Portable fire/waterproof safes.

Post by hedgehog »

Been redoing my documents/metals safe this week thought I’d share some ideas.

*I prefer simple key. Batteries are sometimes replaced on inside and can leave you locked out when they die. A lost key can be solved with a drill with minimal damage to internals.

* Not all fireproof safes are waterproof. Nowadays you can get one that is both for same price.

* I find. .33 cu foot safe too limited even for sheets of paper. I like the .6 sizes much better.

*Cant grab a heavy metal safe in an emergency.

Here is a solid brand name safe. Right now 59$.

Inside the safe, I would recommend a second water/fireproof document bag. 16$

Please add any other tips or suggestions. Saints together strong.

You focused mostly on safes, or should we share some other security ideas?
Here are some things to consider about safes:

If you are protecting against normal, but motivated thieves, consider this:

So if you’re serious about security, be ready to pay up in time and money.
There are many people in this world who love to break into things, and destroy things.
Here’s a very useful video about general security,

Does anyone in here want me to start a general security thread?
I feel like there could be a lot to talk about.

If you want a safe, go Sturdy

The safes are completely customizable. If you are worried about security the #1 rule is more metal buys time-that's it. Any safe can be busted if someone has enough time and tools. But you can anchor the safe, put it in a location (surrounded by 3 walls), load it down (i.e. have it weight a literal ton with what's inside it) where it becomes very, very, very difficult to get to. Not impossible but really hard.

For fireproofing; best best is put it in a location that will receive minimal direct fire, but they have a great selection of material for fire proofing + they have a safe within a safe you can get for important documents.

If you can anything decent size from them, you "may" be able to get the driver of the truck to stick it in your house; otherwise be prepared with a sturdy pallet jack/tractor and several guys. They have a great video on how to move very heavy safes with a few people.

Highly recommend; 10x better than the crap you find at a big box store, which is just trash.

Here is a tiny one.
