Cold Frame Gardening

Have any of you tried cold frame gardening? I am looking at plans to build a couple frames so that I can grow salad greens throughout colder months. As I would like to supplement our diets in the winter with a variety of fresh foods.
I have found several designs and free plans to build cold frames....
Just curious to know if any of you have tips for materials that are best (still being cost effective). I am thinking about using some old 2x8's from the old barn and I am looking for cheap used windowpanes for the tops.
...And what plants grow best?? I am working out gardening in my head to have the most variety of fresh and hearty foods growing year around; utilizing the greenhouse and cold frames in colder months.
We have fairly mild winters, only dipping into freezing temps for a few weeks each year.
On the flip side, our gardens tend to suffer in the heat of summer.
This will be the first year that I set aside my own seeds to try to cultivate again. (Something I should have been learning years ago!)
