In my view, the uninspired and untempered promotion of “higher” education has produced a bunch of consumptive, unproductive “educated” idiots, who espouse the prosperity gospel.

I'd say any mom who is against education isn't funny or sarcasm. And to make a case the church pushes concept of education to make money is out of line. And isn't funny at all. And wasn't taken as funny or sarc by any posters on either side.Mamabear wrote: ↑October 13th, 2023, 4:06 pmOooo so shameful that I have a name with “mom” in it and use sarcasm in the title of a thread and say such horrid, untrue things about such trustworthy men with the purest of motives. Silly and foolish perspective. Always, everyone, even tradesmen need education. If you have none, then you'll follow the MSM! Good advice. I'm sorry if you feel your children are better off without education, sorry in deed. I told my kids to get as much school as they could. I only paid for first 4 years. Some have good careers others still working tradesman jobs. I don't care. But, all have had enough to be able to compete in a society where their peers have PhD's in BS and gender bending, etc....
I suppose I should ignore this, it seems an ignorant plea to find fault with any statement from anyone LDS! I'd say evil is trying to provoke someone for no reason.......... That is all I can get from the OP, I didn't even see the OP claimed statement or anything like it. And from someone with "mom" in their name. Shameful. IMO.
It is sad that people feel ignorance is bliss. And education and money may be linked but there is much more to education than getting a job. I suppose most mom's do know that, hell my mom did in the 50's back when no body in my family ever went to college but her. Two year degree but she led the way. Glad she didn't say education is bad or for money and then you'll have to pay more tithes.

Well, as usual, you needed to attack someone for no reason. You said in an earlier post that you were incapable of lying. That is a lie. But back to the issue at hand, she did not say that education was bad. You, who are the number one complainer on earth that someone said you said something that you did not, should of all people know that she did not say what you inferred that she said. That makes you guilty of a false accusation. Everyone on this board knows that I am right. No Charley. I KNOW auto mechanics is easy ... and FUN!
That's why I have been doing it all my life, in spite of an advanced "professional" degree that I did use for a long time (unlike 1/2 of the others with the same degree). And it is/was a degree that I much more like not using, than using.
And no, I'm not the only one that did it that way.

I think we have different definitions of easy and possibly fun. Lol. I’ve been fixing cars since before I could legally drive and professionally for about 30 years. From 15hp deux chevaux to 1200 hp drag cars, Acura to zastava and most things in between. I rarely don’t beat book time and have very few return with the same problems. It is not easy, important sure, rewarding? Sometimes, a reliable way to make a living absolutely but usually not easy and often not any fun. You must work on different stuff than I do. Concourse cars and hot rods with near unlimited budgets?
Back to the main topic, for most kids I know college is a continuation of the absurdity of high school with a bit more perceived autonomy and even more group think with an end of crushing inescapable debt. Apprenticeship or some form of on the job training is much more likely to produce efficient skilled people who not only don’t have a huge debt at the end with nothing useful to show but they don’t have to be retrained to do thing properly and they have been self sufficient or at least a lot more so with little or no debt. College/university have an important place, but not for most people. Education is important and good if it brings you to the Lord, but what is passed for education these days mostly does the opposite, and inspires pride and arrogance and superiority over those who are “less”.

Yup.
Intellectuals, but not intelligent.
Heavy on theories, light on reality.
Impractical.
Put another way, they are fragile and can only survive in the world that has been carefully created to control them.
When things get real, they will be the first to lose the game of life.
Funny thing, if they would read the scriptures they would know God gave three commandments to mankind from the beginning that He never revoked.
1. Multiply and replenish
2. Tend the animals
3. Till the Earth
When properly followed they provide both temporal and spiritual safety.
I think it no small irony that people can't even figure out how to make babies anymore.
They generally keep animals that may provide companionship and protection, but not food and clothing.
They think food comes from a grocery store and, my favorite, complain when the farmers "take too much water!"
Yeah, most people are toast.

