Happy Sunday. What’s your favorite hymn?

Mine is this:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ihJAJA4ibEs

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light

Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one

Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise
Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art

High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all
Amen

Eternal Father, Strong to Save

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bid'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
O hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea.

O Christ, Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy word,
Who walkedst on the foaming deep,
And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
O hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea.

Most Holy Spirit, Who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
And bid its angry tumult cease,
And give, for wild confusion, peace;
O hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

O Trinity of love and power,
Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe'er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

Amen.

There is an LDS version of the last stanza for those who feel they need such:

O Godhead of love and power,
Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe'er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

He Could Have Called Ten Thousand Angels.........................

They bound the hands of Jesus in the garden where He prayed;
They led Him thro’ the streets in shame.
They spat upon the Savior so pure and free from sin;
They said, “Crucify Him; He’s to blame.”

He could have called ten thousand angels
To destroy the world and set Him free.
He could have called ten thousand angels,
But He died alone, for you and me.

Upon His precious head they placed a crown of thorns;
They laughed and said, “Behold the King!”
They cursed Him and they struck Him and mocked His holy name
All alone He suffered everything.

He could have called ten thousand angels
To destroy the world and set Him free.
He could have called ten thousand angels,
But He died alone, for you and me.

When they nailed Him to the cross, His mother stood nearby,
He said, “Woman, behold thy son!”
He cried, “I thirst for water,” but they gave Him none to drink.
Then the sinful work of man was done.

He could have called ten thousand angels
To destroy the world and set Him free.
He could have called ten thousand angels,
But He died alone, for you and me.

To the howling mob He yielded; He did not for mercy cry.
The cross of shame He took alone.
And when He cried, “It’s finished,” and gave Himself to die;
Salvation’s wondrous plan was done.

He could have called ten thousand angels
To destroy the world and set Him free.
He could have called ten thousand angels,
But He died alone, for you and me.

All incredible hymns y'all have mentioned already.
This one is really good.
Come thou fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing thy grace
Streams of mercy never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
I'll praise the mount I'm fixed upon it
Mount of thy redeeming love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by thy help I come
And I hope by thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home

Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wondering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness like a fetter, bind my wandering heart to thee
Prone to wander Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above

I'm a lyrics loving kinda guy. When I come across lyrics that I feel deep in my soul, they really really burn in my bosom and I 'feel' them. The last couple lines of this one are like THE word for word prayer I carry in my heart for my Redeemer.

'Prone to wander Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, o take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above'

It still moves me every time I hear it.... I guess it's because I FEEL it. And boy do I feel it...

Know This, That Every Soul Is Free
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/mus ... e?lang=eng

1. Know this, that ev’ry soul is free
To choose his life and what he’ll be;
For this eternal truth is giv’n:
That God will force no man to heav’n.

2. He’ll call, persuade, direct aright,
And bless with wisdom, love, and light,
In nameless ways be good and kind,
But never force the human mind.

3. Freedom and reason make us men;
Take these away, what are we then?
Mere animals, and just as well
The beasts may think of heav’n or hell.

4. May we no more our pow’rs abuse,
But ways of truth and goodness choose;
Our God is pleased when we improve
His grace and seek his perfect love.

I could name a good few outside the hymnal, but my favourite LDS one is "The Morning Breaks", no. 1 in the hymnal. it is so full of hope and optimism, and so ultra-Mormon in the best way possible.

I have only heard it sung once in our ward and people were all over the place with it, probably because they don't know it. A bit of a vicious circle. This hymn should be far more loved than it is by the LDS. We sing a lot of dreary hymns. This one done properly is magnificent.
1. The morning breaks, the shadows flee;
Lo, Zion’s standard is unfurled!
The dawning of a brighter day,
The dawning of a brighter day
Majestic rises on the world.

2. The clouds of error disappear
Before the rays of truth divine;
The glory bursting from afar,
The glory bursting from afar
Wide o’er the nations soon will shine.

3. The Gentile fulness now comes in,
And Israel’s blessings are at hand.
Lo, Judah’s remnant, cleansed from sin,
Lo, Judah’s remnant, cleansed from sin,
Shall in their promised Canaan stand.

