Military lands aircraft on closed Michigan highway in test of agility
"This is believed to be the first time in history that modern Air Force aircraft have intentionally landed on a civilian roadway on U.S. soil."
They're practicing the operation of
ground-attack war planes within the borders of the U.S. Whatever could they be planning?

Back in the day when serving in the Army, I was stationed in South Korea. That was the first time I learned that the straight sections of larger highways were built as auxiliary runways, meaning there were no light or power poles nearby, the center median was paved thru level, and any guard rail on the sides were low.
The pavement was also thicker and seldom was there any kind of undercrossing or culvert.
They were straight and even, but not necessarily level, and even when in the mountainous regions, had decent approach and departure routes.

This kind of training has been taking place since before the second world war. During the second world war entire stretches of roads were utilized as runways for shipping and supply routes.
This is not a secret conspiracy. This is literally something that has been done by air forces all over the world for a very very long time
In fact aircraft like the Saab darken and euro fighter were designed to be able to utilize roads and civilian traffic routes for emergency operations
In fact when I was in commercial flight school one of the things we discussed was how to identify roads for the purpose of emergency landing. You have to have some concept on how to operate off of paved surfaces in aviation. This includes public roads if necessary.
Add to this, the number of military operations that actually take place at small community airports, right down here by the Ohio River we routinely have ospreys and other aircraft and operate from our community airport because it serves as a good training location.
So don’t blow this out of proportion. If we are going to have a military that is going to be prepared for the possibilities, you have to bear in mind that those pilots need to be able to operate out of a number of different environments and potential locations

The interstate highway system was designed with this sort of use in mind.

exactly what would an A-10 do on a freeway? reload fuel? bombs? Oxygen? change pilots? Takes about 100 people to keep one in the air and lots of logistics, not like planes in WWII

In aviation there is a sort of rule that if your plane is in trouble the best thing to is to land it keeping both you and the plane in one piece.
Interstate highways were designed and built with this in mind. And while it nice to be able to drive around the country at 75 mph we should remember that was not why those roads were built.

And yet, "This is believed to be the first time in history that modern Air Force aircraft have intentionally landed on a civilian roadway on U.S. soil."
It could be nothing. But it fits in so well with all the recent language from the top – that the American founding stock is now the country's greatest terror threat – that it does make me wonder.

So is this really true or is the journalist incompetent? I know nothing about US Air Forces, but in other countries these kinds of practices are held regularly.

The key phase here is modern planes.

I wouldn’t pay attention too much about the military. I think it’s just flexing to other countries (China,Russia). I’m more interested in Israel-Iran. Seems they’re really close to breakpoint.

We forget that this was practice of a takeoff. Not an emergency landing.
When was the last time a ground attack plane practiced a takeoff with a civilian road?

Not the first time by a long stretch. I was an ABDR engineer (aircraft battle damage repair) in the Air Force and we used to do these drills with A-10 every now and then. We would have to stage our gear, fueling systems, weapons (inert of course) and practice repairs, reloading and refueling on closed sections of public road. No big deal.

My cousin had to land his plane on a highway because the oil meter went to zero. O.o
But he's not military, but I thought I'd share.
