I've heard lots of stories like this about members in Utah. They are up to their eyeballs in debt, porn, drugs, depression, bankruptcy, and suicide at levels that top the nation or are at near the top.....and they are the bishops, stake presidents, relief society presidents, and elders quorum presidents of the church in Utah. This is not a blanket statement to crap on all the Utah members. But clearly the "message" of the gospel is not getting through to or being lived by the masses there.
So they are a lot like the rest of the decaying society we call the USA?

No. If you read what you quoted me saying...they are actually amongst the WORST in our decaying society of the USA. For years they have been at or near the top for bankruptcy, obesity, suicide, teen suicide, pornography addiction, and so forth. That doesnt make them "just like everyone else".....they are literally leading the nation in the worst possible statistics. If anything...the people in Utah are skewing the statistics down for the rest of the USA!

I know some very good people in Utah and I know some very bad people in Texas and vice versa. Mote and beam? (Thanks, Come Follow Me this week).
Tomball?

I met some pretty nice folks in TX. Wherever I went, however, no one knew what "lone star" meant. This was in the late eighties.

I was born and raised in Salt Lake City. Have children living there. Still have associates I worked with scattered about. Whenever I visit it seems I'm in a foreign country. So, so many changes and thousands more people than in the nineties when I was transferred out of state. I suppose that is due to the 2000 Olympics which could have brought in people from all over and they stayed. I still like going to the Burger Bar in Roy and the Purple Turtle in American Fork.

Anyway, I can't say everyone is vain. But somebody is:

So maybe those in Utah making all those statistics are not ... members of the church.

There are many non members here, and also former (and no longer) members,so that may be where all those statistics come from.

Also, people that complain about Utah traffic just haven't been around enough. I lived for 45 years in Los Angeles. I can tell you Utah has nothing on So Cal, tho', yes, I do know, they try hard. They don't want to be thought of as small town hicks, they want to be as egotistical rude as any bid city a**hole.

Utah sure is a lot better in many ways than So Cal.

As to the food, Utah has some good cooks, and a lot cause there are no restaurants here. You have to cook, even me.

But no matter where you are, people will come up with horrid food, particularly So Cal, as there is always someone there in the big city that ... likes it.

It's fashionable to bash Utah for nonsense reasons and none of you want to be thought of as ... unfashionable.

The whole thing about Utah being at the top in porn consumption was blown out of the water years ago, just like the myth that kids get all their IQ from their mothers. It gets repeated a lot in internetland, but it is not true.

Obesity? Utah ranks quite low actually.

Teen suicide is somewhat high, but that can be attributed to demographic factors to a large degree. White kids, particularly males, have a very high suicide rate as opposed to non-white kids, and, in fact, white males overall rank at the top. Utah is primarily white so one would expect this. it has little to do with religion and more to do with socio-cultural expectations within western society.

You might have something there in regards to economic problems. Utah Mormons are quite trusting and get scammed more easily than most people. They also are more prone to see people who are economic successes within Church leadership and believe that ones position in society is based on individual righteousness. That leaves them vulnerable.

If you are going to bash Utah Mormons then please get your facts straight.

An African-American friend who worked in Seattle with adolescent youth in detention told us, "When young men feel like failures, white kids commit suicide; black kids commit homicide."

Seems like SLC doesn't have a runaway gang problem, or does it? There was a lot of graffiti when we lived there in the late 70's, mid -80's.

What's a couple of miles? ;) I was close. Too many brain farts these days.

Has anyone gone up and over Alpine Loop? Then there is Cascade Springs. Both are fun to visit. Then there is a very fun run going up Bountiful Canyon where the Big B then up and along the top to Farmington Canyon. I guess it is all part of Skyline Drive. Oh, I can't leave out Butterfield Canyon going up and over to Tooele. There's a nice view of the mine pit from atop a plateau at the summit. One can also go from Brighton to Heber, or at least I used to be able to. Who knows these days?

Vain people aren't allowed to go to these places because it ruins the beauty of it all.

