Preparing for further economic downturn - buying gold?

As I've been following what has been going on and really starting to understand everything over the last couple of years, I've been meaning to do something to try to protect some of my wealth as the economy here deteriorates. As the dollar is still experiencing a small rally, I've been thinking to perhap buy some gold as a long term investment since it is pretty well guaranteed to go up in the long term.
So I am wondering if anyone can help me out with some advice - if I should or shouldn't buy gold? Where and how should I go about it, etc?

Thanks in advance.

my advice, if you do decide to buy gold is DO NOT watch the price! Just buy it, and forget you have it.

It can really fluctuate, but will NEVER go to $0.00 like stocks. Best buy right now is silver. Look at the gold to silver ration historically vs. now.

Years ago the government made the people sell their gold bullion. The coins were considered collectors items and were safe from the government. It will probably happen again.

I thought about buying gold too but I need other things before I go out and invest in gold. I would make sure you have; 1 year supply of food, clothing, heating, guns, ammo, and a reliable vehicle first. If you have anything left over go ahead and buy gold. By the end of next year the dollar will be worthless and you’ll have something to trade or buy with.

I just don't see gold being worth that much if the dollar has no value. At that point, I want something I can eat or use. If someone offered me gold for food why would I take it? I don't have access to international markets. Maybe someone can clarify for me: when I invest in gold they don't actually send me the gold. So if the dollar collapses but I have shares of gold that someone (maybe abroad) still values and I can sell my shares, what currency do they pay you in? Is there any currency that would be of value to you seeing that we are in america? I can't imagine there would be unless you can get out. I guess my only hope in gold would be to ride out the calamities and hopefully have wealth after things stabilize. But it may be useless to me in times of turmoil.

I agree that we must abolutely follow the prophets' warnings and secure a full year's supply of food etc. (that's funny, I originally typed a full year's supply of gold!!). I've put much of my excess savings into gold and silver bullion. If the state confiscates precious metals, then I'll be burying it. In fact, I'd rather throw it into the sea than hand it over to the Gadiantons.

I started buying gold in September 2007. I used to watch the COMEX gold prices and get worried when the price dropped, but now I can see the real value of gold is much higher than they say. I buy gold whether COMEX is saying it's going up or down.

Oh yes, I nearly forgot that when gold hit its all time high of $1015 in March this year, the £GBP price was just over £500. We can now see the importance in storing some of our wealth in gold because the £GBP has dropped against the USD. COMEX gold is now touching £575, but is only a little over $830 in USD.

I wonder what will happen in 2009!

If you have savings. I wouldn't hesitate to turn it into sliver and gold coins immediately. None of this commodity stuff. Probably should have done it about a month ago though. The dollar has been heading nowhere fast since, almost back to it's original low levels.

The strongest currency of the past several years, the GBP has lost a ton of value and continues to sink. One world Currency here we come.

They generally have good deals. America Silver and Golg Eagles is they way I would go when they have them in stock. Right now, that is one of those rare times.

Where do people go to actually buy gold coins? They sell it on eBay, but I'm concerned about the risk of being ripped off.

There are places all over the place here that are like pawn shops that buy and sell it.

I recall a quote, I think from one of the prophets, about a time that if someone were to offer him a bag of gold or a cat, he'd take the cat because he could eat it. Anyone know where that is?

I expect the FedGov, under the direction of the LDGs, will at some point legislate the illegality of private ownership of gold, guns, and possibly bullion silver as well.

Question: do you think the system will be stable until April 15th, 2009?
(ie, will folks be paying their taxes if they wait till then?)

Join someone who was recently asking me and others to file a petition to drag the LDS church into court, to have it's non-profit status revoked? - I'll pass.

CHH makes alot of sense sometimes and understands the proper role of govenment, and I salute his/her impressive knowledge base, and I understand the love of liberty, it's the methods I wonder about.

Buying Gold is a good thing- if you have all the other bases covered first, but I would still buy your first 2-10k in silver.

Don't misunderstand -- I intend to pay taxes, indeed there is money taken out of my small pension each month. I'm just wondering aloud what happens if the system goes south before April 15th?

Cwass' suggestion made me smile... :)

Again I ask, "when you eat your gold, do you season it first?"

My husband invested in silver coins. We just can't afford much gold, so silver is much more doable for us. But we're mostly concentrating on food, etc. We went through a coin dealer in our area. We had to pay a little fee but it wasn't too bad.

I get the distinct feeling that 2009 will be a year unlike any we've experienced before. There have already been a number of household names that have gone into adminstration in Britain during the last week or so. The media is saying that many more are expected to go under in the New Year. I've been surprised to see some long established businesses boarded up when driving through town ths week - car dealerships etc.

This is Christmas Eve and many shops in my area are simply closed or not doing much business at all. I bought a couple more gold sovereigns this morning, and the shop owner told me that business has been terrible.

I wonder if we will see a final surge of baptisms during 2009 as people lose their jobs and homes?

No, I wouldn't buy them from eBay.

Go to a recognised coin dealer.

You could try http://www.midasresources.com/Gold_Offer/Offer_AJ.html

Don't forget to tell them that you heard of the deal on Alex Jones' show, then you get a much better price.

You want to have gold and silver in your hand, rather than paper promises.

Ketchup. Makes everything taste great!

I think the point is to get the food first THEN buy Gold/Silver. I can think of several things that gold/silver will buy when the world realizes what our monopoly money is really worth.
1. Bribes.
2. Buy medication, which I imagine will become rare during the collapse.
3. Buy fuel/gas, vehicle parts, ammo, tools, etc.

I also thought about trade items I could stock up on for barter. These would be things that will be in high demand and run out quickly. Things like; alcohol, tobacco, perfume/cologne (during the Depression these were in great demand), toilet paper, soap, etc. I am reluctant to buy the alcohol and tobacco because of the WofW but they will probably be the best trade goods outside of Utah.

[Maybe it's "time" to join CHH?]

John Adams, what or who is CHH? Newbie question.

From what I understand, things are much worse in England than they appear to be hear. But then again, I get all my British inside information from Top Gear, so who knows.

I think Britain and the US are heading for the same motorway pile up on different sides of the road.

BTW, I like to get my historical facts from Black Adder ;)
