Pay Tithing or Pay Other Charitable Contributions

Post by Great8 »

So I am a little disappointed in learning that tithes aren't going to feed the poor.
Disappointed that the Church isn't spending more money to help the poor.
I could go on...
The question I have is whether there are any charitable organizations that are worth donating to?
I read someone's comment on here about https://bountifulchildren.org/who-we-are
They have released their tax returns and seem to be a good organization where the funds go directly to the needy.
Are there any other orgs out there worth recommending?
I have been a full tithe payer my entire life but willing to change it up a bit in 2020. I would rather see children in a remote village get new shoes than pay for a chandelier in a temple.

Amen. I did this and havent looked back. I donate to St. Judes childrens hospital. Every so often I switch it up and donate to the homeless shelter in Ogden and a few other small groups. I am so thoroughly disgusted and saddened that the church is hording wealth rather than help the sick and afflicted that I wonder if they will ever see another dime of mine.

As difficult as it can be for some of us from time to time, the reality is that some of the leaders in their talks have asked us to pay our fast and tithing to the Church and also find something extra to give to support other worthy causes in our community.

There is a humanitarian box on the tithing slip :)

Which may or may not go to any humanitarian needs . . .

I don't like that I have to burn my lamb without blemish (or any other sacrifice) in front of the priests and temple. Sometimes the priests even eat the meat!

Does anyone know of any charitable organization that I can donate my sacrifices to?

I recommend just paying your tithing as God commands. The widow and her two mites is the example to follow. Accusing one side of not following God’s commandments does not justify the other side to break God’s commandments, too. In any case, God probably cares more what you do with the 90% left over.

Buy up a bunch of OTEC stock, but most of us poor peasants can’t save the world on our meager take home pay. But as for me there is no cause more worthy of my investment. :P

Wait, I know you're very enthusiastic about OTEC and that's fine. But is buying OTEC stock a worthier cause than tithing, fast offerings, or other charitable giving?

The tithing slip has a legal disclaimer that indicates your specified humanitarian aid donation can go wherever the Church wants, and there is absolutely NO guarantee whatsoever that it will go to any sort of humanitarian aid.
I showed the disclaimer to a non-member friend of mine who is a lawyer, and he said that the designations on the slip are moot -- meaning worthless. Any funds donated can go anywhere the church leaders decide. Anywhere.

Yes, that's a good one.

Also, you could look for ways to help those in need in your immediate ward, neighborhood or community. Perhaps even ask your Bishop if there are any families in particular that could use some extra assistance.

Good ideas about helping directly.

Pray to know what God would have you do. Honest charities don’t hide finances. Good for those who are good stewards of sacred tithes and do due diligence in ensuring they go to GOD - “the least of these.”
https://www.charitynavigator.org/

Even if you designated fast offerings or humanitarian aid - the church leaders now say it’s their money and they can use it as they want...

If you believed that Russel M. Nelson is Joseph Smith's successor and that he and the others leaders of the Utah church have authority from God to collect tithing, then by all means pay up, even if some people don't like what they're doing with it.

If you don't believe that, find something else to do with your money.

That's what I've done since I started investigating the Restoration Branches earlier this year. (The Josephites tithe on increase rather than income).

I give to several nonprofits but my biggest contributions are to this one.
They're tiny, but they're fighting an important issue that doesn't get near as much attention as it deserves, so they need all the help they can get.

Research and pray about it yourself: tithing is meant to be shared with the poor.

Tithes belong to God and as we love “the least of these” we love God.
