Gingrich and Ron Paul is of course the fact that Ron Paul has held a steadfast position for over thirty years and has a voting record to match. Gingrich, on the other hand, loves to flip flop around, literally from week to week.

It is especially strange to see Gingrich shifting towards a Tea Party like position, given that just a few months ago he was referring to it as a “militant wing of the Republican Party”...

According to a little noticed quote in the Washington Post earlier this month which has attracted virtually no media attention, President Obama told gun control advocate Sarah Brady that his administration is working “under the radar” to sneak attack the second amendment rights of American citizens.


During a March 30 meeting between Jim and Sarah Brady and White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, at which Obama “dropped in,” the president reportedly told Brady, “I just want you to know that we are working on it (gun control)….We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar.”...

...Gadahn’s call arrives as the Obama administration prepares to launch a concerted effort against gun ownership and the Second Amendment.

In April, Obama discussed his administration’s intentions concerning gun control with Jim and Sarah Brady, founders of the anti-gun group the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. “I just want you to know that we are working on it (gun control). Obama’s being hassled because he’s dropping bombs and bullets on Libyan targets without Congressional permission, a clear violation of the War Powers Resolution per some Republicans and Democrats. Some estimates say that a year of it will cost $160 B. Obama says it’s within his powers because, though he can’t declare war, this isn’t war; it’s a “kinetic military action,” whatever that means.

He goes on to say that ground troops aren’t exchanging fire, which adds to the non-warishness. But Libyans bombed or rocketed to death from the sky are still dead. It’s not clear that the dead Libyans would appreciate the neat distinction. The Libyans themselves are pretty clearly having a civil war; Obama is killing more of the folks on one side than he is those on the other, though he hasn’t discriminated entirely. Apparently, it can be hard to tell which side he’s shooting at from the air. That they are having a war seems to be clear to the Libyans even if it isn’t clear to Obama.

Many would say that blowing up and killing via your military is making war and that’s the end of it. However, sending the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines against North Koreans plus 2 million Chinese troops wasn’t a war; it was a “police action.” And all those folks killed, wounded, and tortured by the North Vietnamese weren’t war heroes since they weren’t in a war, either. Obviously, this whole thing can be confusing...
