Respected for their discipline, honor and ability to face the most intense situations in the name of liberty, the U.S. military knows a thing or two about surviving combat. These are some of our favorite quotes from our armed forces.

“Engage your brain before you engage your weapon.”

– General James Mattis

“If I always appear prepared, it is because before entering an undertaking, I have meditated long and have foreseen what might occur. It is not genius where reveals to me suddenly and secretly what I should do in circumstances unexpected by others; it is thought and preparation.”

– Napoléon Bonaparte

“If you find yourself in a fair fight – you didn’t plan your mission properly.”

– David Hackworth

“Wars begin when you will, but they do not end when you please.”

– Niccolò Machiavelli

“No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy.”

– Helmuth von Moltke

– Napoléon Bonaparte

“The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.”

– William Arthur Ward

“The belief in the possibility of a short decisive war appears to be one of the most ancient and dangerous of human illusions.”

– Robert Lynd

“Both optimists and pessimists contribute to society. The optimist invents the aeroplane, the pessimist the parachute.”

– George Bernard Shaw

“Optimists study English; pessimists study Chinese; and realists learn to use a Kalashnikov.”

– Russian Proverb

“If an injury has to be done to a man it should be so severe that his vengeance need not be feared.”

– Niccolò Machiavelli

“That city is well-fortified which has a wall of men instead of brick.”

– Lycurgus

“To be prepared against surprise is to be trained. To be prepared for surprise is to be educated.”

– James Carse

“Battles really are the wildfires of history, out of which the survivors float like embers and then land to burn far beyond the original conflagration. To teach us those important lessons we must go back through the past to see precisely how such calamities affected now lost worlds—and yet still influence us today.”

– Victor Davis Hanson

“In my opinion, the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised.”

– General George S. Patton

“I am sometimes a fox and sometimes a lion. The whole secret of government lies in knowing when to be the one or the other.”

Buffy Sainte-Marie had a unique point of view when it came to war and soldiers. She wrote a song in the 60s, Universal Soldier, that was covered and made into a hit by Donovan. She laid blame on the soldiers for prostituting themselves to evil governments. It's an interesting point of view and you may enjoy the attached links. The first one is a young Buffy talking about her experience that led to the writing of the song, followed by a live performance. The second link is to a live performance of the song by Donovan.

"We are prepared to accept death on the battlefield. When you return back to the states and a fellow soldier is murdered in front of you.... There is no preparations, no training, and no way to control the rage." ~ My Son U.S. Army (CBRN for Infantry Scout unit)

That was the message of The Deer Hunter, one of my favorite movies. "Give me a war and I'll fight it." Funny how she'd lay more blame at the soldiers' feet than those of the evil government's officials.

I've never seen The Deer Hunter and will have to watch it someday. Thanks for the reminder.

As for the song, I've wondered the same thing. I have friends who are in the military and for them, it's the whole family, kids included who are in the military. These are not people who love the uniform or like to play with guns. Their motivation is purely love of country and tradition. Their hearts are in the right place. I thought of joining the military in my mid-20s when they were recruiting people with electronics backgrounds. The money was good and early retirement seemed appealing. My wife would not hear of it and it was the right decision for me not to join. I've developed quite a disdain for government and authority types and I have a big mouth. It would have ended poorly :-)

{A Psalm of David.} Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:

2My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me.

3LORD, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him!

4Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.

5Bow thy heavens, O LORD, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke.

6Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them.

7Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children;

8Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.

9I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee.

10It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword.

11Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:

12That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:

13That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:

14That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets.

15Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

Same here. I admire veterans' poise and wisdom, but I just couldn't bring myself to share their former employer. I would still fight for my country, which has sadly become quite a different thing for fighting for its government.
