First just a little bit about myself. I am in my 68th year and joined Christ's Church when I was forty. Up till that time I was hard drinking, fighting in the bars a lousy husband and father, breaker of laws and a pile of other things that were of the natural man. At the age of forty I didn't like who I was or what I was doing. I said my first prayer in over 25 years, it was simple. God I need help. Two days later there was a knock on my door and it was to Missionaries from Jesus Christ's Church. They said you called and I said no I didn't but come on in anyway. I found out later my oldest daughter saw one of the commercials for the Church on television. She called the number and said go to my dads house. Our Heavenly Father works through other people to answer our prayers. IT WAS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE. I joined the Church nine months later and here are some of the blessings I have from being part of it. I know that God lives that my 40 years of sins were forgiven through Christ's sacrifice. I quit drinking and smoking never to this day touched either again. I know the role of the Holy Spirit as a revelator and testifier and comforter amongst other things. I have The Holy Priesthood of The Son Of God and have been a part of miracles preformed through it. I have an awesome wife and a 200 acer farm. I have God given wisdom in my life. I don't fear death as I know that the time I spend here on earth is just a drop in the bucket compared to eternity with Jesus Christ in Charge. I have learned to forgive and not to judge. I live in the area of five first nations reserves and have served on the largest in the maritime provinces. I have learned their history through The Book Of Mormon and by learning some of their language and customs they verify The Book of Mormon history. I use the words I know instead of I think in my life in regards to the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Church. I could go on for some time but I'll finish with what is most important to me. I have the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost.Mamabear wrote: ↑February 24th, 2023, 1:17 pm I’ll go first:

Thanks for sharing. I can relate to feeling I wasted many years too. Sometimes it’s so hard to move forward and not question the “what ifs”.JandD6572 wrote: ↑February 25th, 2023, 2:47 amright there with you, with the exception of divorce. I kind of got ran out so to say. But I have never felt so free from a weight off my shoulders. I never truly believed in the church, I tried though, but my heart was never there. 57 years wasted, so many years, I dreamed of wanting to become a pastor of a church somewhere. But today, too old, and too far in debt to even be able to consider it whenever I would talk with my bishop or sp about it, you would think I was asking to run the church itself. I should have listened to my heart and inner self a long time ago. I honestly think, that my very first marriage could have been maybe saved, if I would have listened to my heart, rather than listen to the demands of the corporation.Mamabear wrote: ↑February 24th, 2023, 1:17 pm I’ll go first:

A person can “leave” the LDS Church without leaving a local ward or branch. It is all about establishing boundaries. It is easier now that the home teaching/visiting teaching program has been abandoned. Nobody in my ward is “ministering”. It isn’t necessary to inform everyone of your truth. Attend sacrament meeting and take the sacrament. Give what you want. Only accept callings you want to accept or don’t accept any callings at all. If you believe in the restoration, but not in LDS Inc, enjoy what you can. The only really cult-like activity in the Church is the temple. I’ve found I don’t need it, but I still enjoy being with church members. You do you and let other people do them. Trust in Jesus and quit stressing over the rest.

Alcohol is empty, unhealthy, and will drain your "wealthier" blessing. And take care with the caffeine and don't drink it too late it will disrupt your circadian rhythm and therefore hormones as well. Thankfully I dislike the taste of coffee.
Currently, 1 cup of coffee each morning. I grew up on it from a young age. It didn’t stunt my growth, I actually grew tall quite quickly. Lol
Once I realised the WoW was a recommendation not a commandment then I went from there. Now I drink wine like Jesus did.
Wine in moderation, especially red wine, is a healthy beverage. In my opinion, if a person is not prone to alcoholism, a glass of wine with dinner every evening would not be unhealthy, nor does it need to be expensive.
It was recommended to a friend by a doctor for medicinal purposes. Helped him sleep better at night.

