I was not impressed by Pres. Nelson requiring everyone to keep quiet and express no joy as he read out a list of new temples.
I thought that was petty.
That struck me, as well.
But then, maybe television 'real-time' broadcasting restraints - seems the meeting was running a little late - required a quick end in order to finish exactly 'on time'.

It was refreshing to have just a plain old conference. A lot of great messages, I enjoyed hearing them and the manner that they are delivered. It isn't a spectacle to entertain, the delivery allows one to really listen and meditate on the words. I do enjoy a fiery sermon as well, but I like conference just the way it is. My favorite talks are ones that are doctrinally based, I mostly care about understanding doctrine and principles better.
I don't like sports analogy talks or anything 'cute' I prefer the style of Oaks, Bednar, Maxwell, and Packer but that's just me. I do enjoy a Holland and Uchtdorf talk as well, perhaps even a Christofferson. I do my best to take what I can from everyone else. It's common for me to not like a talk at all but then after reading it later find all kinds of great things. Some talks just read better, maybe it was the speaker's delivery.
I love the fact that we have conference though, it's a great tradition.
There are certainly speakers who appear to get it.
I was impressed by Elder McKay's sermon.

You would rather he left the pride cycle unchecked, and encouraged the congregation to cheer, boo, screech hysterically or bring their air horns and giant number one fingers to wave when their favorite city is announced? It is no wonder we as a world culture have to be told to "get up off of the couch", "put down the remote", and give reverence and attention to things that are more important. We don't know when or perhaps even how to be still and know that God is. I noticed that sports seems to have been the only male common language that was spoken at church a while back. Regrettably, perhaps that is the only language some have.
I am absolutely thrilled and Love the way President Nelson has called us to repentance the past few conferences. He does it so lovingly and softly that you don't even know you are being bawled out! Instantly you have the desire to change. Really quite amazing in fact.

Personally, I was just hoping he'd call out my hometown as the recipient of a brand new temple so I could whoop and holler at the TV myself.
Alas, no whoop for me this year.

I've told you a million times to stop exaggerating.

Does anyone else record conference and then watch it later....fast forwarding anyone who isnt an Apostle or 1st Presidency?

May I suggest you don't do that this time, Brother Stock, because the best talk of the entire Conference, IMO, was given by Sister Sharon Eubanks.

From a friend with some Temple building experience- he reminded me that it's a world-wide church and it's a little off for those people who have to travel thousands of miles to a Temple and watch the Utah members hoot and holler when they get another Temple just a few miles from another one, when they already have so many Temples within a short distance from their location. Or those who might have a Temple announced close by but get no cheers or hollering- as if some Temples are better than others. All Temples should be appreciated, not just a few.

Really? I thought it was awesome and GREATLY needed. It has really gotten out of hand lately. I think the cheering is very irreverent. You wouldn't do that in sacrament meeting. Why would it be appropriate in GC? There is a way to express joy inwardly; it's call a prayer of gratitude to God for the blessing of another temple.

My prediction was that someone would say 'close quotes'. I was proven right in the first 15 min.

Because it isn't a sacrament meeting... it's a conference.
As the word suggests, at a conference we're suppposed to confer, not sit there with our fingers on our lips.
Our general conference has become a controlled performance

General conference is not a sacrament meeting. It's supposed to be a conference, ie where we confer. But no conferring takes place these days. Now we have to sit there with our fingers on our lips. In my view it has become a controlled highly choreographed performance... and the one bit of spontaneity just got snuffed out.

Nothing changed....maybe that's why there were so many calls to repent, or change?

Robin Hood's idea of a good conference, with all the hooting and hollering, conferring among each other and sustainings and all sorts of fun stuff, like an execution, I mean, an excommunication-

They do the closed quote thing even when they are quoting someone in the scriptures or quoting someone who is sitting up there right next to them. I’m not a fan of the “quote” and “closed quote” thing either.

I thought there was a very big change this time around. Less jokes. Elder Holland said to keep announcements focused on Christ. When announcing new temples, President Nelson said to not cheer. And it was obvious that he really enjoyed the cheers six months ago. He even said that an announcement regarding the Salt Lake temple would come after conference.
I readily admit that this is a very subtle change. It's such a subtle change that nobody else has mentioned it. But it feels to me like a very significant change.

I feel like Bednar's talk was much more definitive than what I've seen in the past.
