Raleigh, N.C. — A Raleigh police officer is credited with saving the life of a woman whose vehicle overturned in high water left by Tropical Storm Hanna early Sunday.

Felicia Louise Williams, of Raleigh, was driving south on Rock Quarry Road around 3:15 a.m. when she lost control of her 1994 Jeep at Jones Sausage Road. The Jeep struck a utility pole and continued on, striking another utility pole, according to the wreck report.

The second impact overturned the Jeep, and it came to rest, upside down in two feet of water. Williams was trapped inside.

Officer K.A. Thompson, 21, responded to the wreck.

"Realizing the danger, Thompson entered the water, broke a window and pulled the driver out and to safety," Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said.

"I was forced to break the drivers' side window to check the welfare of the driver," Thompson wrote in the wreck report. "I then extricated the driver from the vehicle to safety."

Williams sustained minor injuries. Sunday was Williams' 30th birthday.

Sughrue praised Thompson's "life-saving actions."

Thompson is assigned to the Raleigh police's field operations division.

Only meant for the 3rd:

Sorry, will. There is only place here and in our society for negative comments and destroying it's warriors. There is no room for news of warriors doing their job. They only look at the sins. It would not matter if it was a thousand to 1, and it is. They will only see the one. A foolish cowardly mob looking for perfection. They will never find it in us. I know you understand, but you are wasting your time with these.....creatures, in my opinion

What kind of society seeks the heads of it's bravest?

I don't think Will is trying to change the minds of cop haters... he's just offering the other side of the coin, which I think is great. Maybe we should make two threads, one called Good Cops and one called Bad Cops. Then the battle could continue without taking the whole news board.

I'm a full-time firefighter in a small city in southern New England (@ 65,000 people), and I have a lot of respect for the police officers we work with.

There have been many instances where the police in our city and surrounding towns have saved the lives of citizens, and especially children. There are so many good officers who are willing to sacrifice even their lives to help others, and many indeed who know a lot about what the government is doing and becoming.

The problem is though, that if a regime becomes more repressive, and if societal order continues to degrade, then it is the police who will become the primary enforcers of government policy.

Instead of merely enforcing criminal laws, and helping to ensure the safety of citizens, the police are being or will be used more and more to implement restrictive policies. The police are in a VERY difficult position, if they are constitutionalists, or if they are freedom-loving.

I think that police/FBI/etc... who love liberty, including LDS, will probably have to decide between conscience and job security a good while before most of the rest of us.