I'm not attacking anyone. Read the first few posts. Go ahead, I just did. It is a sarcastic post about the evils of education and putting down a statement (two actually) by LDS leaders that education is good. Ending with a "LOL" in her post. Later, she said she meant is "sarcastically" but it wasn't "sarc" up front.Fred wrote: ↑October 13th, 2023, 10:10 pm

The follow on few posts were all over the value of lack of education and evil of being educated, then on to the only reason (all made up by this point) that all the church wants is higher income earners for tithes. All made up here.
NOW FRED. show me where I lied. First off, If I did say something incorrect (haven't seen that yet), then It was innocent and YOU AGAIN with your arrogant knowledge assigned my intent. You need intent to lie. Do I need to refresh you like RW in the past about the English definition of "lie"? I have no intent to tell anything untrue. None at all and no motivation. My point is clear. The entire purpose of this thread, as laid out with the OP title and intro ending in "LOL" is to put down leaders that say education is good. I'm sorry, but anyone so lost as to think Jesus said remain in ignorance, or just fish for food, is mistaken and frankly dangerous in this day and age.
BTW I never said anything against uneducated people. As I stated my mom was first in my family to go to college. but my dad got his HS degree by Navy credit after the Korean War. I would never put him down, never. I also mentioned I have children with professional and others in trades. I never put one above the other. so show me my lie.

I spent a few years in Indiana.
Catholics vs. The Mormons football always got people riled up.
They use to show "Godmakers" at high school assemblies as well.
Thank goodness for the Amish. Good people.

https://www.britannica.com/topic/education
Education
"Discipline that is concerned with methods of teaching and learning in schools or school-like environments as opposed to various nonformal and informal means of socialization (e.g., rural development projects and education through parent-child relationships).
Education can be thought of as the transmission of the values and accumulated knowledge of a society. In this sense, it is equivalent to what social scientists term socialization or enculturation. Children—whether conceived among New Guinea tribespeople, the Renaissance Florentines, or the middle classes of Manhattan—are born without culture. Education is designed to guide them in learning a culture, molding their behaviour in the ways of adulthood, and directing them toward their eventual role in society."
As defined above education is a force for good and bad.

I always liked this short scene (under a minute) from the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, where she explains the difference between "education" and "indoctrination" (which she calls "intrusion") to the Head Mistress (principal). It seems we have a lot of "intrusion" in schools not "education". (Although if you watch the film and read the book, you'll find Jean Brodie's motivations are not entirely noble.)
I hope you can get past the ridiculous old school (literally!) upper middle class Edinburgh accents*.
I hope you can get past the ridiculous old school (literally!) upper middle class Edinburgh accents*.
* This is the so called Morningside accent, which is almost extinct now, although I used to meet people who talked like this back in the day. (Glasgow had a few people like this as well.) When Scotland became part of the United Kingdom, some of the richer women in Edinburgh wanted to sound like upper class English people. They enlisted an Irish actor Thomas Sheridan (1719 – 1788) to give them elocution lessons. The result was mixed... they certainly sounded more English and could be understood by them, but they also retained some Scottish cadences and letter pronunciations... and ended up with a strange new accent of their own. The actress Maggie Smith reused this accent for the Harry Potter films by the way.

I venture to say that the U.S. public school system has been one of the single biggest tools of the adversary for teaching and embracing consumptive, socialistic, Anti-Christian, Babylonian values. That is the primary effect of the “education” that system is providing. The record speaks for itself. What is the evidence to the contrary?

Let's see Abraham's story really starts when he wants to learn about the "fathers", and wants to attend Melchizedek's school for gifted and rich in Saudi where he's also growing myrrh of which his region is known. Joseph taught that the more knowledge we gain in this life the better. I could go on. Sure some educated people are full of it, but it is the uneducated around the world that follow sheepish leaders w/o ever knowing the truth.

The church Corporation is grooming the next generation. Due to the fact most of the educated (They Think They're Educated) are sick, dying, or dead. Their inflated egos got the best of them. They followed the Godsend jab script. The church is looking for more tithe payers. The Lord wants more Spiritual Education not the earthly Education the church wants.

