Re: Boyd K. Packer
Has anyone got the Cliff Notes version of the talk?
Nothing of any big consequence. Something about Adam-Ondi-Ahman and keys transferring and new temple construction and some type of gathering thing happening before next conference as I recall. Some ol' same ol'.

Re: Boyd K. Packer
Any chance that a transcription might be available? For those of us out here 10 miles past the middle of nowhere, watching videos over the internet is pretty much useless. I think my internet company gave me the equipment that Fred Flintstone turned in when he upgraded to a new system.

Re: Boyd K. Packer
The talk is on the 18th, it hasn't happened yet. I'm told no (official) transcription will be available, at least for some time.
I love these G.A. BYU devotionals, it's amazing what the G.A.'s will say to these young kids they won't say to the general church membership. But Elder Cook broke that tradition last conference.
My wife Jo was very good at taking shorthand, one of her favorite GA's for ease of shorthand was Elder Packer. She could type almost as fast as they speak.
But she's gone, so that leaves me with recording it on my hard drive and on my Phillips HDD recorder. Problem is, I'll be in attendance, I love hearing this man speak! However, he may not release his talk to transcription. Several GA's have done that through the years. Twice I have had to record two great Elder Maxwell talks from other sources, usually friends at KBYU, and have Jo transcribe them for me.
I have in the past used my Dragon Naturally Speaking voice to transcription program, then Jo made the corrections as she listened.----
-- I have not been able to figure out why my fingers will not move as fast as hers did----
Dang, I miss my wife-----

This will be during education week (currently going on at BYU) so there will be a bigger than usual audience. It will be very interesting to hear what he has to say. Thanks for the "heads up."

Re: Boyd K. Packer
Bob,
Sorry to get off-thread, but how did your wife pass away? I'm looking at the possiblity of my wife with liver cancer, and a very short life span. Don't know yet, still more tests and a biopsy. But my question to you is how did you survive? I feel like I'm being turned inside out!
Back to topic. Does anyone have an idea of what he topic is?

Re: Boyd K. Packer
I think the last BYU devotional i was at was Margaret Thatcher. Are there any outside listening options?
If its streamed live over the radio/internet then that's easy to record obviously.

Re: Boyd K. Packer
the sound was messed up for me, which made it hard to take good notes. He did talk a lot about how we are in a war with satan and that we need to protect ourselves and our family spiritually.

Re: Boyd K. Packer
i did watch it online, though i don't know a thing about recording or mp3's or any of that, sorry! i did take some notes, but i was also chasing after a 15 month old, so it's not like complete or anything but here are the snippets i caught
--prophets teachings are not always "comfortable" (as in to hear, like, the truth hurts)
--told a story about a snake getting into a nest that seemed really safe and eating the fledglings, or something like that.
--our homes are very vulnerable too, and we need to protect our nestlings and to do that we must first acknowledge that Satan exists and is real and his purposes, etc.
--then there was a part from the book of Paul that I mostly missed, dang, cuz it sounded good! the last part was a scripture about being "ever watchful"
--then he threw out the secret combinations in the last days/our modern days combining against us now and not letting them get above us
--we are at war with the adversary
--then he went into a pretty detailed bit that was basically about the preisthood chain of authority, talking a lot about the changes that have been made in the past in the organization of the seventies.
--(this is interesting) he talked about how tolerance is a virtue but like all virtues can be taken too far and be transformed into a vice. then he talked about being too tolerant of lax morals and sexual impurity, etc.
--he went into detail also on the history of Family Home Evening and how it is inspired doctrine and necessary to protect our nestlings
--Our homes are most vulnerable and the power of the priesthood is necessary to protect
--he also made many sympathetic and appreciative mentions of single mothers and his understanding of the plight they are in and also his appreciation for the work they do and the strength they have. he talked about the priesthood power they have access too, though i didn't catch all the details on that one!
--then your basic list of the little things we must do daily to increase our safety and security for ourselves and our children with obedience to the covenants. these are the things that strengthen our priesthood and the protections we have around our family.
anyway, like i said these are just the bits and pieces i caught, and thanks again bob for letting us know! it was a great talk and a great reminder of some things for me.
as a side note, i worry a little about dear Elder Packer. He seemed really to be faltering a lot and almost slurring his speech and whatnot. did anyone else notice that? it really reminded me of the way Elder Wirthlin had been in his last couple of years. Sad.

yeah, i don't always take notes on things, but i find that when i do, i remember it so much better! even if i never read the notes again
it must be the action of writing that helps solidify it in our minds.

Re: Boyd K. Packer
I also watched it online and then later on the DVR. What a powerful and bold message! Here are my obervations:
-The story of the snake in the nest was interesting at first but when he followed it up with scripture in II Nephi "Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!" followed by Moroni's warning on secret combinations, I was floored. What a potent analogy! Here we have a "nest" protected from all outside intruders but a "snake" gets inside and does the damage. This dovetails nicely with President Packers recent counsel at the Freedom Awards Gala
"We know that war can't destroy it, but if it is destroyed it will be from within. And now we face a danger greater than any of the wars we have faced."
-He also gave powerful counsel on protecting our homes and families from the world.
-He spoke boldly regarding the power of the adversary (that he has real, tangible powers!) and that the ONLY power to overcome that force is the Priesthood. He also reminded us of Joseph Smith's words in that he who has a body has power over those that do not.
-He spoke on the powers that are seeking to change the laws of the land (inferring marriage laws). This is key. Remember in the Book of Mormon that it is the changing of the Laws of Mosiah that the nation became ripe for destruction.
Very bold discourse! Several times throughout the talk he made it a point to repeat himself. When a prophet repeats himself, we should listen.

Re: Boyd K. Packer
It seems that once again President Packer has issued a warning about the secret combinations. January 2007 BYU devotional, the 2009 Provo Freedom Festival, and now this. In a way, it seems strange that President Packeer would speak of that again somewhat openly at BYU, and yet it not be mentioned (at least that I could pick up on) in Genral Conference. But as I think on it, this might be the best way to get the message out without jerking the tail of the beast, as would be the case if he said the same thing in a General Conference. The subject of secret combinations has been a relatively dormant one for quite some time, and its apparent revival causes me to wonder if there is more I can do toward opposing the SC as I perceive it. I have nno audio capability just now, so I hope the full text will come available soon.

Re: Boyd K. Packer
I really appreciated his specific mention of single mothers. In the last year or so I have really started hoping that preisthood bretheren would start treating women without the blessings of the preisthood in their homes as "spiritual widows". It's a difficult situation.
I can't wait to watch it again.
