Nelson's Fall 2023 Talk

I don't know why, but Nelson's talk this conference struck me sideways. That guy can cheerfully say so many screwy things that I shake my head. I want to laugh and scream at the same time.
Probably no one else thinks it needs it's own thread but I'm going to start one anyway!
What was your favorite nugget from that gem?

I quoted the following scripture in my talk on Constitution Day last month:
D&C 105:1 Verily I say unto you who have assembled yourselves together that you may learn my will concerning the redemption of mine afflicted people—
2 Behold, I say unto you, were it not for the transgressions of my people, speaking concerning the church and not individuals, they might have been redeemed even now.
3 But behold, they have not learned to be obedient to the things which I required at their hands, but are full of all manner of evil, and do not impart of their substance, as becometh saints, to the poor and afflicted among them;
4 And are not united according to the union required by the law of the celestial kingdom;
5 And Zion cannot be built up unless it is by the principles of the law of the celestial kingdom; otherwise I cannot receive her unto myself.

What were the "screwy" things he said?
How about the 20 temples he announced that will probably never be built? That seems pretty screwy.
How about telling poor people that they should pay tithing without mentioning that he had a well off father who could backstop him and a future career he could borrow against? Or that D&C 1:24 says the Lord will talk to us according to our language, and then leaders try to tell us that "interest" means something it clearly doesn't mean? That seems really screwy to me.
Quoting Paul prophesying of deceiving spirits in the last days to get the saints to reject true criticisms? That's so satanic it's beyond screwy.
I could go on, but I doubt if it will help.

How about his head being CGI'ed to his body! The sizes didn't even match!
Didn't that drive you crazy? Why CGI his head onto a suit? Did an actor wear the suit? Why not just sit up at home and wear your suit?
How many times does it take to say "think Celestial" to count as brain washing? Did a fifteen year write that talk?
Now we have another dumb catch phrase! "When you want to masturbate, think Celestial"!

Yeah, that was insane! If you make $15 a month you should pay &1.50 in tithing.
How hard is it to read section 119 and see that tithing is paid on interest, not income.

I thought his talk was fine. I don't like how "thinking Celestial" is going to be the new buzzword. However we all should elevate our thoughts.
I don't think it was CGI, but it was clearly prerecorded and they could have been honest about that.

I believe in the correct application of tithing. However tithing as it is practiced now, is the greatest bondage of the LDS people.

Agreed. We also can't build Zion if we take the Lord's money and invest it in the stock market instead of using it to bless others.

I noticed that the speakers will always teach correct principles and then somehow alter it slightly to the actual application means greater adherence to the LDS church itself.
Following true prophets is correct, but that doesn't mean always follow President Nelson.
Paying tithing is true, but that doesn't mean a flat 10% tax.
Following God is true, but that doesn't mean a "covenant path".
Elevating our thoughts is true, but that doesn't mean "thinking celestial" is revelation for our day.
Receiving personal revelation is true, but that doesn't mean we can only listen to approved sources.

For the average member it’s near impossible when the church teaches in dozens of publications (and even this very GC) that tithing is on your income. Oh, and suck it up, you don’t need to know how they spend it.

I thought he gave a great talk.
The admonition to "think Celestial" when we are faced with trials, temptations, and all we do is spot on. I also really liked what he said about the importance of being chaste and sincerely repenting if we have been unchaste.

Agreed. Even though it was announced on the website, social media, TheChurchNews, etc., it would have been nice to mention it in GC.

I don't think it means what the Lds corp thinks it means

That's the thing. They do say good things. Just enough good things to keep people sedated. But, when you dig deeper on some of the things they say they are full of lies and hypocrisy.
For example, President Nelson tells poor people to pay tithing through his struggling resident example, all while neglecting to mention that general authorities are not required to pay tithing on their "modest stipends" and other gold-plated benefits. The hypocrisy is galling.
(I know, some of you will say that we don't KNOW that general authorities don't pay tithing and that I'm assuming that. Well, when the question is asked and they won't say, and it is completely in their favor to say that they don't have an exemption, then it becomes a little more than an assumption.)
