So the whole Nephilim thing is weird right?
As an aside, please put a link here if there are already threads that discuss this. When I did a forum search it came up with random mentions in threads on other topics, but I didn’t come across any dedicated thread, which surprised me. I’m happy to read what’s already been written if there is a thread I can’t find.
Back to the topic at hand. I watched a random compilation video (I’ll put the link at the end of this post) with lots of different ideas about the Nephilim and the whole concept of them is just strange to me, and only brought up more questions. However, I feel like maybe they’re going to be more important to understand as we enter an age of technological genetic manipulation. Anyway, the video suggested a lot of the gods and demigods from many cultures were likely Nephilim who had risen to power through their stature, strength and ferocity. I feel like that’s a decent possibility. Anyway, a few stream of conciousness questions:
Who were these fallen angels before they fell? How did they get to their high spiritual stature?
How did they get wiped out? The flood makes a lot of sense, but how did Goliath exist long after the flood? It appears they weren’t all killed off.
Were they just mixtures of angel and humans, or was there genetic manipulation involved in their creation? Both?
Are fallen angels and humans different species from each other? If so, how did their combined offspring continue to reproduce? Aren’t the offspring of different species sterile? Are angels and humans more like different breeds? The aforementioned video talks about how ligers (cross between lion and tiger) often have gigantism, which could explain why an angel / human crossbreed would produce giants.
Why is Nephi’s name a nod to Nephilim? Is it just because he was a really large baby? Is there more to it? It’s there nothing to it and the names just happen to be similar? Is it possible Sariah was raped or seduced by a fallen angel and when he was born they knew he wasn’t Lehi’s son, but he raised him as his own, and despite that ancestry, Nephi was righteous, rather than the Nephilim stereotype? Maybe that’s why his older brothers hated him so much, not just because they felt like they were supposed to be in charge? Maybe that’s why Lehi was so grateful his other sons accepted Nephi? Totally out there theory of my own, but I had to throw it out there.
The video goes over numerous news articles, mostly from the 1800s about people all over the world finding giant bones, the Smithsonian coming to check it out and taking the bones for examination and display, and then no info about them coming out of the Smithsonian. Why don’t we hear about giant bone discoveries now from either the past or present?
Anyway, here is the video I watched:

Posting this is not any kind of endorsement. It skips back and forth between lots of different videos and I probably would have preferred to watch each video in its own context. I also didn’t fact check any of this. I just found some of the ideas interesting and thought-provoking.
Let me have all you’ve got on the Nephilim!

Re: Nephilim
I neither believe nor disbelief in fallen angel hybrids over "sons of God" merely being righteous people... But it is significantly more interesting! El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is one of my favorite video games and revolves largely around the idea.
How giants continued after the flood, if my memory of how it supposedly works serves me correctly, is that some nephilim blood continued through Ham or his wife.(?)
How do angels and humans interbreed? Angels are simply human beings who are spirits, or have been resurrected. If a mortal and a resurrected person are compatible, the resulting child would probably not be half-God like Jesus was, but still inherit some form of beauty or strength from the resurrected personage's genes. Like an aasimar! This creates two questions, though:
- If the Watchers were spirits, how did they reproduce?
- If the Watchers were resurrected, wasn't Jesus the very first resurrected being among God's children?
Genetic manipulation? Maybe. I suppose that era was either:
- An extremely nomadic, low-tech world as commonly supposed.
- Full of wonders in architecture, technology, and understanding of physics. If it was like this, that may be the Watchers' fault, and perhaps a lesser reason for the flood.
As for Nephi's name? I don't know. Hugh Nibley's commented on it in relation to Egyptian, but I don't recall much else. His origin? Not touching that one.

Re: Nephilim
Get ahold of Mike Heiser's book "The Unseen Realm" (I found a free PDF online). He'll give you a Bible scholar's point of view, one who knows Hebrew as most of the old OT manuscripts are in Hebrew. I just finished the book and here's what I remember.
The Nephilim were offspring of the "sons of God" who (divine beings, creations of God who belonged to his heavenly or divine council) took upon them human form (meaning flesh) and mated with the good looking daughters of man. This constituted a rebellion against Yahweh.
Heiser writes:
"Genesis 6:1–4 is far from being peripheral in importance. It furthers the theme of conflict between divine rebels (the “seed of the nachash”) and humanity that will impede the progress of Eden’s restoration. It is one of two passages in the Old Testament that fundamentally frame the history of Israel as a people and a land." (My note: "the nachash" is the word/term/name for the character in the Garden of Eden that tempted Eve. He isn't called Satan until the NT.)
The Nephilim were "giants," which may mean they were anywhere from 6'5" to almost 10' tall.
"Fallen angels" are divine beings and thus are not of the same species as humans. Divine beings don't die, except, according to Psalms 82, the one who rebel against Yahweh will, including the nachash.
Heiser says Jude 5-7 talks about this, particularly verse 6. Here is 6-7 in the translation he most commonly used in the book:
"And the angels who did not keep to their own domain but deserted their proper dwelling place, he has kept in eternal bonds under deep gloom for the judgment of the great day,
7 as Sodom and Gomorrah and the towns around them indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire in the same way as these, are exhibited as an example by undergoing the punishment of eternal fire."
The Nephilim caused Israel all kinds of problems. The reason Joshua was told to completely wipe out certain areas of Canaan was there were descendants of Nephilim spread throughout and Yahweh wan't their seed completely annihilated. Joshua didn't finish the job and the Philistines, who had that blood in them, were a thorn in Israel's side for years.
There's much more in the book about Nephilim.
Joseph Smith changed "sons of God" to "sons of men." I have trouble understanding why as it doesn't make sense for Yahweh to want to wipe out most of mankind, later in the flood, because some "members" married "nonmembers." Something to ponder when I'm bored..

Re: Nephilim
IMO, they weren't fallen angels as we would assume it to mean--either a mistranslation or a different meaning.
Spirits having physical children? No.
Resurrected beings before Jesus, means not of this earth--means not a part of its history.
Some very interesting things can happen on this earth, that we have little clue about. Look at spontaneous generation, peak states (real ones that can be attained permanently), energy fields, all kinds of mind-blowing things, etc.
Maybe they did get wiped out from the Flood. Then someone, somewhere, started again.
All the Nephi stuff? Nah.
Steve Quayle's website on giants is pretty cool.

Also, reports of a giant in a cave in the Middle East that fought it out with special forces a few years ago.
Where does Bigfoot fit in all of this?
