I was curious if anyone here has made an effort to do this. I started doing this about 18 months ago, and I've had amazing experiences. After reading the CNN article on how Nelson does it, it closely resembles my method....I also use a yellow notepad, though of the digital iPhone app variety.
I start with one or more specific questions. Most recently I inquired of the Lord how it is possible Joseph Smith can use divination/seer stones/occultist practices to bring to light the Book of Mormon and the Church, when the Bible specifically warns against these practices.
I fast for 1 to 3 days. At the end of the fast I pray, and meditate. The answers come to my mind all at once, over a period of several minutes to several hours, in what I truly believe is a conversation with the Lord. It can be said I am simply talking to myself....except I could never imagine such correct and intelligent answers as those that are given to me about my specific questions.
As the answers come, I write them on my iPhone notepad. I have since gone through my revelations and compiled them into what could be deemed a written list of doctrines. To my surprise, what I have revealed only strongly supports what has already been revealed....and in the instances where the mysteries that clearly mankind is not ready to receive have come, I cannot reveal them......just as the prophets of old are commanded not to reveal portions of what they've seen or been told.
Has anyone else tried this? I would be interested if you have not done so, to invite you to do so, and to ask you to report back on your experience.
Thanks

Re: Writing down revelations
Yes, I started doing this some years back and I highly recommend it. It started when I was considering what people had said about the temple being a place for receiving revelation. So one day when I went to the temple, to show the Lord I was serious about receiving revelation, I brought a pen and small notebook -- because what good is receiving revelation if I don't write it down and I forget it.
One time a temple worker lady came over to me in the Celestial room and asked to make sure I was not writing down the temple ceremony -- "nope". Of course I didn't tell her, "no, just receiving revelation from God!"
I've also done this outside of the Temple -- since a Temple building isn't the only "temple" the Lord can visit or communicate through. The messages I've received have always been related to things within my own stewardship.
I'm a big believer in approaching the Lord to know what His will is for me.

Thanks, guys, for these posts! I feel inclined, now, to do the same. I have several concerns that are within the realm of my stewardship.!

Re: Writing down revelations
I remember when I learned this lesson.
It was 12-13 years ago. I was holding my second baby trying to get him to sleep. All I wanted was to be able to put him down.
All of the sudden the Spirit told me that I was always asking for a few moments of peace, and that this was a gift from Heavenly Father, not an inconvenience.
I immediately started praying in my heart for my son, my other child, my husband, and anything else I needed.
Since that time, I learned that nighttime is an excellent time to commune with the Spirit. When I am up with a baby in the night, when I need some quiet to hear the Spirit, when I can't sleep, and most definitely when the Spirit wakes me and invites me to go to the living room and receive revelation.
I record the revelations in my journal. In fact, I only rarely write about day to day events anymore, I mostly just use it to record revelation. That often overlaps with daily life anyway.

The pages app, like everything Apple is amazing. Especially keeping a table of contents, adding foot notes, etc. It’s free on iTunes, and using it has brought my note taking to a new level.

I have written down dreams. When I write them down, they seem nonsensical. I read them later on and I am glad that I did.
