This is a horrible incident, but setting yourself on fire like that is not hard to do. Staying on fire is the hard thing to do. He doesn't seem that bothered about it while most of us would be screaming or trying to put ourselves out.

The problem in our society is that psychiatric confinement can be worse than prison. (I'm not sure if it is the case in the USA, but it certainly appears to be here.) We have at least got to the stage where mental health problems are acknowledged, instead of hidden. The medication often tends to have extreme side effects such as destroying the liver.

The autistic unemployment rate here is horrific in fact, in spite of the fact that some of these people are more than capable of working, and some are among the brightest people I know.

Good point about identity. I guess I should drill down a little more and clarify. Yes, certain mental conditions can be part of our identities and we should acknowledge them and accept that they exist. However, the push seems to be to embrace it to the point that people just accept certain conditions and celebrate them to the point of not seeking help or they become the main facet of their identity. For example, look at the trans/gender thing right now. How many people have indulged it to the point that that's all they are- whatever their so-called gender(s) is, nothing else? The same is happening for others with different mental issues. They are being told that that is all or the primary identity of who they are. I have a cousin who autistic (high functioning). He has finally accepted that part of himself and is better for it and more capable knowing that he is different and that is okay. But that is not who he is. It is only a part of his identity.
