Re: Help me buy my first gun
I recommend starting basic and small, then working up from there. Here's an idea as to where to begin.

Re: Help me buy my first gun
Not sure about the scarcity of 223 rounds; i picked up 500 each of 223 and 556 today from Sportco. They said they just had a pallet ship and it will be gone within a week. I guess that's scarce but it's still around. I finally found an AR-15 today too. And now 3 other people are finally calling me back. Maybe they're not as hard to get as I thought yet...i'm gonna go ahead and pick up another lower just in case.

Federal FMJ 55gr. About .40/round. Having never purchased it before I'm told that's higher than usual but about avg price around here right now (when you can find it). It just takes timing on shipments to catch the stuff. I'm sure the manufacturers are working overtime to pump it out.

Re: Help me buy my first gun
Good price and federal is good. You are not on a 3 to 6 month waiting list are you? It is hard to get stuff shipped now. You got to watch those guys they will tell you they have it in stock, but they lie. Sometimes they keep putting you off.

Re: Help me buy my first gun
Cool. It is hit and miss to. If you are diligent and call places up to see if they have it in stock then that is the best way. I just go to wal-mart for .223 now. You did it right.no waiting list, i just called them this morning and then walked in.
I was put on a waiting list for some 7.62x39 till april. They emailed me back and said it would in june. I canceled my order.
People are in a panic. It may be more available in a couple months, but that is what I said a couple months ago. It has gotten worse.
I went to wal-mart. No 9mm, no 10mm, no .357, 3 boxes of .44, 4 boxes of .45, 6 boxes of 30/30, 20 boxes of .223. Plenty of 12 gauge, .22, and 30/06. Anyway the stock is way low.
If you can get federal for 40 a round then get as much as you can afford.

Re: Help me buy my first gun
Old Man Dalton’s 2 cents:
12 ga shotgun
Advantages;
Inexpensive.
Intimidates your opponents.
Ammunition is plentiful.
May be used to hunt small game for food.
Has lots of knock down power. (opponent does not get back up)
Short range but great for urban areas and forests.
May target multiple targets at longer ranges if they are close.
Great weapon for suppression fire. (It will keep their heads down)
Slugs; good for vehicles, long range shots, and when accuracy is important.
Improvised slugs: Take any shell with bird shot, pry it open, pour out the shot. While replacing the shot add melted wax. Make sure all the pellets return, then close shell back up. This creates the equivalent of a Glazer safety round for your shot gun. The majority of the pellets stay together instead of spread and their energy is transferred to the target. Less likely to over penetrate the walls of your home and hit a family member. When they hit they spread out inside the target doing lots of damage.
Disadvantages;
Not as accurate as a rifle or carbine.
Ineffective at longer ranges.
Strong kick. Not a good weapon for young kids and smaller statured people.
Smaller number of rounds held in the weapon. This may be overcome with after market extended magazines and drums.
My philosophy is that an urban patrol that will be needed during the coming anarchy should have several types of weapons. The 12 ga shotgun will be an integral part of this mix especially in an urban area. In an urban setting I would have at least a third with shotguns, less in a rural area.

Re: Help me buy my first gun
I kind of like knives for close up if you get your muscle memory down. I could train a girl scout to be formative whith the right knife. I recommend a quik draw Hissatsu type of knife. It really has only one use, but the Japs know what they are talking about with this sort of blade....Promise.
Don't forget about the knives.

Re: Help me buy my first gun
Seriously, pick up a good knife. Our ancesters used knives more than any other tool (maybe hacking tools aswell). It is natural. Don't feel silly. Very little training is needed for a knife (genetic memory?). Infact, most knife training is How to disarm someone with a knife. Knives are feared. Most everyone is natural with a knife, or even axe/sword. Besides the fact that most people use them all the time.

Re: Help me buy my first gun
I like my K-BAR. I have cut everything from small trees to com wire (though the com wire really dulls the blade!). It even works as a hacking tool. It is really a great weapon/tool. When I bought mine, it was only ~$30, so they are not terribly expensive. I like the parkarized blade. It sharpens well and holds an edge fairly well. They have been tried in every climate and place where the Marines have fought.Blip wrote:Seriously, pick up a good knife. Re: Help me buy my first gun
I do too. Got a couple myself. From the sounds of it I have not used them nearly as much as you, but I hear the same thing from anyone that knows anything about knives. Got one in a bug out. It is a bit of an over kill for a Marine though, huh? I thought they just needed some bailing wire and a toothpick.I like my K-BAR.

Re: Help me buy my first gun
I agree having a KA-Bar or something equivalent is a necessity. The knife for home or on the road protection is not my first choice. Go get yourself a tire checker club from a real Truck Stop. A Club or Sword would be better for you average joe/jane. If you don't know how to use a knife, an assailant who does would make quick work of you. The former Military people are in good shape. They have some training and some have actual knife fighting experiences that they should share. A club however would provide better range for a inexperienced knife handler.M249Gunner wrote:I like my K-BAR. SOG is good, we now have two in the house. The last knife you'll ever buy. (sort of)Gman007 wrote:Knives rock! See Cold Steel's demo of knife vs .357
KaBar is ok. Benchmade, Cold Steel, SOG, Masters of Defense, Columbia River and others are even better.

.22 rifle, Ruger 10-22.
.22 pistol (uses same ammo.)
I hear a lot of people who buy the powerful guns like AK-47, but I think a barrage of .22 from a semi auto can do as much damage and the ammo cost a lot less. Besides, what are you going to use it for? Hunting? The poor deer will be extinct within a few weeks of a major crisis. Personal protection will be the primary use. I have witnessed two people gunned down by a .22 pistol and sadly they both died. I think a .22 will be the most useful gun to you.

I like 22, but it won't go through body armor or knock any one fitted for such.Emmanuel Goldstein wrote:.22 rifle, Ruger 10-22.

Re: Help me buy my first gun
I am not to worried about body armor. I think if you feel you will need to take on armor then practice your aim. The neck and face are very fragile.Blip wrote:I like 22, but it won't go through body armor or knock any one fitted for such.Emmanuel Goldstein wrote:.22 rifle, Ruger 10-22.

Re: Help me buy my first gun
You will be lucky to hit general area of the body in a rush situation. Most people don't have the training for percision under pressure. That is where your AK and shotgun type of weapons come in.
