I think it's the logical extension of what Jesus says in the D&C. He says we must heed the apostles and prophets and "his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth." Do we worry that Jesus will lead us astray? If we receive the words of the prophets as if from Jesus's own mouth, do we consider them the same way?

They do not always speak for God. It is contrary to Christ’s doctrine to teach that we will “never” be lead astray by following a man. Many things the leaders teach today contradict Christ and I feel a witness of the Spirit confirming what I see.

The church has been pro-vax for decades, and people have largely been okay with vaccines, but once vaccines became politically relevant, people are suddenly super sure they know that God is anti-vax. It's pretty convenient that God seems to take the same positions on political issues that believers do, at exactly the moment they do.

But that's a completely different issue. If they aren't prophets, then obviously you're off the hook. But if they are prophets, then they are correct to say that we are commanded to heed them.

During this conference I have seen an interesting contradiction, I mentioned this in the conference thread but would like to have a more specific discussion. They keep telling us that we need to follow the HG and "let God prevail, but then Rasband reiterated the idea that Nelson cannot lead us astray. This is a consistent theme I've noticed in the church's teachings, that we must follow the Spirit but the prophet can "never lead us astray"...

My question:

Why do we need to follow the Spirit if we will "never" be lead astray by RMN?

Seriously. What purpose is there in praying to know if we should follow someone if they can "never" go astray???

A second way we learn obedience is by following the counsel of living prophets and other appointed Church leaders. Exactly. Is there a place in the scriptures where it says that a prophet can never lead people astray? No! In fact there are several places where it warns that they can lead us astray. Imagine Nephi or Moroni marching around stating such falsehoods! They would have never spoken such blasphemy.
When people say that the prophet can never lead us astray, it is false doctrine because there is no true doctrine to support it!

Does this count as astray? Perhaps mere hyperbole?

During this conference I have seen an interesting contradiction, I mentioned this in the conference thread but would like to have a more specific discussion. They keep telling us that we need to follow the HG and "let God prevail, but then Rasband reiterated the idea that Nelson cannot lead us astray. This is a consistent theme I've noticed in the church's teachings, that we must follow the Spirit but the prophet can "never lead us astray"...

My question:

Why do we need to follow the Spirit if we will "never" be lead astray by RMN?

President Lee recently said in a most moving address to the Brigham Young University student body: “The measure of your true conviction is whether or not you see the power of God resting on the leaders of this Church and that testimony goes down into your heart like fire.” May these words of his have a deep impact on all, but especially on you—our youth.

God knows all things, the end from the beginning, and no man becomes president of the church of Jesus Christ by accident, or remains there by chance, or is called home by happenstance.

How beautifully and completely Paul encompassed all that would enable us to gain the greatest happiness in this life and exaltation in the life to come! Paul proclaimed the truth boldly and frankly just as our beloved prophet Spencer W. Kimball does today. If we follow our prophet’s counsel and that given by the apostle Paul we cannot go astray.

A second way we learn obedience is by following the counsel of living prophets and other appointed Church leaders. We are fortunate to live in a time when a living prophet is on the earth to counsel and guide us. It ensures that the best wisdom and experience is focused on an issue before the deep, unassailable impressions of revealed direction are received. It guards against the foibles of man.

The source for this quote from Joseph is the “Young Woman’s Journal”, Dec. 1906 (also requoted in June 1994). When has the Lord told his people to follow the majority rather than the Spirit?

The Lord has given some marvelous guarantees without any disclaimers. And this is one of them: He will choose the prophet, and He will never let that man lead us astray. Imagine for a moment the impact of that promise. There is at least one place we can turn for pure, unpolluted guidance.

They let us know what we should be doing. The prophet can help us know how to successfully meet the challenges we face and how to be happy and feel peaceful. Exactly. Is there a place in the scriptures where it says that a prophet can never lead people astray? No! In fact there are several places where it warns that they can lead us astray. Imagine Nephi or Moroni marching around stating such falsehoods! They would have never spoken such blasphemy.
When people say that the prophet can never lead us astray, it is false doctrine because there is no true doctrine to support it!

I just read Rasband’s talk, and wow. This thread title was way more appropriate than I thought.

His message literally says that following the president of the church is more important than following the Lord.

Yesterday we had a combined Sac Mtg for two wards because the SP was moving the boundaries (why a whole sac mtg was necessary for this, I will never know). First speaker was a member of the SP telling us that this decision came from the SP who holds the keys and we must obey, the thinking was done.

The second talk was by our bishop who went on to remind us of the First Vision story and how we can know the truth if we pray and get our own revelation.

Gobbledygook. "Of course you can get your own revelation, but it better never contradict what we tell you!"

We then had a sustaining vote on the boundary change (one person objected). I thought it funny that we would go through all this simply for a routine change like this, but there was never a sustaining vote to shut our churches down, require masks, or social distancing. They only want us to vote when they know the outcome would be in their favor.

And it is telling where the hearts of the members are. A full blown crisis of faith if they have to leave their beloved calling and social circle for a boundary change, but no problem suffocating children in masks. They strain at gnats while swallowing camels.
