The best anyone can do in any situation is stay close to the spirit and listen to what it is telling you. If you have been doing this, reading the scriptures and following the Prophets counsels you would have planned for and stored every needful thing including what to do in events that are about to unfold. As Mark says, dry runs are very helpful and as lundbaek says, plan plan and plan some more. bobhenstra has some very good comments also.

Good points, LLion.

I've been pondering what I would do, trying to think it through prayerfully. Right now I'm providing work for two fellows who needed it rather desperately they said, one had been praying for work... and happy to do it.

In the event of food shortages, I would certainly want to help the desperate, the hungry, as best I could, WHERE EVER I was at the time. I don't know where I'll be at THIS time, given that Lezlee and I have felt to set up places of refuge and "compacts" with friends. That's all I will say about that, but we have felt the hand of the Lord guiding and we trust He will guide us through the tribulations...

To share what we can seems the way to prepare to participate in the New Jerusalem, whether alive or passed over, or "quickened" (translated). I do see the Lord in charge, ultimately, at the same time granting us moral agency.

And remember... "GOD SHALL ALL HER TOWERS O'ERTHROW... " (referring to the whore Babylon).

After some thought, this is what I think I'll do and why:

Given the ratio of local law enforcement and military, I can't see viable logistics for corraling 300+million people. So martial law would have to be imposed with our consent - as in Katrina, we would have to believe it was for our own good.

With that as the underlying assumption, the first thing I would do would be to watch for the signs locally indicating that the implementation of martial law was imminent. It would be easiest to run and go into hiding before implementation.

Once martial law is implemented, choices are obviously much more limited. If a natural disaster were used as a trigger for martial law for instance, and you had no real warning (in my area, for example, you'd be a lunatic to go into hiding every time a hurricane was forecast) a measure of compliance would be smarter until the opportunity to flee presented itself. I believe food storage would be easier to hide than a weapon, especially a 3 month supply. I have considered, for example, opening the wall under our stairs to create a closet, the door to which would be hidden with the book shelf that is already on that wall now. Pretended compliance built the underground railroad and allowed colonial women to signal troop movements with drying linen. Jews were hidden and smuggled to safety by 'good' Germans even with the far-reaching eye and influence of Hitler. So compliance to some degree could be useful. HOWEVER...

If it came to being rounded up in FEMA camps, I believe we would have to fight but again history teaches that a forced gathering of this magnitude would be dependent on a measure of cooperation from those being rounded up. Bosnians separated themselves with a little peaceful encouragement from UN troops while Rwandans self-segregated out of fear and loathing, stirred up by evil tools. In both cases, however, genocide (pre-UN intervention in Bosnia) occurred in small doses and groups were herded to their deaths by deception rather than by overpowering numbers of government troops. These were small countries without the same resources we have in the U.S. Consider: We have illegals growing marijuana in our state parks and they are only caught when their crops grow sufficiently to be spotted via helicopter. That means they have been hiding there for an entire growing season undetected.

I guess what I'm saying is that only if caught completely unaware with absolutely no other means of strategem or escape, would I resort to arms.
