Places of safety?
I know the Church's cattle ranch, Deseret Livestock, up around Morgan County, Utah is HUGE. I believe it covers an area of approximately 30 x 30 MILES.
Big enough for a gathering? Yeah, I think so too. Winters would be B R U T A L !
You would really want to be prepared for the cold.
The Church owns lots of ground around Cedar City, Utah.
Where would you go?
Morgan = Brutal Cold
Cedar City = Very Cold, Very Hot, Much closer proximity to Las Vegas, L.A. ect...

We are told to "stand in holy places". I believe this is our only safety. This includes our homes, our churches, our temples, but especially our own bodies. There may be a time when we are told to flee. Until then, I will prepare my home the best I can and then place my faith in my Heavenly Father.

There will be a time when we are told to flee, Any man who will not take up his sword will have to flee to zion for safety.

I think we have enough evidences from dreams, Isaiah, 19th century prophets and apostles to suggest that the Mountain west in general would be a place of refuge. The desert is a place of refuge and I think it has more to fulfill in its status of refuge before this is all over. I think that in general (and in 1940 terms) that places of refuge are in our own homes wherever we are, and that will always be true, but there probably will be a time in the near future where we will have to physically gather for protection. Unless the Holy Ghost puts a protection around each of our homes from looters, rioters, and storm troopers, I don't know how we will be protected - and maybe that's the case - but it seems like the Lord would want us to be more practical and gather to help each other and protect each other. I think we have faith and wait upon the brethren and these places will be made known.

Ether 2: 7-15
7 And the Lord would not suffer that they should stop beyond the sea in the wilderness, but he would that they should come forth even unto the land of promise, which was choice above all other lands, which the Lord God had preserved for a righteous people.
8 And he had sworn in his wrath unto the brother of Jared, that whoso should possess this land of promise, from that time henceforth and forever, should serve him, the true and only God, or they should be swept off when the fulness of his wrath should come upon them.
9 And now, we can behold the decrees of God concerning this land, that it is a land of promise; and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall serve God, or they shall be swept off when the fulness of his wrath shall come upon them. And the fulness of his wrath cometh upon them when they are ripened in iniquity.
10 For behold, this is a land which is choice above all other lands; wherefore he that doth possess it shall serve God or shall be swept off; for it is the everlasting decree of God. And it is not until the fulness of iniquity among the children of the land, that they are swept off.
11 And this cometh unto you, O ye Gentiles, [/u]that ye may know the decrees of God—that ye may repent, and not continue in your iniquities until the fulness come, that ye may not bring down the fulness of the wrath of God upon you as the inhabitants of the land have hitherto done.
12 Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ, who hath been manifested by the things which we have written.
2 Ne. 1: 5-9, 20
5 But, said he, notwithstanding our afflictions, we have obtained a land of promise, a land which is choice above all other lands; a land which the Lord God hath covenanted with me should be a land for the inheritance of my seed. Yea, the Lord hath covenanted this land unto me, and to my children forever, and also all those who should be led out of other countries by the hand of the Lord.
6 Wherefore, I, Lehi, prophesy according to the workings of the Spirit which is in me, that there shall none come into this land save they shall be brought by the hand of the Lord.
7 Wherefore, this land is consecrated unto him whom he shall bring. And if it so be that they shall serve him according to the commandments which he hath given, it shall be a land of liberty unto them; wherefore, they shall never be brought down into captivity; if so, it shall be because of iniquity; for if iniquity shall abound cursed shall be the land for their sakes, but unto the righteous it shall be blessed forever.
8 And behold, it is wisdom that this land should be kept as yet from the knowledge of other nations; for behold, many nations would overrun the land, that there would be no place for an inheritance.
9 Wherefore, I, Lehi, have obtained a promise, that inasmuch as those whom the Lord God shall bring out of the land of Jerusalem shall keep his commandments, they shall prosper upon the face of this land; and they shall be kept from all other nations, that they may possess this land unto themselves. And if it so be that they shall keep his commandments they shall be blessed upon the face of this land, and there shall be none to molest them, nor to take away the land of their inheritance; and they shall dwell safely forever.
• • •
20 And he hath said that: Inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land; but inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall be cut off from my presence.
D&C 10: 49-51
49 Now, this is not all—their faith in their prayers was that this gospel should be made known also, if it were possible that other nations should possess this land;
50 And thus they did leave a blessing upon this land in their prayers, that whosoever should believe in this gospel in this land might have eternal life;
51 Yea, that it might be free unto all of whatsoever nation, kindred, tongue, or people they may be.
D&C 38: 18-20
18 And I hold forth and deign to give unto you greater riches, even a land of promise, a land flowing with milk and honey, upon which there shall be no curse when the Lord cometh;
19 And I will give it unto you for the land of your inheritance, if you seek it with all your hearts.
20 And this shall be my covenant with you, ye shall have it for the land of your inheritance, and for the inheritance of your children forever, while the earth shall stand, and ye shall possess it again in eternity, no more to pass away.
Ether 13: 2, 8
2 For behold, they rejected all the words of Ether; for he truly told them of all things, from the beginning of man; and that after the waters had receded from off the face of this bland it became a choice land above all other lands, a chosen land of the Lord; wherefore the Lord would have that all men should serve him who dwell upon the face thereof;
• • •
8 Wherefore, the remnant of the house of Joseph shall be built upon this land; and it shall be a land of their inheritance; and they shall build up a holy city unto the Lord, like unto the Jerusalem of old; and they shall no more be confounded, until the end come when the earth shall pass away.
D&C 97: 19, 21, 25
19 And the nations of the earth shall honor her, and shall say: Surely Zion is the city of our God, and surely Zion cannot fall, neither be moved out of her place, for God is there, and the hand of the Lord is there;
• • •
21 Therefore, verily, thus saith the Lord, let Zion rejoice, for this is Zion—THE PURE IN HEART; therefore, let Zion rejoice, while all the wicked shall mourn.
• • •
25 Nevertheless, Zion shall escape if she observe to do all things whatsoever I have commanded her.
D&C 63: 34.
34 And the saints also shall hardly cescape; nevertheless, I, the Lord, am with them, and will come down in heaven from the presence of my Father and consume the wicked with unquenchable fire.
JS-M 1: 20.
20 And except those days should be shortened, there should none of their flesh be saved; but for the elect’s sake, according to the covenant, those days shall be shortened.

