What is the half hour of silence?
When the 7th seal is opened, there is a half hour of silence. I've read many ideas of what it means. Some say it's no more communication from Heaven. I don't think that's correct. Some have said that the work in Heaven stops while it's inhabitants look at our little earth and watch for the advent of Christ. I'm curious what people here think. Any ideas?

Re: What is the half hour of silence?
According to the celebrated LDS scholar Cleon Skousen the silence is in heaven and the half an hour ends in about 2020-2021 when the 7 year tribulation starts. Several LDS (and other non LDS) Christians think the same so I suspect 200th anniversary of the church will be celebrated during the Millennium.

In light of my new resolution of playing nice in the forum and being more positive I will refrain from objecting to your use of the words "celebrated" and "scholar" and instead wish you a good day.Eulate wrote: ↑July 8th, 2019, 2:24 pm According to the celebrated LDS scholar Cleon Skousen the silence is in heaven and the half an hour ends in about 2020-2021 when the 7 year tribulation starts. 11 For all flesh is corrupted before me; and the powers of darkness prevail upon the earth, among the children of men, in the presence of all the hosts of heaven—
12 Which causeth silence to reign, and all eternity is pained, and the angels are waiting the great command to reap down the earth, to gather the tares that they may be burned; and, behold, the enemy is combined.

I think it is a lack of prophecy from the prophets. Name me a prophecy from Hinkley, Monson or Nelson that has come to pass. And no dont give the food storage or proclamation of the family. Real Joseph Smith style prophesy. Some future event that is fulfilled within the near future.

Re: What is the half hour of silence?
Maybe...It’s the moment between when the gentiles pass the point of no return to the time when God’s wrath shall be poured out upon a hypocritical nation. The time when the prophet no longer calls the gentiles unto repentance, but observes and records, in the manner of Ether/Mormon, the internal downfall of a once beloved people. The time when personal revelation is necessary for the blunt boldness of past proclamations is deafened due to the wisdom of God.
Maybe...the silence is there to delay the calamities and judgements of God or to allow the wheat and tares to finish growing for optimal separation...
Maybe...it’s there so the faith of the saints can be tried and prepared for the day of sanctification and resultant reception of God’s power in “great glory”...

While I can second the praise of Br. Skousen with terms such as "celebrated" and "scholar", where exactly does he suppose that it begins in 2020-2021?
... Is it in that thread about what we might expect in the next 25 years? I'm having issues opening the link for some reason.

Until 1582 A.D. our calendar was not at all accurate, but Pope Gregory employed a group of mathematicians and astronomers to restructure the calendar. They set up the new calendar so that it was in perfect harmony or calibration with the sun. To make it completely accurate they had to add one day every four years and that is how we got our “leap year.”
But even with all that restructuring, how are we certain that it is completely accurate? The best answer to that question is in the Doctrine and Covenants. On two occasions the Lord used the Gregorian calendar in such a way that it seemed to clearly imply his approval of it.
In Section 20 the Lord said he wanted the Church established on the sixth day of April because it would be “one thousand eight hundred and thirty years since the coming of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the flesh.” 16
In the very next section we are told the Church was set up by Joseph Smith under the guidance of the Holy Ghost and then it says:
“Which church was organized and established in the year of your Lord eighteen hundred and thirty, in the fourth month, and on the sixth day of the month which is called April.” 17
So if our calendar is accurate and apparently approved by the Lord, there is no question about the date of the opening of the seventh seal and the half hour of silence in heaven. It will commence in the year 2000 AD .
https://www.latterdayconservative.com/w ... ive-years/Since we know the half hour of silence begins at 2,000 A.D. when the seventh seal is opened and since we know from a modern revelation that the half hour of silence ends with the Second Coming, can we calculate in terms of years the length of time which will elapse between these two monumental events? In other words, can we determine about how long the half hour of silence lasts?
One of the apostles felt that such a calculation was possible. Here is the way Elder Bruce R. McConkie suggested it could be done. After talking about the half hour of silence, he says:
“If the time here mentioned is ‘ Lord’s time’ in which one day is a thousand years, the haft hour would be some twenty-one of our years.”
Elder McConkie reached this conclusion based on the following scriptures:
“A day with the Lord after his manner of reckoning, it being 1000 years according to the time appointed to that [ whereon thou standest.”
And again:
“But beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that ONE DAY is with the Lord as a THOUSAND YEARS, and a thousand years as one day.”
The next step was to divide 1,000 years by 24 to determine what an hour would be according to God’s time. It turned out to be 41.66 years or just under 42 years. This means that a half hour of God’s time would be ? 7 years or nearly 21 years. This would clearly suggest that this is the duration of the half hour of silence in heaven and the period of time when the angels undertake the calamitous preparation of the earth for the Savior’s second coming.

