How would you spend 100 billion?

Post by itsmerich »

Imagine your the head of the Church. You've got 100 billion dollars (a sum so unimaginable large) and the situation is you use the interest on this to pay for all expenses (e.g. electricity, salaries etc).

How would you then invest/spend the 100 billion? Or do you continue to hoard more and more and more. And when is enough enough? Would you ask members to spend more on their missionaries? Continue to raise BYU college tuition? Continue to have mission presidents/and likely other leaders be tithing exempt? Continue paying the higher level leaders a nice salary and likely with yearly raises.

Let's look at D&c 119:2

Tithing is commanded for us to be used to:
2 For the building of mine ahouse, and for the laying of the foundation of Zion and for the priesthood, and for the debts of the Presidency of my Church.

Have we built sufficient temples? I'd say yes we have enough and sure more is better but we'll be at a point where more temples may not be needed.

Have we layed the foundation for the (city) of Zion? No. Have we even started?

We use tithing for the priesthood (e.g. paying salaries to apostsles/etc).

We've paid off our debts.

So with the 100 billion what should we use it for? Do we need to keep tithing the saints with this incredible bounty and lessen the financial burden on the faithful? yes, I know tithing is a standing law forever so should we revise tithing (again) due to policy so its truly on surplus as it was originally commanded? Look at how many families would be blessed. They then can put more into fast offerings/other donations to then help the poor and fulfill the commandment to have no poor among us?

Am I missing something?

Here's what I'd do

1. CLEARLY go back to the original command of tithing on surplus
2. Use the funds to truly lift struggling LDS families (training, counseling, help as needed)
3. Create free family services where no member needs to pay (yes sometimes bishops pay for it all)
4. Lower byu tuition and book costs by a lot - lessen student housing cost burdens
5. Pay members who want to clean the church for extra cash
6. give these overworked bishops a stipend - they deserve it
7. not ask families to pay more for missionary work, im all for them paying a portion but the church should fully support this if a family opts for this
8. more ward activities / let's get social - increase the budget where members shouldnt have to always bring food they make -
9. identify local needs for those outside the church to help relieve suffering (homelesness, poverty, foster kids, etc) - make impactful local changes
10. increase the ad budget for the church - have it be a beacon of hope sharing with others how to be good, come to christ etc.
11. wipe all costs associated with going to camps - unbelievable we're charging for this with 100 billion in reserve
12. Be 100% transparent with how we spend including salaries etc.

We're at a period of great prosperity - allocate these funds so today's generations can benefit from this while being smart with how we spend. There's MORE than enough right now. We tithe payers and those who came before us helped the church get to this point - let's enjoy the fruit of our labors.

What would you do?

I would spend it on leaving Babylon....

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
------------

Yet.....we use it to traffic....in ALL manner of traffic

1And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

When I was a boy... I heard my elders say "we are Zion!!!" Their leaven would build zion like a mirage on the horizon. I was thirsty, but when I approached....it was just more desert.

We water down greatness to make it seem like we possess what we lack.

I agree with going back to the correct way with tithing based on increase - not on income, and especially helping those in need.

Despite being born and raised in the church, not until relatively recently did I realize the lower law of tithing tells that 1/3 of TITHES are for the poor. Christ asked much more of those who’ve been blessed to be able to give more.

Look at your triple combination or lds bible dictionary under “tithing” and notice the following scripture missing - probably because lds tithing collectors disobey it. Although finances are kept secret, Oaks admitted no tithes go to help the poor. This disobeys the lower law of tithing and the greatest commandments “which hang all the law and the prophets.”
  • “At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates:
And the Levite, (because he hath no part nor inheritance with thee,) and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, which are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied...”-
    Deuteronomy 14:28-29
Who do tithes belong to? God. And how do we love God? By loving the least of these...

  • “Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!” -
    Mark 10:21-23