It was played over and over in the sixties when us guys used to drag State Street. In those days there was a popular radio station by the call letters KNAK. In the mono version of the song one can hear one of the guys say KNAK in the background.

When you're living in a FEMA camp with armed government puppets watching your every move you'll wish you were back in a better time. I'm just ahead of the game. I've always liked forties, fifties, sixties and seventies music and always will. I'm one of the millions that do, that's why there are radio stations all over the country still playing it. I said music, music with real instruments and real singing voices. But, then again, I liked Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Vic Damone, Neil Diamond, Barry Manilow, Dean Marin, McGuire Sisters, The Andrews Sisters, George Hamilton IV, Jerry Vale, Johnnie Ray, Bobby Bare, Tom T Hall, Johnny Cash, Roy Clark, The Grand Canyon Suite...should I go on? All of which are in the past.

Maybe you don't like music from yesteryear and that's okay, too.

Oh, BTW, I didn't listen to KNAK much. My favorite station was KCPX for Rock, and KSOP for Country.

I agree the Obesity thing looks to have improved a great deal since around 2007 when I last checked this out....however I think you are misguided on the pornography and adultery problem. Utah Ashley Madison accounts made the state among the highest of paying clients in the nation.

https://www.standard.net/news/utah-amon ... 982bf.html

I think its pretty unlikely to get started on internet adultery without starting at internet pornography.....

When I lived in SL, and upon someone giving me a bad time I told them if they didn't like being there...to move out. And when they got after the Mormon's for being out of touch with society, or some other crap, I told them that we were there before they were ever born, and we had to make a life, a home and town out of a desert. And to see if they would be as successful. It usually shut them up. When people are rude just point to the way out of town and tell them you hope they find a better place to live. Most of the people living there are transplants anyway.

Try Hiawatha or Tooele area. Maybe even down around Salem, or even Price or Delta. Cedar City or St George, Washington or Ivans. Salt Lake has gotten too big. There's lots of smaller places that can be checked out for residency. Try Willard or Brigham City, or Logan, Smithfield or somewhere in between. Heber or Soapstone. Then there are small towns along the highway going to Vernal.
What keeps us glued down is employment. But if one doesn't mind being a grocer, or a parts counter salesperson, a gas pump operator or a pea picker, getting away from the big ant hill may be most healthy, and nerve settling. It's all in what our priorities are. Everywhere we go there are local problems to be dealt with, no place is free and easy. But the air might be more breathable. There will be a local LDS church and many new friends to be made.

I may or may not have helped, but give it a thought and see if something fits into your dreams that you can grasp.

My parents used to take us to Utah nearly every year for family reunions. I thought it was a great place. Then I lived there for a few years. Never have I been so excited to leave a state.... That being said, I mostly lived in the MorCore area (Provo through SLC). I'm sure the 'burbs are much better.

To this day, the wife and I won't set foot in Utah - not even for Conference. My long-term exposure to "cultural Mormons" has not been a pleasant one. "Dog eat dog" is not exactly the "one heart and one mind" experience I was hoping for.

Mormonism as practiced, is a prosperity gospel with a heavy dose of confirmation bias. Wealth and health are symbols of righteousness. "Obedience brings blessings," "pay your tithing on what you want to make". With few exceptions, church leaders, SP and up are disproportionately wealthy vs the average ward member. This is seen as evidence of the Lord being pleased with them. Look at the Q15. With few exceptions, they enjoy remarkable health given their age, and have considerable wealth. Even BKP who was a CES employee was reported to have millions in assets.

In Utah it's important that you buy into this idea. The ostentatious houses, boob jobs, facelifts and MLMs!

When people are rude just point to the way out of town and tell them you hope they find a better place to live.

Yeah! I remember those bumper stickers, "Happiness is seeing Salt Lake City in your rearview mirror."
I suffer through going back though. It's nice to visit for a few days and see grandkids. I know, I was one until all my grandparents died in the seventies. Then my own parents in 2002. Now all I can do is visit grave sites. Bummer.
But when I leave, I can't see Salt Lake in a rear view mirror from =/- 30000 ft. flying North.
Is it true that in some parts of the valley, birds fly upside down?
