How to upload an avatar

I've tried to upload about 10 different pictures as avatars and none of them are allowed. Why is it like this?

I had to put my image through an image editor just to get the quality down so it fit the file size requirement. Perhaps your picture file is too big? It also has image dimension requirements too.
