"What can be done?" Patience and long suffering is what comes to my mind at the moment. I have put a good amount of time, resources and effort into trying to awaken people, expecially LDSs, to the admonitions of prophets and apostles that we study and espouse what we call "constitutional principles". And BTW, MasterOfNone, I've come cross LDSs and others in the UK and in Europe who do prefer these principles, even though most know nothing about the US Constitution. I guess it's like missionary work. You can give the message, but the Spirit does the actual converting.

I chatted briefly the other evening with an LDS who hopes to run for Congress in an adjacent district. In a presentation he gave that evening it was clear that although he opposes FedGov welfare, he believes it's OK for the states to support or help out citizens in need. To me, the principle is the same, be it FedGov or a state or a county or a municipality.

It seems that the message of Faith, Hope and Charity is typically the last warning message before the destruction of a wicked civilization. Just go back and read the Book of Mormon and you'll see the same pattern - Pride cycle - from obedience and living righteously to complacency, laziness, pride, immorality then the prophets giving strong warnings until the people are at the point of no return - ending with teachings of faith, hope and charity, then destruction. (see Ether, warnings of Secret Combinations then chap 12 on Faith, Hope, Charity. Also, Moroni 8.)