Re: What blessings have you seen since quitting church?
Name another that you couldn’t avoid by avoiding the temple. You don’t have to go declare tithing or even go to Sunday School. If the Bishop wants to interview you or your kids you can just say no. You can decide how much activity you will have in the Church. I can remember telling an Elders Quorum President that I didn’t participate in PPIs. My home teaching assignments were taken away thankfully. I only attend sacrament meeting with my family weekly and they never bother me anymore.Reluctant Watchman wrote: ↑February 25th, 2023, 8:34 amOnly one cult-like activity?Christianlee wrote: ↑February 25th, 2023, 8:04 am A person can “leave” the LDS Church without leaving a local ward or branch. Re: What blessings have you seen since quitting church?
I can only speak for myself but I drank coffee quite heavily for the past seven years because of my 12-hour continental shifts. I retired from work at the end of December and my caffeine intake has decreased significantly. I'm slowly getting back to a regular schedule wherein I'm up early and back to bed early. It took me a while to notice the detrimental effects of constant heavy use but after a while you cannot escape the fact that you are angry and irritable a lot of the time. I'm in a much better place now and although I drink a lot less, I still have a few cups per day.ransomme wrote: ↑February 24th, 2023, 2:03 pm"Funny" how so many run towardsMamabear wrote: ↑February 24th, 2023, 1:17 pm I’ll go first:

I don't think there is an issue with drinking wine/beer in a moderate fashion but we all have our interpretation of "moderate." As with other substances it is possible to develop a bad relationship with alcohol and coffee/tea. Maybe wine bottles should carry a warning label such as, "Constant Drinking Will Lead to Constant Drinking"; Baddam Psh!

If you never drink, you will never become an alcoholic. I have seen too many descend into alcoholism. There is simply very little upside to drinking alcohol and enough risk that I would always say it is best to avoid it. Re: What blessings have you seen since quitting church?
When I put self care and self love in my original post, I meant that I’m not a burnt out church bot anymore.
And I also like myself now despite my flaws. I really hated myself as a church member. I felt like I had to be super skinny and maintain a certain look. I was also ashamed of not measuring up spiritually all the time. In reality I wasn’t doing much wrong, but I had a lot of anxiety that I was, and I didn’t like myself because I wasn’t doing the 500 things on the Mormon checklist.
I sometimes wonder if my spirit knew something was amiss as a church member but I never let my heart and mind consider it. Did anyone else experience similar self loathing?

Re: What blessings have you seen since quitting church?
I haven't been to church for about four years and this is how my life has changed:
- I no longer pay tithing. This has allowed me to help out members of my family who were struggling financially. I've become more generous but there is a lot of room for improvement. I was not trying to pat myself on the back, merely noting a change in a positive direction.
- I study the scriptures a lot more.
- I miss some of the social events. Some of them were rather special.
- I miss some of the work projects and fund-raisers that had the ward members working together towards a common worthy goal. The bonds of friendship were strengthened between members at these functions.
- The time recuperated from attending endless, droning and dreary meetings is a huge blessing, I mean Donald Trump huuuuge
- I no longer feel guilty about drinking coffee and having mild barley beverages.
- I have time to study the drums.
- I have time to visit some of my family on weekends. They are about 1.5 hours away.
I have mixed feelings about not attending church. My beef is not with the humble members of my ward but with the leadership at the higher levels. I can't remember where I read this (I think in Isaiah) but the verse of scripture had Jehovah asking when He had commanded people not to attend the synagogue. In other words, why are you not at church? The problem is if I go back it would be at very short while before I would be interviewed by the Bishop about some of my "opinions" and I don't want to be bothered to attend a court of looooove.
Most of the members of my ward are brethrenites but there are a few "rebels" I keep in touch with every now and then.
I would love nothing better than to honour the Sabbath by worshipping God with people of like mind. I've changed and no longer fit in with the folk at church. It is what it is.

Re: What blessings have you seen since quitting church?
Well I haven't left, because I need to fellowship there. That is clear for now. And I teach still quite a lot, so I get to bring the Gospel to life for people. Real doctrine, as found in the scriptures, and make it relevant to life.
I pay fast offerings and only tithe what's left after helping others and caring for the family, which ends up being about a tenth of what it used to be.
Since I live abroad currently things are much different here on the local level. A lot of Utah culture doesn't reach us. So the burden is much lighter than what many of you experience.

Re: What blessings have you seen since quitting church?
I agree that we can still find value in church, we just need to filter it and measure it. I attend in order to take the sacrament, which I view as a very personal and private matter between me and the Lord. I also rather enjoy singing hymns of worship (although we need some fresh tunes), and any time someone is reading scripture and bearing true witness, we will be uplifted and edified.
However, I often leave after that meeting. Occasionally we stay for Sunday school as I am fond of the curriculum (NT), we have a good teacher, and we have some good discussions.
I avoid EQ like the plague. Too much prophet worship and just blind leading the blind in there. Too many "safe and effective", fully vaxxed boot lickers. It's awkward. If I HAVE to stay, you'll probably find me in my car.

