And confusion, too.

Satan is the author, but certain things must be contended.

He’s also the author of false doctrine and false traditions. Preaching against these things will invariably lead to contention among those unwilling to part with them. That’s why true prophets are killed, stoned, and cast out.

Truth cuts and divides. If avoiding contention is the main goal, then truth may be difficult to come by. Notwithstanding, we must seek to be peacekeepers and not assume we possess the truth when we likely only possess a small fraction of it.

Yes! And that contention is coming in all kinds of forms, including passively aggressively shaming those who defend constitutional rights.

The goal by those pulling the puppet strings, is to stir up as much contention as possible - so we waste our energy & relationships (strength) on the wrong battles & are then less successful in battling the real battle: psychological warfare, which historically has preceded worse.

“The principal object of our directorate consists in this: to debilitate the public mind by criticism; to lead it away from serious reflections calculated to arouse resistance; to distract the forces of the mind towards a sham fight of empty eloquence. In all ages the peoples of the world, equally with individuals, have accepted words for deeds, for they are content with a show and rarely pause to note, in the public arena, whether promises are followed by performance. Therefore, we shall establish show institutions…
[Protocols #5 reiterated in Protocol #10]

”In order to put public opinion into our hands we must bring it into a state of bewilderment by giving expression from all sides to so many contradictory opinions and for such length of time as will suffice to make the [average person] lose their heads in the labyrinth and come to see that the best thing is to have no opinion of any kind, in matters political.” [Protocol #5]

Well, one way or the other, we need to keep the Spirit with us, study & think for ourselves so we are not deceived - so we can see clearly & love God & others as well as ourselves best.

Follow and worship only God - nobody else.

No wonder Brigham Young is so hated on this forum and elsewhere

Yes.

"Who do you follow?" If I have feelings of contention, it kind of shows who I follow.

I think OCDMOM is talking about contention in this way:
Dictionary
con·ten·tion
/kənˈten(t)SH(ə)n/
noun
1.
heated disagreement.
My perception of the heated disagreements I have seen is that one or all parties are angry, and sometimes even full of hate. The devil is obviously the one being followed when one's heart is contentious/angry.

Yes. And the ones killing the prophets are following Satan.

One of the main problems of online discussions is that one cannot see another's body language, facial expressions, or tones of voice. Also, if someone is having an intense discussion, it isn't necessarily contention-neither is calling out false teachings for what they are - though name-calling and such is obviously contention (and I've seen a lot of that on this board, as well as what appears to me to be only passionate discussion).

True, if you add a tone.

Well in this case I do have serious concerns about Brigham Young... and Luke happens to hold Brigham in VERY high regard...

But I’m also pretty sure he was giving me a friendly taunt, and I responded, in kind, with a friendly tongue-sticking-out emoji while telling him to take a hike... oh the power of emojis haha...