Not sure if using Abraham's story from the Pearl of Great price is an authentic example you can trust. It was a funeral text. Not a record in the "hand of Abraham the father" as claimed by Joseph Smith. That reference is probably inadmissible in proctored debate on the issue.TheDuke wrote: ↑October 14th, 2023, 9:00 amok, I get is god, doesn't need education. He doesn't need to know much. Wow, now LDS FF is against education! Not all but according to this thread the majority. Does education make one wiser was asked. Surely the lack of it does make one less wise as without education there is no reading, writing, arithmetic, no where to balance the study of scriptures, no place to question let alone comprehend science.
I love it! Most FF members see a future that is much like that of Hezbollah! Men pulling plows while their pregnant wives do all work. Then go home and get drunk.! Live in ignorance.
I mean just revisit the twisted OP title....................... confusing the statement of Jesus of "fishers of men", i.e. catching people for the Lord vs. training of becoming a fisherman. Intent, seems to be to say foolish people get educated. Smart ones, let someone else get educated. Try some stats on that. Of course then I recall outrage on someone making $160K and wondering what they'd do with it.
Do you really think god is uneducated? Do you really think all heaven is about is plowing fields and singing in choirs and eternity of ignorance? I felt some here read JS and modern scriptures. It seems very few. Perhaps I'm over educated, I mean trying to read scriptures and stories and such and not take Sushi's word or Baldwin's word,..........................................

Can be the case, but it depends what it's in and what you use it for. I think STEM requires a lot more discipline in some senses but the humanities have been wrecked by what they call "bad actors" these days. Don't get me wrong, I love art and literature, but I wonder if university courses really understand them or can teach them properly.David13 wrote: ↑October 14th, 2023, 10:54 am I have known many people who have 'degrees', some even brag about having a 'degree' as if it makes them 'better' or something in some way, but nonetheless they were in many ways dumb as mud.

Mynkids went to the super special fireside about education and they said that the speakers not only emphasized the importance of education but primarily the importance of going to a church owned college. College enrollment is slowly dropping across the board and if there arent enough students at BYU then how will the church launder the tithes from Canada?

It has just been my experience talking to some who have attended BYU/BYUI and they told me that these institutions are used as “church indoctrination” programs in their words. Typically when you go to a liberal minded college the student gets indoctrinated into the liberal mindset/lifestyle. When a student attends a church sponsored or owned school they get indoctrinated into the church “broke” lifestyle/mindset. BYU attendance and especially BYUI attendance is down I’ve heard. Without kids especially young women attending these schools they lose the indoctrination hold they held before same as kids opting out of a liberal college — the kids who opt out tend to be adopt a more independent minded and realistic life view based on hard work not class or social/institutional elitism.Erastothenes wrote: ↑October 14th, 2023, 6:08 pm Mynkids went to the super special fireside about education and they said that the speakers not only emphasized the importance of education but primarily the importance of going to a church owned college. Many of the BYU professors trend liberal anyways these days but this push is according to them meant to keep kids going to church schools so they’ll feel pressure to and have immediate social groups more likely to cause them to marry in the church, raise their kids in the church, and then their kids will grow up to fill church callings and be lifelong tithe payers according to those I’ve talked to. They’ll also be less likely to question church policies and doctrines. That’s why they’re emphasizing *church* school attendance. It strengthens their indoctrination hold according to some. But this post was not meant to trigger the Duke fyi

Mine did too. They offered free t-shirts and a "motivational" salesman, uh, speaker. Luckily my kids weren't fooled. They were actually turned off by the whole thing.Erastothenes wrote: ↑October 14th, 2023, 6:08 pm Mynkids went to the super special fireside about education and they said that the speakers not only emphasized the importance of education but primarily the importance of going to a church owned college. I think they must have done that at multiple locations in at least Idaho and Utah. The applications must be dropping fast enough to spook them.

Just seen this article on new members of the YW general advisory council. Without exception, each bio concentrates on the women's academic achievements and little else.

No college...no debt...own my own business...home is paid off....looking to buy another bigger home in cash.
Yes. I am uneducated but i am hard working.
Just so you know...in times of uncertainty the boss never gets fired.
I am sorry your perspective is that an uneducated person will never make it in life.
When you hit your salary cap...there is no end in sight to mine.
Don't listen to me though...I am just an ignoramus with no college degree...
