Are more people leaving the church now than before? or is it perceived that they are?
Are there any figures to substantiate this

Probably, since the stats show that overall Church growth has been slowing:

1980s - 5.11% growth
1990s - 3.95% growth
2000s - 2.54% growth
2010s - 1.94% growth

But the stats don't tell us how many are inactive. A better indicator would be stats showing activity rates from year to year.
