From these statements it appears that Joseph Smith revealed that our universe, or system, was 2.555 billion years old.

The quote says, “And that eternity [the one during which Christ’s doings have been known], agreeable to the records found in the catacombs of Egypt, has been going on in this system [not this world] almost two thousand five hundred and fifty-five millions of years”
It does not seem to corollate to the universe unless I am missing something.
Is that your interpretation? I see it is theirs.

The quote uses millions of years but at the end the writer of the linked page uses billions. My wondering mind would ask the question of whether the years are according to our reckoning or God's reckoning. To God, 1000 years of our time is only a single day.

doesn't seem like much basis here. Here say then Bruce R. I mean this starts with a Samuel Smith quote written by a historian, then a loose reference to some papyrus from Egypt w/o any specifics. Seems like hokey to me and doesn't match anything we know know or heard directly from any prophet. And the article (which I accept their overall premise) is very weak in substance. Another red herring IMO.

It seems that an eternity is actually 2.5 billion years.
So "from all eternity to all eternity" makes a little more sense.

I have little to say on this, not much in scripture is said on this subject in heading of o.p.. However much is said in the Pearl of G.P. and D&C as well as statements by early G.A.'s on the process, the nature of elements, spirits and final state of Father's organized worlds without end. Also that all spirit and matter will be organized and glorified to it's highest possible state. Throughout the Christian world only baby steps were being taken on these topics until the fullness was restored. Even to this day.
Some of the fundamental elements like the Lord's atonement, service makes good Christians, the Lord's example, and that there will be some kind of final judgement are fairly well understood by other Christians. Many other things are not.

My take on the phrase, "from all eternity to all eternity" is simply the going from the eternity before our mortality and continuing to that eternity after this mortality. Most non-LDS Christians believe that the phrase proves that God has always existed as God for an eternity past but I don't think that is what it is saying. We believe that Gods come to be and were not always God from an eternity past. So, I believe the phrase to imply that to men in mortality, they see God being God before this temporal existence in eternity and continues to be God during this mortality and afterward is God for the eternity to come.
