New Palestine, OH, train derailment

I'm dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to technology, but I tried to do a search to see if anyone had mentioned this latest debacle in OH. I couldn't find anything.

Several days ago a train carrying I think around 20 cars with chemicals derailed. My brother lives 14 miles from there. Seems to sort of be a media blackout on a lot of the information. Doesn't look good; dead fish in waterways, dead or dying animals, huge environmental impact to come, etc.

Would love if folks would post more info here as they see it so I can try to keep my brother informed. He's not hearing much of anything where he is.

Today was the first I heard of this and that is no doubt intentional. Most news isn't really news at all. It's almost all propaganda. This should have made the front page and been on every news site.

Or it did happen and it is worse than Chernobyl and Exxon Valdez combined but the government is conspiring to keep it hidden?

But there is definitely, absolutely no connection to the China balloons, which may be aliens.

Ecological disasters like this is why the earth will need to be renewed. There was another train rerailment today. Get your emergency packs in order and have a place of refuge lined up.

On the railroad tracks in front of Fresh Mark, there is an instrument called a hot box detector, which scans the temperature of the passing train axles to ensure they are not overheated. If the device finds a problem, a defect detection alert sounds over the train radio.

Detecting a defect so hot that it would appear to be on fire would require the crew to stop the train immediately and inspect the problem, said Scott Wilcox, a retired Norfolk Southern engineer who worked on the Fort Wayne line, where trains travel between Chicago and the big railyard in the Beaver County town of Conway.

Hot box detectors are typically spaced every 10 to 20 miles apart, Mr. Wilcox said. On this particular track, the next detector after Salem was in East Palestine. The train would have passed that one less than a mile before derailing on Feb. 3.

If the train crew heard an alert shortly before braking, it is likely that the warning came from the detector in East Palestine.

All of which invites the question: Why do these rail barons hate paid leave so much? Why would a company have no problem handing out 24 percent raises, $1,000 bonuses, and caps on health-care premiums but draw the line on providing a benefit as standard and ubiquitous throughout modern industry as paid sick days?

The answer, in short, is “P.S.R.” — or precision-scheduled railroading.

P.S.R. is an operational strategy that aims to minimize the ratio between railroads’ operating costs and their revenues through various cost-cutting and (ostensibly) efficiency-increasing measures. The basic idea is to transport more freight using fewer workers and railcars.

One way to do this is to make trains longer: A single 100-car train requires less track space than two 50-car ones since you need to maintain some distance between the latter. More critically, one very long train requires fewer crew members to run than two medium ones.

Another way to get more with less is to streamline scheduling so that trains are running at full capacity as often as possible.

....this is what happens when you use the government to force people to do more with less (socialism).

As for my brother, who is 14-15 miles from this debacle, he is in HUD housing, going to kidney dialysis every other day, in a wheelchair since his leg was amputated over a year ago. (This poor guy has been through the ringer - I've taken to calling him Job. - some highlights from his last few years - MANY times in hospital, house burned to ground, wife died, lost leg, and on and on. I feel so bad for him. I've offered him to come to us, but he feels stuck.)

Lizzie, I'm a little confused... was that video showing the smoke plume at the 7:41 mark a real video or was it from that movie they made about a train derailment in Ohio? I don't want to mix fact with fiction - hard to do in today's climate.