Re: What is the half hour of silence?
I contend that we have not yet begun the half hour of silence. Note what is said in the D&C.
D&C 88
86 Abide ye in the liberty wherewith ye are made free; entangle not yourselves in sin, but let your hands be clean, until the Lord comes.
87 For not many days hence and the earth shall tremble and reel to and fro as a drunken man; and the sun shall hide his face, and shall refuse to give light; and the moon shall be bathed in blood; and the stars shall become exceedingly angry, and shall cast themselves down as a fig that falleth from off a fig tree.
88 And after your testimony cometh wrath and indignation upon the people.
89 For after your testimony cometh the testimony of earthquakes, that shall cause groanings in the midst of her, and men shall fall upon the ground and shall not be able to stand.
90 And also cometh the testimony of the voice of thunderings, and the voice of lightnings, and the voice of tempests, and the voice of the waves of the sea heaving themselves beyond their bounds.
91 And all things shall be in commotion; and surely, men’s hearts shall fail them; for fear shall come upon all people.
92 And angels shall fly through the midst of heaven, crying with a loud voice, sounding the trump of God, saying: Prepare ye, prepare ye, O inhabitants of the earth; for the judgment of our God is come. Behold, and lo, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
93 And immediately there shall appear a great sign in heaven, and all people shall see it together.
94 And another angel shall sound his trump, saying: That great church, the mother of abominations, that made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, that persecuteth the saints of God, that shed their blood—she who sitteth upon many waters, and upon the islands of the sea—behold, she is the tares of the earth; she is bound in bundles; her bands are made strong, no man can loose them; therefore, she is ready to be burned. And he shall sound his trump both long and loud, and all nations shall hear it.
95 And there shall be silence in heaven for the space of half an hour; and immediately after shall the curtain of heaven be unfolded, as a scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up, and the face of the Lord shall be unveiled;
96 And the saints that are upon the earth, who are alive, shall be quickened and be caught up to meet him.
97 And they who have slept in their graves shall come forth, for their graves shall be opened; and they also shall be caught up to meet him in the midst of the pillar of heaven—
98 They are Christ’s, the first fruits, they who shall descend with him first, and they who are on the earth and in their graves, who are first caught up to meet him; and all this by the voice of the sounding of the trump of the angel of God.
99 And after this another angel shall sound, which is the second trump; and then cometh the redemption of those who are Christ’s at his coming; who have received their part in that prison which is prepared for them, that they might receive the gospel, and be judged according to men in the flesh.
100 And again, another trump shall sound, which is the third trump; and then come the spirits of men who are to be judged, and are found under condemnation;
101 And these are the rest of the dead; and they live not again until the thousand years are ended, neither again, until the end of the earth.
102 And another trump shall sound, which is the fourth trump, saying: There are found among those who are to remain until that great and last day, even the end, who shall remain filthy still.
103 And another trump shall sound, which is the fifth trump, which is the fifth angel who committeth the everlasting gospel—flying through the midst of heaven, unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people;
104 And this shall be the sound of his trump, saying to all people, both in heaven and in earth, and that are under the earth—for every ear shall hear it, and every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess, while they hear the sound of the trump, saying: Fear God, and give glory to him who sitteth upon the throne, forever and ever; for the hour of his judgment is come.
105 And again, another angel shall sound his trump, which is the sixth angel, saying: She is fallen who made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication; she is fallen, is fallen!
106 And again, another angel shall sound his trump, which is the seventh angel, saying: It is finished; it is finished! The Lamb of God hath overcome and trodden the wine-press alone, even the wine-press of the fierceness of the wrath of Almighty God.
107 And then shall the angels be crowned with the glory of his might, and the saints shall be filled with his glory, and receive their inheritance and be made equal with him.
108 And then shall the first angel again sound his trump in the ears of all living, and reveal the secret acts of men, and the mighty works of God in the first thousand years.
109 And then shall the second angel sound his trump, and reveal the secret acts of men, and the thoughts and intents of their hearts, and the mighty works of God in the second thousand years—
110 And so on, until the seventh angel shall sound his trump; and he shall stand forth upon the land and upon the sea, and swear in the name of him who sitteth upon the throne, that there shall be time no longer; and Satan shall be bound, that old serpent, who is called the devil, and shall not be loosed for the space of a thousand years.

We have yet to experience mighty earthquakes, the sun go dark and the moon to turn to blood as described.
We have yet to witness the half hour of silence succeeding the massive earthquakes that make the earth reel to and fro.
IMO, I don't think Y2K has anything to do with the upcoming silence foretold. And just what is this silence? It is a sign that Christ is about to come to earth to reign. It is a followup to the commotion, calamities and destruction.
Some here will disagree, nevertheless, this is why I ask you to read D&C 88 for yourselves and glean from it if you desire to refute my words.
Another few points here, are: God made the earth in six days (six thousand years in our time). On the seventh day he rested.
Approximately six thousand-twenty years have passed since the fall.
Christ comes in the meridian of time (middle of earth's time) which is eight thousand years.
There are one thousand-nine hundred-eighty years till the end of the earth.
Somewhere withing these 1,980 years is the Millennium.
At the end of the Millennium there is a short season until the earth is renewed.
Six thousand-plus years, then the Millennium, followed by a short season, We simply do not know at what point Christ will come within the next 1,980 +/- years.

