The Justice Department recommended an 18-month prison sentence Friday for Maria Butina, a Russian national who prosecutors claim helped the Russian government by reporting back to Moscow on key political figures in the U.S.

I would love it if someone could point out the specific statute that she violated
.For those who don't know what I am talking about in regards to Russia retaliating against US missionaries, see this.

It would be naive to assume that Russia won't reataliate against other US citizens in Russia for legitimate reasons including missionaries if she is found guilty and sentenced of this charge that is reminiscent of a charge that North Korea or Iran would charge you with if you found yourself unfortunate enough to have wandered into their borders.

This Russian Collusian proven fraud investigation is dangerous and reckless, and has been allowed to continue for long enough.

I think there might be some substance to this - and I admire President Putin for being one of the few foreign leaders willing to stand up to American imperialism. But I really think Russia's hostility to Mormon missionaries (and other sects like the JWs) has more to do with the power of the Russian Orthodox Church. Most Russians are irreligious, but the Orthodox Church still has enough political power, thanks to their good relationship with President Putin, to get their way on things like this.
