Driving in to work today I saw this at the ward building. I wish they could do this for Veterans Day, Memorial Day or even the 4th of July.

What is Juneteenth?
June 19, a day celebrated as the day all black Americans were finally free. It was just made a federal holiday this week. Many people in America have never heard of it. The East Idaho News reporter who has led the reporting on the Daybell case said he just heard about it for the first time last year. His whole life revolves around the news, so that is an example of how it wasn’t really a thing until recently, except in black communities.

Well that's looking on the bright side. I guess things could always be worse.

From what I understand, it specifically references the slaves held in Texas who were the last slaves in the US to hear about the emancipation proclamation.
The federal government sent troops into Texas to demand that the slaves held there be set free

I enjoy the show "Blackish" and it did an episode several years back on it.
Also, Root Tech has several episodes on their YouTube channel about it.

This is an important holiday...in Texas.
Texas was the only state in which the Union never really held any land during the duration of the Civil War. In fact, the last battle of the Civil War was actually a Confederate victory in Palmito Ranch roughly two months after Appomattox.

Those look like boy scout fundraiser flags. The boys are paid to post these flags in people's yards on federal holidays.
So it's likely that they literally can't do this on Veteran's day, Memorial Day, etc. because those flags are all over the neighborhood. And assuming they add Juneteenth to the list, they won't be able to do this next year either.

So 'covid' won't be around for the 'Juneteenth' celebrations, and it will go dormant for the Gay Pride parade, etc. - but it will ravage the community if they celebrate Independence Day?? What an interesting virus!

City that approved reparations program holds Juneteenth, Gay Pride celebrations — but canceled July 4 parade
CHRIS ENLOE
June 19, 2021
Evanston, Illinois, the Chicago-suburb that made history this year by officially approving a reparations program, held a public Juneteenth celebration Saturday — but has canceled its July Fourth celebration.
Evanston commemorated the abolition of slavery with a parade and community celebration on Juneteenth — June 19, the day on which the abolition of slavery is annually celebrated — complete with art, music, and food at a local park.
There will also be a Gay Pride parade next Saturday, June 26.
The city, however, has canceled its July 4th live celebration over COVID-19, and has not indicated that it will hold similar festivities to honor America's birthday.

I'm not against "Juneteenth" in theory. But I know it's not going to be a day to remember all the (mostly white) men who died in the American Civil War to end slavery and reunite the nation. I also feel like it's probably going to end up as a replacement to July 4th.

Abolition of slavery is a great thing to be celebrated. It is worth remembering since modern political leaders are actively seeking to thrust us back into it.

I'm curious when the 'abolition of slavery' days are celebrated in all the other countries across the world that have had slaves - like England, for example. Does the UK have an equivalent to "Juneteenth"? And what about CHINA, a country which at this very moment STILL has slaves. Why doesn't anyone ever talk about that? Why isn't that on the news and social media 24/7? Why isn't the LDS Church giving $9 million to free THEM?? Is there still slavery in parts of Africa? What about sex-trafficking - is that not slavery in the worst possible way? And it's going on in higher numbers and in more places than any other type of slavery - and we rarely hear a peep about it.
So let's face it. There really is only ONE slavery that matters in today's "enlightened" world - and that is the slavery of black people by a minute number of people (some of whom were black themselves) in early American history. And while ALL slavery, of every type, should be abolished immediately, "Juneteenth" is nothing but virtue signaling, and the Left's effort at removing Independence Day = July 4th - which they will succeed in doing as long as people are blind to what is really going on in the U.S. They have already succeeded in doing that in Evanston, IL. My .02.

Brazil would not abolish slavery until 1888 with the Lei Aurea.
On the 20th of November they have what is called Black Awareness Day that shows the contributions of black Africans to Brazilian culture. What is little known is that Brazil took in a much higher number of slaves than the United States ever did; one half of the slave trade's slaves went to Brazil, and only about one eighth to the United States.
Mexico from day one of independence had no slavery, so slaves in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, instead of going north, would actually flee south because Mexico considered any person that reached their territory as free men.

Emancipation Day
From the link - "Emancipation Day is observed in many former European colonies in the Caribbean and areas of the United States on various dates to commemorate the emancipation of slaves of African descent."
Guess that isn't enough, so we have to have TWO days to celebrate the end of a tiny portion of the slavery that has gone on in the world. Cool. Still wondering when all the people ecstatic about Juneteenth becoming a new national holiday are going to fight for CURRENT slaves to be emancipated.

I have no problem with Juneteenth. It's a great opportunity to remind people who exactly kept blacks as slaves, and who emancipated them.

Meh, whatever. I'm rather underwhelmed after what's happened with the violence in the communities and the reverse racism in critical race theory junk. To be honest, I"m sick and tired of the lot of them and wish there was a day we could celebrate when we shipped them all back.

You're in luck, as both John W. Woolley and Lorin C. Woolley said it would happen...
