They really weren't. Most of these same people went through early 2020 complaining about people wearing masks and holding to the official advice (back then) that they didn't work.
The reason for that was quite simple. At that point in time barely anywhere sold them.
When the authorities ordered these people to wear them,
then they started bullying everyone else to wear them. I remember this well, because I'm someone who did the exact opposite. I loathe these things now, and found they made me cough all the time.
The key point here is that the people who wore masks early on did so of their own volition and choice. I'm not saying they were right necessarily but that was the case. The other folk are just obedient little puppies who believe everything someone in power tells them. If the government told them jumping off a tall cliff would stop them dying from the virus they'd do it (technically true in one sense!!!)
