Yesterday was Black Monday in my department. 15% were laid off. Apparently they will be making re-evaluations quarter-by-quarter, thus in 3 months, if things do not improve in the auto industry, more will be cut.

Re: unemployment
I went through that process twice. No fun. 3rd wave in both instances. Companies cut to the bone and then dig into the marrow. Then no more company.
What hurt most? After months of turning employees and customers into a close-knit team, we were tossed. So much for "customer first". The hurt was in being labeled as not being a team player as told to possible employers by the manager who said he would help me get a new job. Sharks and barracudas come in all shapes and sizes. I turned him over to God to deal with. I hate being lied about and lied to.
Looks like I get to go through it again. As of March 2, 2009, I have been given "2 weeks notice" to find another job. The expected funds and loans have not appeared for Pure Energy Systems Network, so if things do not improve in the next two weeks, I'm gone or I may continue "pro bono".
My resume location. I am also on LinkedIn.

You certainly know how to make someone feel better!Gman007 wrote:Bet it happens quicker. The velocity of the drawback is historical.Yesterday was Black Monday in my department. 15% were laid off. I certainly agree on the second statement. GM is fighting for survival. I have serious doubts that they and Chrysler are going to stay out of bankruptcy for very long.
As for quicker, what helps my company is they're diversified. They're less dependent on the Big 3 or even OEM sales than many other parts suppliers. Pondering it, I and my wife feel we have 3-6 months, personally. I certainly agree everything's accelerating. I will certainly use the time to continue to gather supplies.
I'm trying to avoid self-fulfilling prophecy, but I don't see any way that I'll still have a job by the end of the year. Each layoff will have a bigger and bigger net.

Re: unemployment
I knew who's team I was on. But the last manager had bought a house from a team of Mormons and he took his frustration out on me, once he remembered on who's team I was with. ROFLOL!
Like I said, he is in the hands of God now to do as He sees fit. But yeah, when a former manager tells prospective employers that you are not a team player, that essentially closes the door on most well-paying jobs and sounds a death knell to any hiring opportunities.

How come I get the impression that one of the ways we can get out of this is to live the Law Of Consecration?

Re: unemployment
I had a great example of that today.... We were behind in our bills, due to job troubles...our water got shut off. They should have gotten the check it was mailed….but did not. What fun that is! We did not want use our water storage up, we are just using it for drinking..We went out and shoveled snow and brought it in and put it in the tub. This way we can still use toilets. I get the snow, melt in a pot and then put in the toilets.will wrote:How come I get the impression that one of the ways we can get out of this is to live the Law Of Consecration?
One of our LDS neighbor kids saw this odd behavior of shoveling snow and taking in into our house and asked why. They were told the reason. Shortly after that our door bell rang and in our LDS neighbor offering to bring water over in one of those big jugs you use at parties. And offered their home for continued supply of water including, showers…etc… What sweethearts!!!!
It really was refreshing to see the love and empathy and people going out of their way for another. I think our check got lost in the mail, just to show us this. Nice little prep to figure out how to do things without water supply and to experience the Christ like attitudes of our fellow saints.
Things that we take for granted once taken…really deepen your understanding of how lucky you are to have them. We have gained more ideas how to store water and are going to look into some kind of water collection system…..because even it there is water in the pipes…that does not me they will let it come to your house. Things could drastically change. Being out of work for long durations of time, no money to pay for utilities….or if the government deems you someone that is not part of the “new world order” they won’t give you water. It really made me come to a deeper understanding how quick we can be cut off from basic needs. We have to learn to be very creative……

Re: unemployment
Thanks! Today they must have gotten the check because I saw them pull up....went outside and asked are you here to shut off more....or turning the water back on....the answer was turning the water on! Yippy! It will be nice to take a nice long shower!HoneyBee wrote:Thank you for sharing that Bella, I hope you're water situation gets better. That story really touched my heart, may the Lord help us to bless each other.
We really need to be thankful for what we have, count our blessings, because we never know when they will be taken. We must be really really prepared for every possible situation. We can not assume any of these kinds of things will always here be for us and be willing to help each other through these difficulties. We have to look at complete survival with out any of the luxuries that out time period has gotten used to as basic given rights…..they may not be available at some point. I am always willing to help my neighbors it was great to see them so lovely and supportive during this time. I forgot to say they also brought over some extra flash lights just incase our electricity went out….that was very sweet of them to add that to the water they brought! They were thinking ahead. We were worried because we were told within 24 hours to 48 they were going to shut off the electric.
My family does not eat sugar, but my neighbors do. So when we have been given gifts that contain sugar, or accidentally bought something that did and when we have had a get together and their were sugar leftovers like pop…..we just take it over to them. They are tight for money as many are, so I don’t like things going to waste. We offer the stuff to them.
We all need to help each other and work together and lighten each others burdens the best we can. I feel we are going to have lots more of opportunities for service as each day passes.

