HSBC planned on downsizing in October of last year. This massive cut of jobs is most likely a result of Brexit. Though the bank is based in Hong Kong also, so the coronavirus may have some play at this. I wouldn’t outright blame the virus. The downsizing is planned to happen over the next 3 years, so it isn’t all of a sudden. 35,000 people didn’t just randomly lose their jobs. It’s attrition, not lay-offs.

I agree. Natural wastage ratherthan redundancies.
Also, Brexit gets the blame for everything these days, especially by the BBC.
Unemployment in the UK is at a record low... despite Brexit.
Job vacancies are at a record high.... despite Brexit.
Foreign investment in the UK is now higher than it's ever been.... despite Brexit.
England reached the semi-final of the World Cup... despite Brexit.
