Joseph Smith's seer stone was described by Martin Harris as being a chocolate brown in color and about the size and smoothness of an Egg. The words would show up in white lettering, and as soon as the text was written another line would appear. If it wasn't correctly copied the white lettering would stay until correct. And "white" lettering, not black, brown, green, blue or purple.

If the text function of a cell phone was white lettering I'd want to be in a dark location. I thought it odd that he used his top hat, but it makes sense to use one to read the lettering during the daytime.

Emma was the first scribe and said the same, first person account in her diary. Oliver Cowdery's diary was the same in every detail. We have three first person accounts of the same. Many times Joseph would wear the apron containing the Urim and Thummim under his clothing, and felt a revelatory spirit during the day.

Translating by the gift and power of God was the most marvelous thing Oliver Cowdery had ever witnessed. He wanted to try. Joseph's history says that Oliver "became exceedingly anxious to have the power to translate bestowed upon him." Joseph asked the Lord and received Doctrine and Covenants 8, a revelation to Oliver.

The Lord assures Oliver Cowdery in Doctrine and Covenants 8 that he will learn the knowledge of anciently engraved scriptures if he seeks it honestly, in faith, believing in the Lord's promise. The Lord will tell Oliver this knowledge in his heart by the power of the Holy Ghost. This spirit of revelation guided Moses in leading the children of Israel safely through the Red Sea. It is now Oliver's gift. "Apply unto it," the Lord commands him (v. 4). It can deliver Oliver from his enemies as powerfully as it did Moses from his. The Lord commands Oliver to remember these words, his commandments, this gift. And he reminds Oliver of his other gift: the gift possessed by Moses' brother, Aaron---the gift of working with a divining rod. It has already told Oliver many things (D&C 6) Only God can cause it to bless Oliver. He should not doubt it. It is God's gift to him. He can hold it in his hands. He can do marvelous works with it. No power can take it from him, for it is God's work. Whatever Oliver asks by that means, the Lord will grant. But he must ask in faith. Without faith he can do nothing. The Lord commands Oliver not to trifle with the gift nor ask for things he ought not. What should he ask for? He should ask to know the mysteries of God. He should ask to translate and receive knowledge from ancient records that have been kept hidden. The Lord will grant these desires according to Oliver's faith, just as he has done for Oliver all along.

Using the divining rod can settle the original question posed: are there 7 spiritual levels or are there 7 spiritual levels to the spirit world?

If you are unfamiliar with divining rods, you should study up by obtaining a book called "The Divining Hand" by Christopher Bird.

What the book doesn't tell you is this. "Always pray that the rods will be guided by God and none else."

The rods are one of the mysteries of God, that we can use with his blessing. You can gain a great deal of knowledge in a short time, as fast as you are able. Always ask in faith and remember to not trifle with the gift, asking for things you ought not, for this gift can be taken from you. (what that looks like is you won't get any answers for a time, until you have truly repented)

Oliver kept the use of the rods sacred, he did not trifle with his gift or make it known to unbelievers.

Moroni 10: 8 "And again, I exhort you, my brethren, that ye deny not the gifts of God, for they are many; and they come from the same God. And there are different ways that these gifts are administered; but it is the same God who worketh all in all; and they are given by the manifestations of the Spirit of God unto men, to profit them."

Moroni 10:24 "And now I speak unto all the ends of the earth--that if the day cometh that the power and gifts of God shall be done away among you, it shall be because of unbelief.
25. And wo be unto the children of men if this be the case; for there shall be none that doeth good among you, no not one. For if there be one among you that doeth good, he shall work by the power and gifts of God.

D&C 130:18-19 "Whatever principle of intelligence we attain unto in this life, it will rise with us in the resurrection. 19. And if a person gains more knowledge in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come."

Divination has been done through cards, coins, rods, straws, and a number of other random and semi random tools like pendulums.

It's all derived from the person's own energetic aura and skill. Like swimming.
