Council of Twelve

Post by Pazooka »

Shortly before he died, Jesus set up a provisional government with twelve regional officials, one over each of the twelve tribes or districts of Israel, and he left his brother James at the head of this fledgling government.

~ The Jesus Dynasty: The Hidden History of Jesus, His Royal Familly, and the Birth of Christianity, James D. Tabor
Things pointed out by the author about the Twelve include:

- The meaning of the Greek word translated “apostle” = “delegate” or envoy
- The twelve made up the king’s inner cabinet (not a “First Presidency's” inner cabinet)
- The intention was that each would sit on a “throne,” one over each of the tribes
- The Dead Sea Scrolls community had also been structured around an inner Council of Twelve
- It is suspected that four of Jesus’ brothers were among the twelve (“Matthew” also called “Levi son of Alphaeus”, James, Jude also called “Judas of James” and Simon) and they are always listed last by the writers of the Gospels

One of the Davidic Messiah’s main tasks was to assemble the tribes of Israel and he would do it using the Twelve.

Like Tabor says in his preface, “Rather than being the founder of a church, Jesus was claimant to a throne…These “royals” were not only watched, but also at critical times even hunted down and executed…Christians gradually lost the recognition that Jesus was part of a large family, the members of which exercised dynastic leadership among his followers.

This is why Joseph Smith set up the Council of Fifty with both political AND spiritual authority… and why the keys of the Priesthood were given to the Twelve “in connection with that Council” (of Fifty).

Yes, and he had himself declared king.

Absent, however, is the tribal element - which Jesus had even though there were yet only 3 tribes in Palestine if you count the fraction of Levi.

We, at least pay lip service to the tribes of Israel - which is more than most denominations.

Not in the pattern set forth by Jesus, but this is how:

At the head of this Church are three men who are united in all things as to its government, representing the Holy Trinity who also are one; not one in personality, but one in spirit, one in faith, one in action, one in desire, one in object. We have a President and two Counselors, who stand at the head of the Church. The President stands at the head of that quorum. ~ Charles Penrose

Whereas Jesus would have been in touch with the concept of God celebrated in the following Sabbath Song contemporary with his day. Notice that the divine name has been interpreted here as “CAUSE” (as in “causes to be”):
Blessed are You, CAUSE our God, Sovereign of the Universe, who chose good prophets and desired their words to be spoken in truth; blessed are You, CAUSE, who chooses the Teaching and Moses THEIR[1] servant and Israel THEIR people and the prophets of truth and righteousness. Amen.

And the CAUSE is in THEIR holy palace; be silent before THEM, all the earth!
