Re: LDS Church is suing Cody, Wyoming
I know people who got headaches and etc from having to wear a mask at church, yet if they didn't give up their right to breathe free they were accused of not being Christlike. The Church can do the same, and give up their right to build in that spot.Serragon wrote: ↑August 19th, 2023, 10:20 amI think there is a vast difference between how we treat our neighbors and how we interact with government. Suing our neighbors would likely not be Christlike at all. Seeking legal redress against government when the government violates your rights very well might be.
If the council had voted not to allow the exception and the church then sued them I would be right on board with what you are suggesting. That would not be very Christlike. But here we have government lying in an attempt to play politics and deny the church's rights without following the proscribed method for handling this issue. I don't see pushing back against corrupt governments as unchristlike at all.
somehow this keeps getting portrayed as the church vs the citizens of Cody. it is not. There are always people who do not want the temples in their communities. And these people will use any excuse or reason to try and draw sympathy for their cause. I have personally witnessed this multiple times in communities I have lived. But the existence of people who do not want the temple is not evidence that the church should not have legal rights to use their property or to push back against the government when they start with shenanigans that violate those rights.
If the citizens of Cody do not want the temple there, they should make that known to their city council. If the city council does not want the temple there, they should vote to not allow the exception to the height limit which would likely cause the church to pick a new location. But what is currently happening from the government is unacceptable.

Re: LDS Church is suing Cody, Wyoming
Gads are about rules for thee not for me.
Let me ask what if the tables were turned?
If Cody wanted to build a Six Flags family entertainment theme park right next to the temple blocking its view from the city operating 7 days a week, what headlines would we see then? We could say it is within their legal right but but but what about the sound for the neighboring temple and it would be a monstrosity for people who want to enjoy the beauty of the temple?
Just substitute temple for nature and we can begin to understand the beauties of God that these simple folk appreciate having lived in the middle of nowhere for decades long before the Kirton-ites ever darkened their doorstep.

Yes, according to the traditional history of the Big Horn Basin, which was the last area settled by Mormon colonization in the west at the beginning of the 20th century, a church authority came to Lovell Stake and told them that if they paid their tithing and worked hard there would be a temple built in Lovell. The local members have never forgotten this and bring it up from time to time.

The citizens of Cody have made their wishes very clear. I have driven along the road to where the temple will be in Cody. The number of “please relocate the temple” are everywhere. If you drove around town then you would see that the citizens of Cody have spoken.Serragon wrote: ↑August 19th, 2023, 10:20 amI think there is a vast difference between how we treat our neighbors and how we interact with government. If I remember the story correctly, the church announced a temple in Erda, Tooele County, Utah--a very rural area also. The people didn't want their area to become a high traffic area with new roads replacing the 2 lane country roads. They raised a stink and the church abandoned the plans. The church went to a nearly area where the people would not be upset with the location.

A poll being conducted by the local newspaper just for those who think the citizens of Cody are being listened to by the church- you know, the only true church on the earth.
