Isaiah 14
Isaiah 14 is a challenging chapter, although it starts in a joyful, simple to understand manner. The challenge comes from identifying who the king of Babylon is and from identifying those who are allowed to in verse 29.
Initially, it starts by announcing that Jehovah will again own Israel. So, Israel's period of turmoil and tribulation is coming to an end. The children of Israel at this point will begin missionary work and will gain proselytes who will serve in the house of Israel and will live in safety with the Lord, Jesus Christ. Then the chapter describes how the children of Israel will take up a taunt against the king of Babylon, joyful that his oppression has ended.
To my understanding, the king of Babylon, in the truest sense, is Satan. However, this also refers to the end times tyrant. Double meanings are not rare in scripture, particularly in Isaiah. It is Satan who ascends to the heights thinking to become higher than God. It is Satan who was the true driving force behind the establishment of Babylon and and it's wicked ways. It is Satan who will be bound and thrust down by the righteousness of the remnants of Israel.
But this chapter also describes the fate of the end times tyrant. This leader will have led his nation into devastation through the war he pursues against Egypt, meaning the United States. Due to the intervention of the Lord and his end times servant, the king of Assyria will be defeated. We do not know who this is, but Vladimir Putin might fill the bill, although this is yet to be seen.
It is moving and sad to read of the fate of these individuals. Both are spirits with great potential who have chosen the path of destruction. The end times tyrant will be denied even a burial, and his corpse will be left to decompose in plain view. The oracle in verse 29 is concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, the viper descending from King Ahaz and the end times servant, or the Prince David who will be a fiery flying serpent, or a dragon, to the Assyrians and their allies.
The Philistines mentioned in verse 29 represent the combined Assyrian army referred to in verse 25. That verse states that the Assyrian defeat will occur in the Lord's own land, Judea. So, it fits that verse 29 explains that the Lord and his servant will be the source of this defeat. This repetition is common in Hebrew prophecy
This chapter ends by describing the start of Zion. Many of the Lord's long suffering saints will find refuge there!
