Man Cannot be an angent unto himself if he is not Self-reliant. Herein we see that independence and self-reliance are critical keys to our spiritual growth.

Got it. Read it. Ran right out and restocked my short-term (3 mo.) storage. :D

I thought the question of "sharing" that you posted was addressed well in the articles (p.65 There is an interdependence...;p.64 The key to making self-reliance spiritual...; p.51 As people become self-reliant... )

I also noticed the paragraph that declared food storage was not a doomsday program but it was designed to help us here and now (p.65 One of the threee areas...) as we or our neighbors face financial difficulties.

It was fascinating to see so many of the topics that have been discussed here on the forum come out in this Ensign and I loved the repeated emphasis on the idea that self-reliance is a means to the end of service. (p.65 Can we see...) And that self-reliance is inextricably linked to freedom! (p.64 Doctrine and Covenants 29:34-35...)

I understand how important it is to assist others, The only problem I have is that many use this as a crutch or an excuse not to prepare when they could have.

There is a lot of great stuff in this Ensign.
Also see pg 62 Gullible gulls, This explains how for years sea Gulls depended on a Hand out from the srimp boats and after the boats left, the Gulls nolonger knew how to fish and now that the boats are gone they are starving to death, It talks about Welfare, I found it interesting to say the least.

Loved that story, Will!! It really speaks to the damning nature of the welfare state. I loved the reference to programs that help without teaching others to help themselves...

I wasn't suggesting anything personal, by the way, when I referenced the 'to share or not to share' post. I took this Ensign as evidence that we are not alone in many of our concerns and I found it comforting to read in about many of the very topics we've all been discussing and thinking about.

Ah I feel left out, my subscription is up this month, will have to wait til they publish it online. I see posts mentioning food storage. I was told Sunday that the church has exceeded it's fast offering funds and feeding members with tithing for the first time in a while. But unemployment is only at 7.5% right?

Can this be true? Then those of us who can, must increase our fast offerings and other offerings.

The financial trials are certainly going to affect each and every one of us.

In a way, it's exciting to see the prophecies coming rapidly now. But it's very scary, too. I wish I was better prepared. As hard as we have worked at it, we still have much to do.

I haven't heard that but in January on Fast Sunday our Bishop asked us all to increase our fast offerings.

Actually, I believe our bishop did mention something to that effect, also, but didn't make a big statement about it. (Maybe I wasn't as in tune as I need to be..... )

kathy,
From the tone of the talks in the Ensign, I get the feeling that we are all going to get the chance to live consecration to some extent. My impression is that we are going to be asked to simplify, live frugally and to donate more. We may not be asked to donate everything - but for those who aren't ready to live the law, being asked to give up anything during hard times will be just as difficult.

MercynGrace: I am actually relieved to have things this far along. That may sound a little odd, but I've been anticipating some of these things for some time and I am ready for the show to begin (almost...still have a few more tasks to do.)

My Ensign didn't come today, either. I am anxious for it to come so I can read everything. I live in the Salt Lake Valley. Are we the last to get ours? Sniff, sniff.

I found it very interesting that tucked in there among the articles on self-reliance and food storage was an article about helping your family prepare for General Conference.

Of course, it's the March issue so it's only natural to have that kind of article this time of year... still I couldn't help but wonder if these topics are tied together and we are going see another 'raising of the bar' this time in regards to our temporal affairs and charitable giving.

Then again, I tend to overthink things... so who knows.

Joseph .....you really made me laugh!!!! I really needed that!

I was just reading more post on how we are NOT to share our food storage....blah blah blah....then I read this! It was very timely.....not sharing and wanting our own toy we should have learned as a toddler!

I really enjoy your posts!