4. Jehovah speaks! Let earth give ear,
And Gentile nations turn and live.
His mighty arm is making bare,
His mighty arm is making bare
His cov’nant people to receive.

5. —Angels from heav’n and truth from earth
Have met, and both have record borne;
Thus Zion’s light is bursting forth,
Thus Zion’s light is bursting forth
To bring her ransomed children home.

Amazing Grace...and Give Said the Little Stream (because I loved primary).

"Despite becoming blind at six weeks of age, due to a medical malpractice, Fanny Crosby went on to write over 8,000 hymns and was one of the most prolific hymnists in history. Born, Frances Jane Van Alstyne Crosby, in 1820, she was also known as the “Queen of Gospel Song Writers,” and the “Mother of Modern Congregation Singing in America.” She wrote so many hymns that she had to use over 200 different pseudonyms in her career because publishers were reluctant to have too many hymns by one person in their hymnbooks.

Regarding her blindness she said, “It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me."

Besides writing hymns she was also known for public speaking, secular poetry, and political and patriotic songwriting. While enrolled at the New York Institution for the Blind she learned to play the piano, organ, guitar and harp. Despite her musical training she only wrote the lyrics to most of her songs. The composer of the music for “”Give” Said the Little Stream" was William Bradbury with whom she collaborated with on other occasions as well."

Gratitude - not in the LDS hymnal, yet.

Lyrics to Gratitude

All my words fall short
I got nothing new
How could I express
All my gratitude?

I could sing these songs
As I often do
But every song must end
And You never do

So I throw up my hands
And praise You again and again
'Cause all that I have is a hallelujah
Hallelujah

And I know it's not much
But I've nothing else fit for a King
Except for a heart singing hallelujah
Hallelujah

I've got one response
I've got just one move
With my arm stretched wide
I will worship You

So I throw up my hands
And praise You again and again
'Cause all that I have is a hallelujah
Hallelujah

And I know it's not much
But I've nothing else fit for a King
Except for a heart singing hallelujah
Hallelujah

So come on, my soul
Oh, don't you get shy on me
Lift up your song
'Cause you've got a lion inside of those lungs
Get up and praise the Lord

Oh come on, my soul
Oh, don't you get shy on me
Lift up your song
'Cause you've got a lion inside of those lungs
Get up and praise the Lord

Come on, my soul
Oh, don't you get shy on me
Lift up your song
'Cause you've got a lion inside of those lungs
Get up and praise the Lord, hey
Praise the Lord
Praise the Lord
Praise the Lord

So I throw up my hands
Praise You again and again
'Cause all that I have is a hallelujah
Hallelujah

And I know it's not much
But I've nothing else fit for a King
Except for a heart singing hallelujah
Hallelujah

Abide with me Tis eventide...Kathryn Gowans version. This is beautiful, although I do love the Tabernacle Choir version too...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R62p3IYwSxo

Abide with me; 'tis eventide
The day is past and gone;
The shadows of the evening fall;
The night is coming on

Abide with me; 'tis eventide
Thy walk today with me
Has made my heart within me burn
As I communed with thee

Within my heart a welcome guest
Within my home abide

[Chorus]
O Savior, stay this night with me;
Behold, 'tis eventide
O Savior, stay this night with me;
Behold, 'tis eventide

Abide with me; 'tis eventide
And lone will be the night
If I cannot commune with thee
Nor find in thee my light
The darkness of the world, I fear
Would in my home abide

Chorus (repeat last 2 lines)

We sang All Glory Laude and Honor yesterday. I like it.

It made me think how selfish and proud we are. I enjoyed the testimonies but couldnt help notice how often me, mine, and I were used. Made me consider my own thoughts...am I out of balance and could I express praise and gratitude more often?

Unlike Guide me O Thou Great Jehovah (which many of you know), and some other Welsh hymns, this one does not translate well into English. It is about offering up a pure heart (the Calon Lân of the title) to God.
I was in Wales back in October and heard a male voice choir singing hymns in a village hall as I walked by. It made me very happy.

The MoTab or whatever it is called these days, has some Welsh roots, but barely acknowledges them.
