George Lucas on joy vs pleasure

Post by BuriedTartaria »

I find moral and spiritual truths in the Star Wars mythology, just as many others do. I think George is a wise person and he never deserved the backlash he received by Star Wars fans. That corporate checklist soulless blockbuster Disney Star Wars trilogy really woke people up to how much better Star Wars was under its creator (Mandalorian has been a sincere step in a better direction though), so I'm grateful more SW fans are realizing the beauty and soul George gave Star Wars .

I stumbled on this video of George discussing joy vs pleasure and found it uplifting and thought I'd share it.

"Pleasure is purely self-centered. It's all about your pleasure. It's a selfish, self-centered emotion that is created by a self-centered motive of greed. Joy is compassion. Joy is giving yourself to somebody else, or something else..... if you get hung up on pleasure, you're doomed. If you pursue Joy, you will find everlasting happiness."

Celebrity deaths generally don't really touch me much (I am a 90s kid though, so Bob Saget passing in his mid 60s hurt), but I'm going to feel sadness when Lucas passes.

My main problem with Star Wars is that Lucas prostituted his art from the beginning... nothing could be too cute or not to be turned into a money making enterprise. I think this detracts from the message... i'm in the fence regarding it. I think some people equate the forcw with the Priesthood but it seems to owe as much to New Age thinking and the occultic side of Taoism.

Funny enough Star Wars wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for Dune. George Lucas was strongly inspired by the Dune saga, and some people claim that Star Wars was a complete rip-off of Dune.

There are certainly a lot of similarities between Star Wars and Dune. I personally think that George Lucas was strongly inspired by Dune, and interlaced this throughout the Star Wars Universe.

Here's an interesting article that goes into further detail:

I think Lucas was more inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom series. Words taken directly from those books and used in the SW universes. Notably Jedi vs Jeddak/Jed. Many other similarities.

I also love the original Star Wars and find many truths in it. But let’s not kid ourselves, these truths are also filled with lies. Stick to the scripture for real Godly truth.

Big time. The other major influence is Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress", which is where R2D2 and C3PO get their characters from.

Alia/Leia (near angram) and Paul/Luke (New Testament writers) are obvious examples.

The Dune series has much more original and thought provoking things to say about spirituality than Star Wars ever did.

Jedi is more likely from Jidaigeiki, what Japanese call period dramas about Samurai. Darth Vader is modelled on the old Samurai armour.

Lucas also took from sword and sorcery, westerns, Joseph Campbell, and films about the European Middle Ages.
