The best thing they could do is sell the whole lot and give the proceeds to those in need.

PLEASE NOTE: I live in the area. The Tooele temple site was voted down by community (high LDS population) referendum because the Church Building Department wanted to build a suburban cookie cutter subdivision with tract housing (condos, single family homes, etc) around the temple in an area of rural horse farms and five acre minimum lot sizes. The community wanted to retain it's present culture, nature and purposes. IT HAD NOTHING TO DO (((THE COMMUNITY WANTED THE TEMPLE - NOT THE SUB-DIVISION))). WITH A TEMPLE BEING BUILT. It was all about the Church FORCING a different life-style on a somewhat rural community.

The Temple would have been built across the road from a Drive-In Theater - a community land mark. Probably would have put the Drive-In out of business due to the night lighting of the temple. The Church was not being a "Good Global Citizen.".

The Church choose a building site about 2 miles away from the community of Erda site on the edge of Tooele City proper in an area where existing recent tract cookie cutter housing was already constructed on the south side of the building site and room for more tract housing on the east, west and north. The site is now a few blocks west a Home Depot with no other current housing construction between the Home Depot and the Temple. Both structures will be in eye-sight of each other. Smart (?) choice.

Interestingly the Church changed the name of the proposed temple from The Tooele Valley Temple (which was not in City of Tooele) to The Deseret Peaks Temple (which is now in the City of Tooele). Seems like cultural retaliation and Sower Grapes to me.

In my opinion the Church was looking to build the subdivision in order to sell the new housing to recover the cost of building the temple itself.

Unrighteous dominion.

SNIP ...

Denver temple took forever to build bacuse of objections by the local citizens.

Toole didn't want a temple either. Most citizens in towns and cities don't want even a lds church house built.
This is my personal experience, not opinion or speculation.

Too bad you guys don't realize that our leaders face more trials from this world than you do in regards to decisions to build. and, personally, they get as much trials in this world as you. God does not let the prophets be exempt from the trials and hate thrown at them. sometimes this hate from a coimmunity has been caused by the local LDS
