EAT THE WEEDS

There is a man out of Florida called "Green Deane". He has a website called "Eat the Weeds". Through articles...and a multitude of videos...he seeks to help us "gullible gulls" recognize and use the food that is all around us. While many of the plants he identifies are indigenous to his area...many can be found across the US...so they will be recognisable to us on the West Coast. Here he talks about the classic dandelion. Here is sow thistle that is so common in the Sacramento Valley.
This was in today's Prepare Now newsletter. If you go to eattheweeds.com, you can find some pretty fun stuff. His videos on YouTube are pretty informative, too.

I had a roommate at BYU who had this book about edible plants. Whenever she was running low on cash, she would go hiking and come back with all kinds of interesting "food". Usually, I felt sorry for her and shared my Ramen

The earth was created to be plentiful. Conspiring men have trained us to believe the only place to get food is at the grocery store. If it ain't in a can or in a bag it must not be edible.

The weeds are likely more nutritious than ramen, ,might even taste better. Did you offer to swap ramen for any weed?

This is certainly true. At least in my area, there is Purslane and Mallow everywhere. I usually pulled them up as weeds in my garden before i really understood the true nutritional benefits. Here is the wikipedia purslane entry:
Purslane contains more Omega-3 fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid in particular[4]) than any other leafy vegetable plant. Simopoulos states that Purslane has .01 mg/g of EPA. This is an extraordinary amount of EPA for land based vegetable sources. EPA is an Omega-3 fatty acid normally found mostly in fish, some algae and flax seeds. [5] It also contains vitamins (mainly vitamin A, vitamin C, and some vitamin B and carotenoids), as well as dietary minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, potassium and iron. Also present are two types of betalain alkaloid pigments, the reddish betacyanins (visible in the coloration of the stems) and the yellow betaxanthins (noticeable in the flowers and in the slight yellowish cast of the leaves). Both of these pigment types are potent antioxidants and have been found to have antimutagenic properties in laboratory studies.[6]
100 grams of fresh purslane leaves (about 1 cup) contain 300 to 400 mg of alpha-linolenic acid. One cup of cooked leaves contains 90 mg of calcium, 561 mg of potassium, and more than 2,000 IUs of vitamin A.
and of course the common mallow - I snack on the "cheese wheel" seeds while gardening. They have a great nutty flavor and never ever run out no matter how hard you try to eradicate them:
Malva neglecta is also known as Common mallow in the United States and also buttonweed, cheeseplant, cheeseweed, dwarf mallow and roundleaf mallow.[2] Although often considered a weed, this plant is reportedly consumed as a food.[3] This is especially true of the seeds, which contain 21% protein and 15.2% fat.
This guy
http://apaetoday.blogspot.com/2007/06/l ... ragus.html also from utah, has found wild growing asparugus, sounds good to me, ecspecially when target is selling it for $4 a bunch.
Wonder what else the wild suburbs of utah have to offer? Anyone else?

There's so much out there that is edible, and good tasting. There's also things that are edible and do not taste good. But something in the stomach can prevent a lot of hungar pain. Real hungar pain can make a lot of things taste good. And if you haven't experienced serious hungar pain, your in for a real treat!
Especially if it's your kids experiencing that pain----
Spend some serious time on the subject, get some books, DO SOMETHING!

I just think you would be a better mother if you were sweet all the time.

Who said I was a mother? Maybe I have another personality that thinks she's a mother. I hope she really isn't a mother or there is a child being neglected right now
And I'm always sweet. Always have been too. Any misinterpretation of me not being sweet is the fault of you

Yep, I'm a Gothic women, at least most of me/us are. I even tattooed my lips black to match my clothes. I have a chain connected to my nose that attaches to my right ear. It's awesome 8)
Not sure what this has to do with weeds??

You said you had sons so I assumed that you were a mother judging from some of the other feminine posts you have had.

When is the last time you had a post that was actually about the topic? Don't go She-Ra one me or anything.

Why does every thread on this forum degrade into this sort of thing?

I brought a bowl of miner's lettuce to a family gathering this weekend. One relative was intrigued and excited...until she found out that I had picked it up in a field by a park! Then her face became grimaced and she said "Why did you have to say that!" Then she put back all but a piece or two...which I am unsure if she ever ate.
Tick is right...mallows are worth trying. All mallows are edible...and they are all over North America.

I'm just curious because I'm going to shoot a fluffy bunny and eat it for dinner tonight. I'm looking to find a good weed to garnish it with but I don't want it to be poisonous.

I have always wanted to try a segolily bulb. Are they any good? 8)

Yes they are, quite good. They cover a hill not far from my home. However there's also another bulb there called the death camas, I'm told it's also very good--- but I wouldn't know. The plants are similar but the flowers are different.
It's a good Idea to know what you or your kids are eating before hunger pains throw caution to the wind. Parts of the "Showy Milkweed" is edible "if" the white latex sap is boiled out, you have to bring the small seed pods and earlier flower pods to a boil three times, with fresh water each time. Taste like fresh peas! But you had better be able to recognize it from other types of milkweed, otherwise your going to be very ill.
Worth the effort? When you hungry you'll know!
