Conference on the Hebrew nature of the Book of Mormon

Post by Jalden »

On May 21st-22nd (Friday-Saturday) of 2021 the Zarahemla Foundation is going to be hosting the second annual Restoration Torah Conference in Lehi, Utah. The theme of this conference is "The Torah and Other Hebraisms in the Book of Mormon".
The purpose of this conference is to educate the saints about the often forgotten Hebrew roots of their faith and to encourage a greater appreciation, and application, of the principles found in the Hebrew Scriptures.

We are accepting submissions of presentations for this conference. The plan is for each session of the conference to be an hour and 15 minutes (55 minutes to talk, 10 minutes for Q&A, and a 10 minute break between sessions).

We expect you may have many useful and insightful things to share with us. If you would indulge us by speaking, you should submit your conference talk (or talks) to this email address, restorationtorahconference@gmail.com, by the first week in May so that all the talks can be printed and compiled in a book for the conference attendees. Any questions you may have should also be directed to this email.

This conference is being held in conjunction with the Feast of Shavuot (aka Pentecost), which, as you may know, is when the Law and Covenant with Israel was given at Sinai. What better way to celebrate than to dedicate the time to teaching and learning about God’s Word?

All branches of the restoration are welcome, and encouraged, to attend and speak. Despite differences that may exist, the focus of the talks ought to be on what we could or should be doing in our personal lives, families, and communities to understand and keep God’s Law, come closer to him, and to teach and help others to do the same.

For the sake of planning, please respond with your intentions at your earliest convenience.

Also known as the Feast of Weeks. It is also the day the Apostles received the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:1-4 (NKJV)
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and [one] sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

I'll be attending at least part of the Friday meeting in person. I attended last year, there were some good speakers.

I was interested to discover that the Book of Mormon identified their New Year with the old pre-exhilic ecclesiastical New Year taking place in the month/spring season of Aviv, or the current month of Nisan, not the Rosh Hoshanah New Year currently used described as "the head of the year").

See: 3 Nephi 8:5: "And it came to pass in the thirty and fourth year, in the first month, on the fourth day of the month, there arose a great storm, such an one as never had been known in all the land."

And of course this coincides with the crucifixion of Jesus.

Anyway, to me, this seems like a good Hebraic hit for the Book of Mormon. I would be interested in seeing a good treatment of the calendrical system used in the Book of Mormon, and how it fits their description of the seasons.
