19th Century LDS: Enemies of Education, Despisers of Learning, Haters of Books and Schools

Why were early Latter Day Saints thought of as “enemies of education, despisers of learning, haters of books and schools, and of everything, in fact, that is pure, ennobling and refined.” The following BYU studies article traces the transition from haters of books to a people who embraced knowledge by study and by faith. But what was it in the early church which branded members as enemies of education? Was it because outsiders believed only the uneducated would believe the story of the restoration espoused by Joseph Smith? Is it because factual evidence contrary to the restoration was rejected by early members? Here's the summary of the BYU article followed by a link:

Orson F. Whitney began his 1888 “Home Literature” speech by pointing to the Church’s biggest public-relations problem of the time, which was that most people in the world saw them as “enemies of education, despisers of learning, haters of books and schools, and of everything, in fact, that is pure, ennobling and refined.” His speech, an assignment from the Apostles, began that situation’s reversal, and the emphasis on learning “by study and also by faith” has continued in the Church to this day. This article explores that history through the MIA reading curriculum.

It was an effective ploy by the Adversary- his forces called them “enemies of education, despisers of learning, haters of books and schools, and of everything, in fact, that is pure, ennobling and refined” and the church has gone out of its way to disprove that by embracing "education" and trying to be accepted as "mainstream", which has led to the philosophies of men slowly seeping into the church and its doctrines.

You make an interesting point about higher education being the seedbed for Babylonian--esque morality and worldly pursuits etc.

Is this like the Nazi book burnings? Which began at Magnus Hirschfeld's Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, which had a library that included around 20,000 unique works on intersexuality, homosexuality, and transgender topics.

One should read the christian women missionaries accounts that went into Utah in the victorian era to minister amongst the mormons.

Yes, we are certainly making up for it now.

“‘Brigham Young, his interest in education.’ Upon this question I will not prolong remarks. With Brigham Young from 1832 until his death in 1877 I was often closely associated, and I know him to have been a pioneer, a promoter, and a true friend to education, and although he was not himself cultured in scholarship or refined by classic education, yet he by nature was highly cultured and refined both in habit, demeanor and conversation, and no one could associated with him and not be impressed by his refining influence. And so far as the influence of music and drama tend to civilize and elevate, or refine society, credit should be due to Brigham Young as the pioneer chief in their promotion and establishment in the heart of the ‘Great American Desert,’ to give musical tone and inspiration to all its divisions into states.
But we should not forget that Brigham Young was the leader of a people, driven before the cannon and bayonet, of a heartless and cruel mob, who fled across the Mississippi in winter, leaving their homes without opportunity to provide food or clothing; and plundered of all they could not carry, and to go they knew not where; and to save the lives of all of these many thousands now devolved on Brigham Young, even to look after the possibilities for transportation, to learn the way, to open roads, to see that all had food, and then protect them from the tomahawk, scalping knife and bullet; and when in the Valleys, to measure out land, to formulate laws, and to counsel the people how to save a pittance from swarms of crickets and locusts that ravaged their field.
And for some years, President Young, with all the people, were devotedly seeking to save the souls of the people alive, from starvation, with hope of a better day for education.
But enthused by the spirit of our leader, in every way-station on the road, in every town or ward settled after arriving in Utah, about the first house built by the people was for public school and meeting purposes. And that Brigham Young opposed education, with desire to keep his people in ignorance, is a monster in falsehood, for he was not only the pioneer in education in the mountain states, but so long as he lived he assisted it liberally with his means, and the Brigham Young Academy and College, in Utah, will continue to bear fruit to the honor of his name after his traducers with their falsehoods, are buried in forgetfulness, under the contempt of God and all just men.” — Benjamin F. Johnson (Benjamin F. Johnson letter to George S. Gibbs, 1903, CHL)

Brigham Young then turned the education of the saints entirely over to satan. Labor unions were then formed to make certain that parents would never be in charge of their children's education again. Skull and Bones came to the University of Utah to make sure that satan had leaders in high places at all times. Then in 1963 God was kicked out of public schools forever. This whole time the church did nothing to have truth taught in schools. Utah's government has always been LDS, but at no time did the Mormons stand up for God, truth, or righteousness.

They could have stood sovereign and ordered all police and national guard units to kill federal agents on sight if they stepped foot on Utah soil. It's likely the government would have backed down as Mormons were financially secure and high in number by then. Not to mention armed. Or maybe they could have voted on it and said "Nope, that won't fly in Utah."

But instead, every president of the church has allowed the government to do whatever they want and even joined satan's democrat party to prove agreement.

At this point the vast majority of Mormons, and all current “leadership” have been educated and completely “schooled” by Babylon. They are not leaders. They are followers, and they are following the world.

See how satan taught children to be stupid. Why are the divine attributes of bugs not discussed. If Brigham Young had shown this video to congress, the government would have had to agree that government has no place in education. But even now, the designs and technology of bugs are not understood, and show clearly that government schools have been wrong from the very beginning. People should realize that public school is completely satanic.
