3 Nephi 21 paints the picture clearly.
3 Nephi 21:14 "I will destroy thy chariots;" and 3 Nephi 21:12 "And my people who are a remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles, yea, in the midst of them as a... young lion among the flocks of sheep, who, if he go through both treadeth down and teareth in pieces,."

23 And they (Converted Gentiles) shall assist my people, the remnant of Jacob, and also as many of the house of Israel as shall come, that they may build a city, which shall be called the New Jerusalem.
Who is a Remnant,
We both are. Jacob's 11th son from Rachel was named Joseph and he had two sons Ephraim and Manasseh.
In early church it was discovered that much of the red haired Ephraim (Also look for the symbol of the unicorn) remnants were to be found among the British Isles. Lehi's tribe was Manasseh ( Alma 10:3 ) Lamanites are often Manasseh. This could fill volumes but the truths all orbit these two points.
Like say with Cortez, the Spaniard and Portuguese that conquered and slaughtered Central and South American went on to interbreed with those we commonly think of as possible descendants of laminates. These created mixed race individuals often called Mestizo. As you can see in Venezuala they make up 64% of the population. These are not uncommon ratios for other central and south American countries.
Compare to North America where Native Americans, simply due to winters, never had anything like the population densities of central and south America. Combine the later measels blankets and that british settlers apparently were frankly less rapey of natives and the story today is wayyyy different. 1/1024 jokes aside, See link below, Native Americans population is 6.79 million, or 2.09% of the entire US population. The interbreeding numbers barely exist outside of that 2%.

Why:
America now puts pleasure before family and openly blasphemes God. For all their other faults these are vastly less common behaviors among central and south Americans.
Cant find it just now, but at one point in the book of Mormon it is addressed why God sided with the lamanites in a war against the more civilized and less murderous Nephites. It had come down to Nephites were not humble and even blasphemous before God and destroyed their families in pursuit of pleasure. The humble heathen is preserved.
When:

I suspect as long as gentile nations allow temple work and missionary work to continue the Lord will postpone their day of Judgement. But when Temples are closed and defiled. When Missionaries are brought home. When Saints are brutalized by their own countrymen, at that point the remnant that is now within our borders and among us will combine, flex and burn the gentile cities to the grounds.
They already organize and openly brag about their plans to reclaim "Aztlan."

It is amidst this violence and chaos that only in Zion will there be peace. To me it seems natural that pace for us will only be in those areas where the priesthood organization will be unified in purpose and willing to work together to survive and be able to repel gang violence. At this point the other tribes join us and some from remnants from Ephraim and Manasseh travel, sans chariots, to Missouri, are joined by other remnants to build our New Jerusalem.
