Love to get someone to help me understand what happened in MArk 8

23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.

24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.

25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.

Questions:
1. why is spit being used? This is the second time in Mark Jesus uses spit and puts his finger in someones ear as part of the healing process. Where is the laying on of hands to heal? Is this something that we've lost as part of the healing process?

2. Why did he have to heal this man twice? Why didn't the first time work?

The lord used his spit in a similar manner that one could use oil. It inspires faith and is a sign the spirit will seal the blessing. To lay your hands on someone to heal is another trigger to inspire faith. It isn’t required for every healing. The woman with the blood problem merely touched Jesus’ robe with all her faith, and she was healed. The children of Israel who looked to the bronze snake were healed from the snake bites.

When Jesus put spit on his eyes and laid his hands on his eyes the first time, the man was able to see more clearly, but it was still fuzzy a bit. The lord again laid his hands on the mans eyes, and he could see in full.
I take this process as something to help the man use miraculous faith, in the perfect way.
The man went from blind, to seeing fuzzy, to complete sight. Isn’t this how the lord works with us too? We only see a little bit, but as we press forward in faith, he will heal us, and we will come to see his face in time.

That's a good question.

I'm not sure.

I think one of the reasons may be to show that , as always, the Lords ways are higher than ours, and the Lord will do whatever he wishes, however he wishes. He can heal using this method, or any number of other methods. I can see him doing this to help us see and separate ourselves from an obsession with "the letter of the law" and focus on the spirit. It's not the hands that heal the man, it's the faith , the sanctification.

Why twice? Not sure either. Tyler's answer sounds like a solid theory

Ever watch the film, “Fiddler on the Roof” and notice all the superstitious spitting? I read that saliva was associated with mystical healing powers way back during Jesus’s time. Since Jesus healed many times without that, maybe he used that to help the faith of those around.

But I also like Tyler’s take - in likening the story to us.
