The true latter day Prophet, Joseph made thousands of changes in the Bible.

Post by kirtland r.m. »

How many times do you hear that Joseph Smith just copied Biblical passages for Book of Mormon text, or how many verses in the Bible were really changed in the J.S.T., probably few. Wrong, and wrong, enter into the world of things as they really are.

How many verses of the Bible was the Prophet Joseph Smith inspired to change?

After examining the JST manuscript, Robert J. Matthews discovered that with the verses added as an introduction to the book of Genesis (now Moses chapter 1 in the Pearl of Great Price) plus 1,289 other verses changed in the Old Testament and 2,096 verses changed in the New Testament, the JST offers insights and clarification in 3,410 verses.[13] Many of these changes deal with the very passages that make the Bible confusing to read. Thus, when we read the JST, we receive inspired prophetic commentary to assist us with over three thousand verses, many of which are challenging, confusing, or misleading as they now stand.https://rsc.byu.edu/archived/volume-5-n ... hanges-not

Read some of these if you haven't already, they are very enlightening. So much for another Protestant false doctrine(the Bible is complete, and without errors).

If you are discussing scholarship on the JST it would be well to use the recent updates.

In this study a BYU professor shows that Joseph Smith's translation has extensive overlaps with a translation and commentary by Adam Clark that was widely available in the 1820's and 30's. It is an interesting study in the method of the translation.

That's fine justme, you would do well to apply a little reason as well as the words of Adam Clark. Your "widely available" study could not have been available to many, including dirt poor farmers, who (many of them ) had little or no schooling. And it seems those who would attack the latter day translations ect. would make Joseph Smith quite a bookworm, and very rich to have access to just about every piece written at that time. In addition to that, there is this as well. He must have been a really, really good and very lucky guesser.

A Strange Thing in the Land: The Return of the Book of Enoch, Part 1
By Hugh Nibley, Professor Emeritus of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University
Here is a sample of what is inside.
"So we are forced back on the one and only really valid test of the authenticity of an ancient record, which does not depend on the writing materials used, nor the language in which it was written, nor the method of translation, but simply asks the question, “How does it compare with other records known to be authentic?” This is what the critics of the Book of Mormon and the book of Abraham have never been willing to face up to; with the book of Enoch they have no other choice—and so, through the years, they have simply ignored the book of Enoch. Yet there never was a more delightfully vulnerable and testable object. It offers the nearest thing to a perfectly foolproof test—neat, clear-cut, and decisive—of Joseph Smith’s claim to inspiration."https://www.lds.org/study/ensign/1975/1 ... 1?lang=eng

A Strange Thing in the Land:

The Return of the Book of Enoch, Part 2
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/stu ... 2?lang=eng Here is a quote from this article.
Finally, even if Joseph Smith had had the rich apocryphal literature of our own day at his disposal, with the thousands of pages of Enoch, or even the 1821 text of Laurence, how would he have known how to handle the stuff? The Prophet’s book of Enoch is less than three chapters long; how was he to know from all that what to put in and what to leave out to produce a text that most nearly corresponds to what modern scholars view as the authentic original material of Enoch’s book? He did just that; he put together in a few hours the kind of text most closely corresponding to what specialists, after years of meticulous comparison of texts, come up with as the hypothetically essential text of Enoch. Let us now turn to the Enoch texts they have been using for their diligent comparative studies, and see how the Enoch story has emerged through the years. (To be continued.)

Get out of the Anti Mormon sources, you will learn a lot more, and be much better off. Unless you want to take the time to shread them as I and others can easily do, with a little real knowledge and some inspiration from above.

You are forgetting Sidney Rigdon's background and role in the translation/revision. Read the study to learn more.

And what if I do a post on this, will it really matter to you? By the way, since you bring up Sidney Rigdon, are you remembering what it was he and Joseph saw in an upper room at the John Johnson Farm? That vastly supersedes any issue you want to bring up with what knowledge Sidney may have had as a former Baptist Minister. Oh and by the way, many of the "new doctrines" which were actually restored doctrine taught by the Savior and His Apostles, where actually in direct opposition to what Sidney R. had believed and taught as a Baptist Minister, including what the Lord showed Him and Joseph in that upper room. I have much more on Sidney if you want to discuss this further. Including information about what he taught and believed for the remainder of his life. Nothing personal justme. This is not about you and me. :)

Not a problem. I was just pointing out the latest research from academia about the Joseph Smith translation since that was the topic of the post.