Brigham Young said”…It will be Christian against Christian, and man against man, and those who will not take up their sword against their neighbor must flee to Zion. We are blessed in these Mountains; this is the best place on earth for the Latter day Saints. Search for the history of all nations and every geographical position on the face of the earth, and you cannot find another situation so well adapted for the Saints as are these mountains. Here is the place in which the Lord designed to hide His people…It has been designed, for many generations, to hide up the Saints in the last days, until the indignation of the Almighty be over. His wrath will be poured out upon the nations of the earth.” Deseret News, Vol.11, No 9, May 1, 1861.
Orson Pratt, Wilford Woodruff, and others echoed Pres Young’s statements. See “Prophecy-Key to the Future” by Duane S. Crowther pages 58-62.
What Brigham Young said is true. Look at a geographical map of Idaho, Utah, and Eastern Nevada. You will see how God prepared this area and how it was “designed to hide His people”. You have the Rockies in the East and North, The Grand Canyon on the South, the Nevada desert on the West. In between you have fertile valleys.
I did a little internet search and found that Utah has a wide variety of food and manufacturing available. There’s; Natural gas, oil, and coal. There are almost 4,000 manufacturing firms producing everything from guns, furniture, machine shops, etc. There are steel and oil refineries and sawmills.
There is a great deal of food production too. In 2004 Utah produced; 3.44 million bushels of barley, 696,000 bushels of wheat, and 624,000 bushels of oats. You will also find; corn, fruits, vegetables, dairy, cattle, mutton/wool, and poultry. This production could increase with more man power and a great need.

I, too believe that initially Utah is a good place to be in these last days. We will have to band together but I believe it will be natural for us to set up defenses in our wards and stakes. I don't think I'll have any hand in going back to build up New Jerusalem because of my age and responsibilities here. If I were younger and very fit I'd love to be called to go.
I do think we'll see our share of violence and bloodshed here in the SL Valley, but I also believe it won't be anything compared to what will happen in other places.
