Nobody knows how this thing with Russia is going to play out, but...
I would encourage everyone to follow their gut/instinct/spirit and prepare for whatever you think is likely to happen. Everyone has a different opinion and prediction/expectation about how this issue between Ukraine and Russia is going to play out. Nobody knows for sure. Plenty of people in denial that anything was going to happen. And plenty of people in fear that everything is going to happen.
It's possible that things escalate but then back off. But I saw videos a few days ago of Ukrainians saying that life is going on as normal and that the US was just making up the threat from Russia. Now I see long lines of cars of Ukrainians trying to leave the country and Russia has in fact invaded. When it happens, it happens quick. And it may not seem like it's going to happen, until it happens. And then there's no time.
What I would expect is that if Western countries decide to take any action against Russia, it would start with sanctions (already done), and if that doesn't work, then provide materiel to Ukraine and covert assistance. If that doesn't work, I would expect some kinetic involvement that Putin would decry as evidence to why he has to control the neighboring countries to fend off US threat. Ukraine used to have nukes but gave them up in an agreement with NATO that NATO would help protect them from and attack. If NATO does help, or if a NATO country (like Poland) gets attacked by Russia, then we have the same situation as WWI.
Two major powers fighting each other hasn't happened in a decades, so no one know what it would be like. But the US and Russia both have high tech military equipment that can't be replaced so easily. $4 billon fighter jets take awhile to build, and rely on a functioning global market for materials. Once the high tech equipment is gone, a country can be very vulnerable. As part of legitimate warfare, production facilities would likely be targeted including the power grid. Before nukes are used, we can expect attacks on infrastructure, especially power, either by cyberattack and surgical attack. Either way, when a modern country doesn't have power, they aren't going to be effective at fighting back.
Knocking out the power would not only stop the US from being effective in fighting, but it would cause chaos in society. You don't need boots on the ground, helicopters, or even cruise missiles to take out power grids. For many of them, you can do it with a cyber attack. If the US gets involved in this Ukraine-Russia conflict, we can expect the power grid to be at risk. No power means no heat, no communication, no working gas pumps, no water in many places. Some thing have battery backups and generators like cell towers, but they will run out within a few days. It easy to imagine the chaos that can cause. And add to this no communication. No news. No internet to look up what's going on. No social media. No calling loved ones to find out how they are. No information about what is really going on. No info on what is happening in Washington, if we are being attacked, or if we are attacking, or anything. It will be people at grocery stores or courthouses meeting in person to exchange what they "heard" but no one will know for sure.
So if you feel so inclined, get your food storage and other preps finalized. And consider getting some radios both to stay in contact with people in your community, but also to send and receive information to places outside your community. It will be a huge advantage if you can communicate and get news of what's going on. You also might want to print off those pictures now, and print or otherwise get some maps. Fix that generator. Get some gas. Whatever else you need for a long term power outage.
For completeness, you might want to have the book called Nuclear War Survival Skills which in electronic form is here: https://seasonedcitizenprepper.com/wp-c ... skills.pdf (print it or at least read it and gain some knowledge).
If things escalate (no one knows), and if things go wrong, there will be plenty of voices that say nothing is going to happen...until it does and then it's too late.

An EMP can also accomplish the same result as cyber attacks and the damage is lasting. Defense Intelligence committee established several years ago just how vulnerable we are to an EMP attack.

You can get gas or diesel from a station that has no power. You just need a pump and someone to stand guard.

Do we know if Russia is more likely to use an EMP or a Cyber Attack as a means of taking down the grid?blitzinstripes wrote: โFebruary 24th, 2022, 8:58 am An EMP can also accomplish the same result as cyber attacks and the damage is lasting. I was listening to a guy yesterday and he made it sound likely that Russia could strike back rather quickly.

Google nuke map 2. It allows you to simulate nuke explosions. You can choose the weapon size and country of origin and choose your target on a map.
I live inside the primary radius of a high priority target (depending on the enemies objectives) so Im not worried about stealing gas.

