Unusal Prep for General Conference
I have a close friend in my ward who has heard first hand from certain police and emergency officials in SLC that the Church and city have spent up around $3 million for crowd control and riot gear for the up coming conference. Not only that, they have had training sessions to use the equipment even tear gas. My friend asked why this is going on and his contact said the Brethren are concerned that there will be an estimated 100k gay protesters that will try to infiltrate the conference and that there are actually some members that have assisted up to 3k of these protesters to gain access to tickets to get into the sessions of conference. Have any on this forum heard any of this or have any corroborating info?

I would not doubt it. I think the special meeting with Pres Packer may have something to do with what is getting ready to happen. I would not be surprised if they were going to try t disrupt the dedication of the Draper temple.

Re: Unusal Prep for General Conference
There was something posted akin to this a few weeks ago, so if nothing else, it's a rumor that's going around. I wouldn't be surprised if it is true, at least to some degree. About protesters getting into conference, I could see that also. 2 or 3 years ago, my husband and I attended some sort of event at the Conference Center where Pres. Hinckley was speaking. I can't remember the occasion. In any case, right as Pres. Hinckley got up to speak, a woman, who was sitting pretty close to front and center, got out of her seat and starting running toward and yelling at the prophet, something about Joseph Smith. It was hard to decipher her rant. Church security had it under control in less than 10 seconds and Pres. Hinckley stood calmly and silently at the pulpit until she was apprehended and taken out. He didn't even acknowledge it had happened. It ended up being a non-issue, but it was really interesting to witness, and I am sure we'll see some of that in the future. Very scary.

You can bet that the protesters will be counting on that! Its not the 100k perverts descending on SLC thats the problem. Its the international media coverage that goes with it.

I worked a church security detail for President Hinckley one time in Arizona. They are well prepared for this type of interruption and each person is willing to give his life for those who are there. If something does happen, it will be quelled rapidly.

I have not heard of anything about this through work, though it would not surprise me if SLCPD did some extra riot training just in case. The only riot training I received was what we all had prior to the Olympics. We all trained on the same tactics and they are pretty basic, so if something happened, I could easily show up and join into a riot control unit without any problems. Like I said, it was pretty basic and I still remember it. If there was a fear of 200,000 protestors, I am confident I would hear about it at work and I have not.

I don't know what to believe after reading both post but I would not put it past the gay community to attempt disruption during a GC to attract attention.mirkwood wrote:I have not heard of anything about this through work, though it would not surprise me if SLCPD did some extra riot training just in case. Re: Unusal Prep for General Conference
Our agency went through riot control training right after 9/11 for three days. I do not think it cost 3mil though and our agency was a lot larger that SLCPD. I think this is just a rumor. We might see some protests, but if the gay community were preparing such a large gathering, it would be known to the general public. How could such a thing be organized without the public knowledge. It would be on internet sites, etc..

If this rumor is not true, it is a good example of how easy it is to perpetuate a falsehood across the world using the internet.

If there were 100k homos descending on SLC, they would likely have to have a lot of hotel rooms booked. Does anyone here work in the hotel industry?

Re: Unusal Prep for General Conference
It doesn't surprise me, even the bit about other LDS members helping them get entrance. All I can say is that if it's true "Woe Woe is them" and that goes double for the members that are allegedly helping.