I think 2030 is too soon for it to be during the Millennium, (wow, that's only 10.5 years away!) a lot has to happen still. But I do think the millennium will be within 20 years or so.

Where do you get the 8,000 year figure from? Is it just because Jesus came approx 4000 years in, and so you doubled that? Just being a little jocular. However, I hope there will be a lot less liberals yelling at the top of their lungs attempting to change all society into a mass of slaves under a crooked government. I feel that would be bliss for a while, anyway, although there will be a lot more death and destruction on earth during that time. Somewhere in the future those two prophets have to walk the streets of Jerusalem and be murdered. There is a lot more of having to deal with Satan prior to the Millennium.

Re: What is the half hour of silence?
It was prophesied that Christ would come in the meridian of time. So it must be a time in which there is a peak or zenith, or perhaps a center. Therefore, Christ came four thousand years after the fall, so I doubled that time and came up with eight thousand, with Christ in the center.
This is not totally doctrinal, just my opinion.
We're already passed the sixth thousand years mark by nearly 20 years, and the Millennium hasn't begun yet. And since there is a short season afterward, it stands to reason that the Millennium isn't set for an exact date, but must occur some time within the next 1,980 years. For all we know, the short season could be only a few hundred years, not a thousand. For this reason, I don't think we have entered into the seventh seal yet. When we do all hell is supposed to break loose, massive earthquakes, thunder and lightenings, great hail storms. the sun being darkened and so on.

Re: What is the half hour of silence?
If we are expecting to see a literal interpretation fulfilled, then we should have expected to see riders on different colored horses performing the work of death with the opening of the first four seals. We don't have any such thing recorded, of people witnessing actual riders, and it is generally understood that these descriptions are symbolic. For this reason, I look at the earthquake and sun/moon/stars descriptions also as symbolic.LDS Physician wrote: ↑July 9th, 2019, 5:47 pm I thought the opening of the 7th seal was accompanied by a monster, world-wide earthquake? I don't recall such a quake in 2000.

righteousrepublic wrote: ↑July 9th, 2019, 6:19 pm I contend that we have not yet begun the half hour of silence.
95 And there shall be silence in heaven for the space of half an hour; and immediately after shall the curtain of heaven be unfolded, as a scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up, and the face of the Lord shall be unveiled;
100 And again, another trump shall sound, which is the third trump; and then come the spirits of men who are to be judged, and are found under condemnation;
101 And these are the rest of the dead; and they live not again until the thousand years are ended, neither again, until the end of the earth.
102 And another trump shall sound, which is the fourth trump, saying: There are found among those who are to remain until that great and last day, even the end, who shall remain filthy still.
103 And another trump shall sound, which is the fifth trump, which is the fifth angel who committeth the everlasting gospel—flying through the midst of heaven, unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people;
104 And this shall be the sound of his trump, saying to all people, both in heaven and in earth, and that are under the earth—for every ear shall hear it, and every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess, while they hear the sound of the trump, saying: Fear God, and give glory to him who sitteth upon the throne, forever and ever; for the hour of his judgment is come.

One possibility is that there are two different half-hours described, one in Revelation, and one in D&C. Perhaps one is 21 years, and the other an actual half-hour according to earth time. An example of dual time-frames given is in Revelation when we see the woman going into the wilderness for 1260 years according to J.S. translation. And then we have her fleeing a second time for what appears to be 1260 days, or 3 1/2 years.

Interesting, could you please provide complete references for these assertions? Perhaps several people would like to do some research, including myself.Sarah wrote: ↑July 10th, 2019, 11:39 amOne possibility is that there are two different half-hours described, one in Revelation, and one in D&C. Edit: Never mind, I found them myself.
I do not know or understand why "1,260 days" got changed to "1,260 years...Rev 12:1-17, JST Rev 15:1-17
1,260 days = nearly 3 1/2 years. 1,260 years = ? How many years were there from the death of Christ and his apostles until the gospel was restored in 1830? IMO, this in the only logical option that could explain that length of time and that it is the gospel, the iron rod or word of God, was driven into the wilderness. Does anyone know the math on this?
So far I have found no reference for a second time.

1. something used for or regarded as representing something else, esp. a material object representing something immaterial; emblem or sign.
Are you implying that the colored horses are immaterial objects representing calamities, chaos and destruction, being material? If so, what or who could be the actual leaders or commanders heading the destruction, etc?

Re: What is the half hour of silence?
Sure. But just to be clear, I'm throwing it out as a possible explanation and not asserting that I think this is the truth. Your guess is as good as minerighteousrepublic wrote: ↑July 10th, 2019, 1:27 pmInteresting, could you please provide complete references for these assertions?