Re: unemployment
The hard part is being aware of the needs. Most people won't let you know they need help until it's too late. I have a friend that was arrested today for barricading himself in his home with a gun. He's a great guy. I'm not sure as to the why yet, he's in jail tonight, but I'm guessing it's finance related. 2 kids and one due in a month. He's self employed and heavily invested in real-estate development. Can't be doing too good right nowBella wrote:We all need to help each other and work together and lighten each others burdens the best we can. You are so right we must let go of Pride in all its forms! We must be open with our Bishops, family and friends. Pride is going to be the downfall of many in various different ways. We need to be our brother’s keeper. We must unite together to help lift each others burden. I feel we need to let our Bishop's know what we are willing and able to do. If we can take a family in, share needed supplies whatever it is. We can also ask if there is anything that he knows of we can do. I am so blessed to be in a great ward. We have had things happen out of our control and people have helped us in times of need. We do the same for others when they are down and out.
This happens to the best LDS. Things you can not control or plan for. Even if you have a food storage and put away money done all that was asked it only last so long. Trials can last way longer then what were have prepared for even if we have done more then what we were asked to do by the Brethren. Things like health bills that can wipe you out in just one major accident. Insurance theses days does not cover enough with its big deductibles and limits. So people literally can do all they have been told and still be in the negative.
That is why home teaching and visiting teaching is sooo important. We need to really get to know who we teach and not have it be an “everything is perfect little meeting”. But be real on both sides, the teachers and those being taught. It is time we drop pride and be real with each other. There is nothing to be ashamed of or fearful of. It is hard to do this if you have seen judgmental members in the past that have acted as if the person must have not lived righteously or God would not be doing this to you……this kind of thought needs to be wiped from the minds of all the saints. Wealth, health and tragedies are all the temporal things are not a letter “A” patch on a member showing their unworthiness. It is the time we need to step up and help and not judge. We need to unite as a family of Saints......Unite as Zion.

Re: unemployment
I had to stop by the LDS Employment services today briefly. I used to go their often as part of a delivery job. I was just filling in today. I haven't been there for about a year. Generally when I step in for only a few seconds, the place is a ghost house with the few brothers and sisters trying to keep themselves busy. Today, I pulled into the parking lot and it was very full. I stepped in and every table and cubicle had someone there speaking with them to employ their services in job search. Same story at the DWS, totally full. They were even conducting interviews in the lobby, as to overflow.
But we are just at 7% unemployment right? Nothing to worry about here. All is well, right?

Re: unemployment
The "unofficial" unemployment rate is over 20%. The "Official" rates are 2 months behind - on purpose. The official rates only take into account those eligible for unemployment benefits and easily tracked salaried jobs. Nothing about 1099s or other contractors.

I don't think it include those that used up their unemployment benefits and still are out of work. I think they drop off the radar...I could be wrong on that, but that is what I thought I heard....

Re: unemployment
Where did you get the 20% unemployment? I am self-employed, an architect, and I have had to let go of 3 good LDS guys, and 5 draftsmen, due to the amount of work to isn't coming in. We have seen massive layoffs in our industry. New York Times reports over 6,000 architects/draftsmen unemployed in New York City alone. When my old employees come back and visit, I was told that the number of jobs available nationwide is less than 100!
I am faced with the same things you all have been talking about. We have eeked along. Currently our receivables of over $100,00.00 but none of my past clients have the money to pay the back fees because of the devaluation of land and lack of credit. We have maybe one month left of monies that my partner and I can keep the place open and support ourselves. We started into the downward spiral in March of 2008. So, we feel blessed that God has helped us thus far, and made our meager income stretch as far.
I believe your unemployment rate may even been a little low. Somewhere in this forum, someone reported planned closings of 220,000 stores. Since our business relied on commercial/retail development, it may be years before that segment of the industry is up and running. I sincerely hope President Monson and the First Presidency address some of the fear that I and many others in my area feel....and we have been prepared. Of course, our food storage as shrunk, but my wife has done an excellent job with canning and bartering. Our money supply, while more than 4 months worth in the bank has now shrunk to a week's supply. So, I hope they give us hope for the future. The church cannot continue to take care of everyone who did not plan ahead. OUr stake, which Boyd K. Packard call one of the strongest in the Church and the benchmark, has finally had to request fast offering funds from Salt Lake. Mind you, 2 years ago, median income in this area was over $125,000 per family, with many in the seven digits. Lots of self-employed land developers, construction company owners, etc. We happen to live in the only middle class subdivision in this part of the City. We are surrounded by multi-million dollar homes that are now sitting vacant. We have reports that homes once selling at 375,000 can be had for as little as $70,000 (in the outlying areas of the City, in master planned communities).
Order is being kept, but the stress of so many people out of work (especially the self employed) is really starting to show. Many of them tried for unemployment, but were turned down because they, and I, are self-employed. So, right on, when you said that independent consultants and self-employed are not reported. You are absolutely correct.
If my area is similar to other parts of the nation, there are a whole lot of people unemployed that are not showing up in the "official" tally.

True, but I have to fight the "6% unemployment rate" statistics which are totally bogus, "so as not to frighten the citizens" and make the politicos look good. Yes, it may actually be closer to 50% in one ore month. The official rate was supposed to jump up to 16% by end of February. As choreographed.

Re: unemployment
Wow, just reading through these stories of unemployment. I also know multiple people who have recently been laid off, some of them worked for Disney's software (game) division.
I am self-employed as a Web Designer and business has been slow for the past 4 months. Multiple clients that I was doing ongoing web design work for have drastically cut back in their business (they were affected by the real estate and stock markets).
On top of the financial trouble, my wife is having a baby next week (that will make 3 boys).
If things don't improve we may have to move out of the condo we are renting, luckily we have family in the area but I would prefer not to be a burden on them.
Who knows, maybe this website will be shut down cause I can no longer afford it

Re: unemployment
We have many families in my ward including my Bishop that are out of work, they were laid off. They are not finding anything...It is really scary. Our stake is from what I have heard is having to go to the church for help, which they have not needed to do before or at least for so many years that no one even remembers......I can imagine what it is like in wards that have more troubles in the past. That is why the church is changing all the rules of the welfare system of the church. I don't know what they are yet, but I do know they are changing them.