Re: What blessings have you seen since quitting church?
Someone mentioned in one of the threads that the WoW was common knowledge during that time, but was treated as revelation in regards to Emma’s complaint about cleaning up after the men. Today we ONLY focus on coffee and tea (which are not spelled out), alcohol, and tobacco. Nothing else seems to matter!! We eat crap with the standard American diet (sad), eat way too much meat, and not enough fruits and veggies. So if I did leave (probably won’t due to family) I really don’t think much would change. Hopefully I would still follow the commandments, but I wouldn’t have an extra “play day” and start drinking coffee and alcohol. And it has nothing to do with the WoW. I’ve tasted coffee and it’s nasty!! Alcohol smells nasty and it’s too expensive. I would LOVE to not feel obligated to listen to conference talks!! I see right through them. But I point out the smallest thing and my husband jumps on my case. Last night he said it’s a commandment that we have a current temple recommend. I said it is NOT a commandment!! He actually (surprisingly) backed down and said but we’ve been commanded by our prophet to do so. I agreed with him so we could gently get off the topic. I try to plant seeds in a innocent way without him getting too upset. I don’t dare tell him what I think of our profits and what they have said. I believe he already thinks of me as an apostate.Mamabear wrote: ↑February 24th, 2023, 2:37 pmThey add zest.

Re: What blessings have you seen since quitting church?
I haven’t quit church, but I can imagine I would definitely be wealthier if I did.
I’ve had tastes of coffee, beer and wine. They all taste disgusting, so I will continue to abstain, except I would be willing to choke down some wine for the sacrament, and when Jesus comes again I’d be willing to choke some down for him too.

Have you ever tried Moscato? It’s one of the sweeter wines. Very delicious.

You’re so right! A temple recommend is not a commandment. It is a doctrine of man.OldGlory wrote: ↑February 25th, 2023, 11:27 amSomeone mentioned in one of the threads that the WoW was common knowledge during that time, but was treated as revelation in regards to Emma’s complaint about cleaning up after the men. Re: What blessings have you seen since quitting church?
I have a good friend who is in this same, uncomfortable middle ground -- no longer comfortable with the Church, but not sure what's next. Anyway, being the open-minded sort of guy that he is, he tried some wine, just for the fun of it. All he could say was "if that's what wine tastes like, there's not much chance of me ever becoming a wino." And I share those sentiments. Once I became more open-minded about a few things, I tried wine a few times too, and it has never done anything for me. Obviously it is an acquired taste, and not one I'm sure I will ever acquire. But, like WW, I would have no qualm with partaking for the right reasons, and on the right occasions. In fact, in that regard, I think wine might be quite appropriate, because I have found most I have tasted to quite bitter -- and that itself can be a similitude.
Otherwise, at this point, the single biggest reason I could see continuing to be "active" in Church and attending meetings, etc., would be for the fellowship. And I still attend on a hit and miss basis, mostly for my wife, who is still pretty TBM (which can be tough). But, as I have changed, etc., I have found that I don't really fit-in any more, or enjoy fellowshipping with most worldly, materialistic Brethrenites all that much. For that reason, I have taken to fellowshipping a lot more with Anabaptists (Amish & Mennonites, etc.), and I seem to derive a lot more satisfaction from that. Doctrinally, I can see they have their issues too, but I certainly find their fellowship and paradigms about family, community, and basic life in general, to be much more refreshing. But, part of that undoubtedly has to do with the fact that I'm not one of them, so I'm not subject to all the same expectations, which there's a good chance that I would find quite stifling. But the good thing is, they seem perfectly willing to accept me just as I am, without any demonstrable interest in attempting to proselyte or change me. If only Mormons could be more like that.

Re: What blessings have you seen since quitting church?
My thoughts after reading yours on this thread:
Sleeping. Without. Garments. (Daytime too)
Foxmamma, I read years ago that soap taken internally (administered by upset moms) was detrimental, so I used hot sauce. After a couple of tries with this, the kid grabbed the Tabasco and just glugged it down, laughing.
Re: Wine and coffee. There are many reasons why Utah is #1 or near that in depression, suicides and antidepressant use. I don't know, but a little wine and coffee can certainly perk up the day... Also, since I'm realizing how cult-like this corp is, I have taken these *radical* steps to distance myself from it. Dude, it specifically says, "...not by commandment or constraint..." And this kept us out of the temple?
We prayed to be led, including led to people with similar priorities and experiences. Lo and behold!