Re: Nobody knows how this thing with Russia is going to play out, but...
We have made some basic adjustments to our lives...
All vehicles are filled when they drop below 3/4 of a tank. We can always siphon gas from one vehicle into gas cans for a road trip. Or the fuel can be used in generators.
We keep gas cans full and rotate the fuel into the trucks on a regular basis.
We never leave the house without a 72 hour bag for each of us. This also means that we never leave the house without personal protection.
We have printed maps, with notes written in, that cover a good portion of land within 175 miles of us.
We have used our camping gear and storage food regularly so that we are comfortable in setting up on the fly.
*side note* I know people who have wheat stored but have no way to grind it. They also have never cooked or baked with whole wheat. They are going to be in for an interesting transition.

bandaids for survival, will get you a few days, weeks or a month, then what? There will be no place safe for long if things go really to hell. Without food we will be like NO was in days. People will reach out, it may take them a few weeks but they'll be everywhere and those all alone in the outback will be just that, all alone, sitting ducks, easy prey. There is no win in hiding, but maybe a few weeks. Not that it is wrong, but it doesn't play out like those survivalists say, never does. Some how need a tribe, strong enough to be defensible, smart enough to be self sufficient, and I don't count on Zion at this time, nor do I have an answer, if god doesn't provide one to each of us, we're just screwed like the ANL and those burned before Jesus' birth and the Jews eating their children under siege, or Mormon and Moroni's families, or Ether and his family (all dead) or all in the day of Noah but 8......................................................... I wonder if the alleged buried kingdom of Tartariaโs potential connection to ancient Russia has anything role in these modern events

If there's a nuclear war everyone in the US and Europe and Russia will die either from fallout or nuclear winter. No amount of canned tomatoes or stored gasoline is gonna change that.
Where did the idea we can survive a nuclear holocaust originate? Back in the day everyone knew it was a death sentence for humanity.
Our best hope is this confrontation is as phony as the pandemic. A limited 'war' with tacit agreement between parties in order to bring us the Great Reset by another route.
Klaus Schwab and his pals operate Putin, Xi, Johnson, Trudeau and probably most of the political class. We could be watching a big movie, like Sarah says.
Of course even that could get out of hand I guess.

You have to survive long enough until you can band with like-minded people. Don't get me wrong - I DO prepare. There's all kinds of scenarios where having food, fuel etc will be needful. I'm just aware nuclear war ain't one of 'em. We'll all just be heat shadows on the walls of our houses if that ever happens - and so will our canning jarsMomma J wrote: โFebruary 25th, 2022, 10:00 am... The book I posted a link to talks some about the chance of surviving a nuclear war. There are lots of factors, but if you aren't killed in the blast or in the first few days, you've actually got a decent chance if you can take precautions. A lot of people might day of cancer over time, but some people will be lucky and not get that much radiation.NeveR wrote: โFebruary 25th, 2022, 9:01 am If there's a nuclear war everyone in the US and Europe and Russia will die either from fallout or nuclear winter. But nuclear bombs are only one concern. Before that stage would be the "lights out" scenario which I think is much more likely.

Very good thoughts trucker....I've been thinking the same....recently I've been able to develop some bug out plans as an extended family member just got a bug out place in Idaho. It's basically vacant land with a well and a spring. We had a planning meeting on what needs to be done to sustain our large extended family on this property. We all have several years of food storage, many tons of wheat and a way to mill it...plus lotsa of other preps....we have already prepositioned some food storage and other preps near the land and are making plans for on going sustainablility there....the biggest concerns seem to be hygiene and protection....we drew up plans for an off grid gravity fed bath house and fencing the parameter to start...after that if we have time we will work on other structures......keep your gas and diesel tanks topped off and be ready to get out of dodge in a minute if you have to. Living in the midst of utopia on the west coast, I'll have to be one step ahead or we won't get out to the bug out spot....some things we thought about were energy, food production, protection, hygiene, work distribution, skills of family members and how that would work to sustain us in the worst case scenario....we brainstormed for several hours as a group last Sunday and I think we could probably make a go of it....if needed....but you never know how things will play out....being prepared is better than the alternative..imho

How are plastic sheets and duct tape going to protect us from that amount of radiation? The ground water would be activated, as would the dirt. I just don't see it.

Re: Nobody knows how this thing with Russia is going to play out, but...
I don't think this is necessarily true. It all depends on how many warheads are launched and the targets. The USSR used to have ~30,000 strategic nuclear warheads and ~20,000 tactical nuclear bombs. The United States had plenty, too. If all of those launched then, yes, life is over. However, if one can believe the official numbers our arsenals are about 10 percent of our high points (is a little more complicated than that, but that's a good ball park), and neither country's strategic plans call for ever using even a large fraction of them. So, I don't think it is wise to ever to think we are doomed, even if we see bright flashes and mushroom clouds. Even the radiation normally gets down to a livable level within two weeks, as long as neutron bombs aren't used. My Dad lived in Utah and Nevada in the wind path of hundreds of nuclear bomb tests until he left on his mission and although he got carcinomas decades later, he's 82 and still alive.NeveR wrote: โFebruary 25th, 2022, 9:01 am If there's a nuclear war everyone in the US and Europe and Russia will die either from fallout or nuclear winter.
